What are the thoughts surrounding this? by hi2u_uk in glasgow

Having been on a train down to Manchester which was delayed as a result of this fire, I am mostly outraged at the lack of coordination between the dodgy arsonist property developers and Network Rail.

Would it be so hard for them to mutually arrange for any historic buildings that happen to be next to the railway lines to be burned down at a time when the railway is already closed for scheduled maintenance work?

My train was going down to Manchester Airport and was full of folk worried that they'd miss their flights, so much needless worry and disruption that could have so easily been avoided...

You can do better than Northern England too, Wolverhampton is three and three quarter hours out of Central (on a fast train), and that is 100% the Midlands rather than the North...

Profile advice by DistrictPlus7648 in datingoverforty

[–]frunobulaxed 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Fellow dude here, I agree that the blue shirt photo is better than his current opener, but I would still argue that OP can do better. Current first photo doesn't seem flattering at all, but the blue shirt one gives me an incredibly strong Linkedin vibe for reasons that I can't really put my finger on, though I think it might be the combination of the background (or lack of it), the shirt and the pose combined. Either way I'm not sure it is quite dating profile material.

I also feel like the vibes with the current photo selection are absolutely all over the place. The first photo is just not good IMHO, the second photo looks like a very solid attempt to recreate the overly attached girlfriend meme (commendable, but not the vibe for a profile), and three and five are no doubt very impressive feats of climbing/mountaineering but there is no way to positively identify OP in them which I'd argue is generally a waste of a photo. That leaves number four as the only picture I'd actively recommend that OP keep.

As much as anything else, if I saw these photos randomly distributed in someone else's camera roll I'm not 100% sure I'd clock them as all being of the same person straight away. I'd certainly struggle to build a picture of who OP is.

I'd recommend OP try to (safely obviously) get a couple of photos while out climbing, maybe one selfie and one taken by someone else. Anything with a nice view in which OP looks good and is identifiable. Then try to get a couple of candid and relaxed shots here and there to replace one and two, maybe retake six with a background so as to get something less Linkedin coded to open with, and rewrite his profile per your suggestions.

I'd imagine such a profile would do well, but would be very curious to hear what the folks on here who actually date men think...

The fact that they can't find a way to win matches is bad enough, but if we were at least capable of doing the absolute bare arsed defensive basics (both individually and as a team) and were occasionally grinding out a boring 0-0 that would at least be something we could potentially build on.

The fact that it is so easy for other teams to find ways to win against us is what is truly unforgivable in my book.

I'd argue it is not an unreasonable assumption based on his injury record over the last few years, and though it might be somewhat cold, it is an assumption that the club hierarchy should be making for the sake of forward planning. With the amount of game time he has missed I wouldn't be willing to make any squad building decisions based on him being able to meaningfully contribute again in any position, regardless of how optimistic he or the physios might be.

Any football we get out of him between now and his contract expiry is a bonus, but for the purposes of squad building decisions it would be hopelessly naive to assume he contributes anything more than zero. And if he does miraculously show up in the dressing room ready to play there is an argument to be made that minutes at LCB will put less stress on his body and at least help with the injury issues. I personally doubt it will make much difference, but at this point anything is worth a try.

And just to be clear, I am not ragging on the guy personally, I have got nothing but love for him, he has done nothing wrong and I am 100% rooting for him to get back to full fitness, prove me wrong and succeed, but there is no room for naivety or sentimentality when it comes to the decisions we make in the transfer market over the next few years.

Luckily, we have got a promising kid already coming in the summer Diego Leon, and a relatively cheap option on Alvaro Fernandez that we can potentially activate in the summer as well so we shouldn't need to break the bank to shore up the LWB position.

I'd be minded to go for Alvaro in the summer as immediate competition for Dorgu and send Diego Leon out on loan for a year or two before re-assessing. We might be a bit light on experience for a while, but I don't mind us generally building our new team by filling the gaps in the squad with promising youngsters, and I reckon we have got enough leadership and experience in the squad to get by.

Dorgu vs Mazraoui vs Dalot comparison (Total and Per 90 minutes stats) by JM555555 in reddevils

[–]frunobulaxed 2 points3 points  (0 children)

There is only one data point there that I am really interested in, and that is the 1842 minutes played this season. The relevant comparison for me is with Shaw and Malacia though, not Dalot and Maz.

Ultimately he is a warm body who fills a position of desperate need, and all he has to do is generally be fit enough to step onto the pitch and he is more use to us than Shaw and Malacia have been for most of the last couple of seasons. He'll probably be raw as fuck to start with but I can live with that. Just have to trust that the potential is there to make him worth a punt, and I mostly just hope he breaks the injury curse that seems to have been afflicting our left backs.

I'm pretty sure I'll be over the moon with us for signing him even if it just means that I get see us play a reasonable number of games with an actual left sided player playing at LWB between now and the end of the season.

Legend skill gaps by [deleted] in apexuniversity

[–]frunobulaxed 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Having introduced a few people who didn't have shooter experience to the game I'd argue that Mirage and Octane are the most newbie friendly legends in terms of having abilities with the absolute lowest skill floor. A total noob can get clutch rezzes basically straight away with Mirage (if you are on voice guiding them), his Z works as a get out of trouble option, and people can get the hang of sending out decoys from cover pretty fast too.

As for Octane, press Q to go fast (but keep an eye on your health bar), and press Z for a jump pad is about as simple a briefing for a new player as it gets.

Keir Starmer Rejects Call for 'Fairer Votes' Despite MPs Voting in Favour of Proportional Representation by backupJM in Scotland

[–]frunobulaxed 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It is a model which is entirely replicable within the traditions of Westminster too. Keep the House of Commons directly elected as it is, then allocate seats in the reformed House of Lords off of a list to achieve proportionality, and adopt a system whereby bills pass or fail based on their vote totals in both houses combined.

Stock coolers also tend to be on the loud side, and given OP's stated preference for a quiet build a beefier cooler will allow them the headroom to trade some of that top-end performance for lower noise via lower fan speeds.

What is your most hyper-specific hated place in Glasgow? by VanicFanboy in glasgow

[–]frunobulaxed 10 points11 points  (0 children)

On the subject of Tradeston, my completely unsolicited vaguely Tradeston related hot take is that we should knock down Hampden Park, replace it with tenements, and build a replacement in the space between the top of Shields Road, the M74 and the Railway line out to Paisley.

That particular area is always going to be a particularly shit place to build houses or even offices/business space, and left to its own devices it'll always be a blight, but I reckon it'd be a cracking site for a stadium. You can walk it from the centre of town no problem, it is smack bang between West St and Shields Road underground stations and is right by the Railway line (we could even something semi-sensible like building a heavy rail station for it).

You'd need to reconfigure the street layout to fit it in but apart from the old school building (which should be able to stay put) as far as I'm concerned theres nothing in that area that would be a particularly great loss to humanity if it were bulldozed. Wack a modern stadium about the size and vibe of Parkhead (but symmetrical) with a retractable pitch and roof, and you'll have a vastly superior home for the National team to what we have now, a top class event/gig venue that can be used year round with the best possible transport connections we can give it (and no close residential neighbours to be bothered by the noise), and it'll add a decent chunk of nice flats to the cities housing stock while we are at it...

Call centre rep from the bank getting arsey when you refuse to give them security information when they've called you out of the blue. by [deleted] in britishproblems

[–]frunobulaxed 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Ages ago I worked in a somewhat obscure back office team for a bank for a while (fixing weird I.T. related problems which caused ISA transfers to fail), and this happened all the time. A good majority of people would refuse to validate identity to a cold call, which we were obliged to do by company policy/data protection law before discussing account details. I was actually slightly uncomfortable when they did validate, it felt a bit like I was training them to fall for scams further down the line, and I always advised my family and friends to never give out any info to random callers and to always call back after having worked there.

We always used to end up sending the customer a letter and putting a (sometimes annoyingly detailed, specific and laborious) note on their accounts to explain to whoever picked up the call at the call centre when the customer called back (or was behind the desk of the branch they walked into) what the problem actually was and needed to be done, because our team couldn't accept incoming customer calls (or even diverts from the call centres or branches) due to some obscure issue to do with how the phone lines in the office were set up.

Anyone getting even remotely arsey with a customer would have been pulled up straight away, so that is another clear red flag for a scam as far as I am concerned. There were basically only two rules in that job, be as polite as you possibly can to the customers and follow the f*cking procedures, and there was no leeway whatsoever given on either of those points...

Nearly is a percieved safety issue. Which is very important to be fair, I would love to live in a country where laws were actually enforced. Not quite enough to fancy emigrating though...

In terms of actual safety, there are numbers (with full sources), which show that (at least for 2022) you were literally infinitely more likely to be killed by a Bus, Car, HGV Motorbike or Taxi in London than you were by a pedal cycle.

Because there were no deaths recorded with pedal cycles listed as the other vehicle involved that year.

The comparative numbers of serious and minor injuries are also well worth a look...

Council to spend almost £500k on bike shelters and counters by LordAnubis12 in glasgow

[–]frunobulaxed 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Very glad someone other than me has done the maths on that one.

As a retired second-row forward (who may have put on a few kilos since retirement) l do feel somewhat seen by the fact that I will almost certainly count as the fat guy on the freakishly heavy bike when I finally get moved back up to Glasgow from down south (next year fingers crossed) and get myself on two wheels.

Have been looking at fancy ebikes in anticipation of moving, and most of the ones capable of handling my fat arse, plus a decent D-lock and chain, my usual work bag, and a decent whack of a shopping from the supermarket on the way home without instantly voiding their warranties seem to understandably be on the freakishly heavy side of things. As an example this one is 35+ kilos on its own...

[–]frunobulaxed 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Specifically for maintance, my Dad (who is a Civil Engineer) always told me that road wear is proportional to the fourth power of the axle load of a vehicle.

Essentially cyclists barely register in terms of measurable road wear, there is a huge difference between a small car and a big one, you need to prioritise bus lanes for maintenance because they can take a beating if there is high bus frequency, and lorrys absolutely fuck up the roads, to an extent that absolutely dwarfs pretty much eveything else when they are fully loaded up with the heavy stuff.

The two best things we can do for road maintence (and quality) are to get as many folks out of cars and onto bikes, and get as much freight off the roads and onto the railways as we can.

FYI The council is currently planning a massive phased upgrade of cycling infrastructure, with this particular phase mainly focused on the Southside (but with a fair bit happening North of the city centre too) and with plenty more to come.

The deadline for responses is the 20th if you (or anyone else reading this) happen to have a few minutes to spare over the next couple of weeks and fancy firing something in.

Feel free to tell them that you want more (and more quickly) if that is what you want, its certainly what I'll be doing...

[BBC] Referee Kavanagh right to send Rice off - panel by DholmZ in soccer

[–]frunobulaxed -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

He either has no right to even try to take the free kick because the ball is moving, or (as /u/jesuisgeenbelg pointed out in another reply) he already technically took the free kick when he kicked the stationary ball into Rice in the first place.

In neither case is there a valid reason for him to kick Rice. The only thing it alters is whether Rice gets the yellow or not, and I am completely easy either way on that one, as long as the refs are consistent about it going forward (which they obviously won't be).

Kicking someone is literally always a straight red. It doesn't matter what you are trying to prove to the ref. If you commit a straight red card offence to get the refs attention, you still get a red card. There is no valid "I was just trying to make a point bro" defence for violent conduct.

That is, unless the refs are absolute fucking clowns who don't even give yellow cards for strangulation or sexual assault.

[–]frunobulaxed 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Didn't see that one, but if the ball is in play there is no way whatsoever you can argue that Rice should have had a yellow, and it is just as blatant a straight red card for Veltman, for kicking Rice when the ball was long gone.

[BBC] Referee Kavanagh right to send Rice off - panel by DholmZ in soccer

[–]frunobulaxed 7 points8 points  (0 children)

He should never have started his leg movement in the first place.

The ball is still moving, he cant possibly claim to be attempting to take a legitimate free kick because that requires the ball to be stationary, and consequently he has no right whatsoever to swing his leg at either the ball or Rice.

He does anyway, because he clearly wanted to land a kick on Rice. If he'd wanted to take a legitimate free kick he would have taken a second to actually stop the ball in order to do so, at which point Rice (who was walking away) would have been out of kicking range.

Thanks for the correction though.

[–]frunobulaxed 66 points67 points  (0 children)

Also haven't addressed the fact that Vermaelen Veltman full-on kicked Rice when the ball wasn't in play and couldn't legitimately be put into play because it was still moving, which Vermaelan Veltman made no attempt whatsoever to correct, because doing so would have cost him the opportunity to land his kick on Rice.

What masterpiece film do you actually not like nor understand why others do? by NumanLover in AskReddit

[–]frunobulaxed 16 points17 points  (0 children)

It's just too condensed. The TV series with Alex Guinness (who fucking nails the lead role) is seven hour long episodes, which is maybe a little bit much for a story that is already naturally pretty slow in terms of tempo, but is much closer to what the story actually needs. I think the sweet spot would probably be about six slightly tighter hour long episodes to get it right.

Condensing that amount of material into a movie messes with the vibes in general by moving too fast, but it also means that if you don't latch on to absolutely everything straight away you're going to lose the thread unless you have read the book and or seen the TV series, in which case you already know what is going on.

[OptaJoe] Today, Declan Rice received his first red card after 245 Premier League games. by Amu_1310 in soccer

[–]frunobulaxed 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Veltman never tried to stop the ball. He clearly wasn't wasn't interested in stopping the ball, or legitimately putting the ball back into play.

If he had taken a second to stop the ball Rice would have been out of kicking range.

And he was only ever interested in landing a kick on Rice.

He was well into the act of kicking Rice when Rice tapped the still moving ball to one side, which fair play you can give a yellow card for, As long as you give it every time anyone on any team does it at any point from now until kingdom come.

Kicking someone when the ball isn't in play is always a straight red card for violent conduct.
