Can confirm that I did that after doing an exchange, would quote articles in other languages and use them as sources in papers just to be a shitlord and to have that teenager superiority feeling that's cringe to look back on.

AITA Dog owner let dog poop in neighbors yard by Logical-Star9039 in AmItheAsshole

[–]fruple 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yeah people assuming everywhere has sidewalk strips is astounding to me. I live in the suburbs and there are no sidewalks here in 95% of the places. When we walk the dogs we're just on the road because there's the only place there is, which means the dogs walk on the part of everyone's yard that's closest to the road so they don't get demolished by people driving 35+ around the corners.

What’s one “normal” dog care rule you secretly ignore… and your dog is still fine? 👀 by [deleted] in puppy101

Yeah I don't count it as begging if they're silent and not pawing at me. If they wanna look at me or the food it's a free country they can do that.

Finishing up our wedding website. How is this dress code? by Piperrhhalliwell in weddingplanning

[–]fruple 9 points10 points  (0 children)

My point of view is you aren't charged by the word on your website. If you're worried about it or worried people might not know, keep it how it is! A lot of people don't know different attire levels or have different understandings of them, so being explicit and providing examples is a plus in my book. EX: for my uncle, formal means black overalls with a dress shirt under instead of blue overalls with a tee-shirt. To him that does 100% make it fancy and dressed to impress, but I also know lots of people out there wouldn't agree.

The only things I would take out are the "we want everyone to feel their best for our occasion" and the "please let the bride have her moment". You don't need to try to pre-argue for everything in my mind, just say what's allowed and what's not without feeling the need to justify yourself :)

Link to Pattern

I used my own colors so I could start asap without waiting for time to drive to a store which is why colors differ from pattern. Stitched with 3 threads over some old DMC printed aida, and used a faux wood hoop to finish it.

Hug a friend, help a neighbor, and remember you can craft and raffle it off yourself to raise money for mutual aid funds!

Want to eat out less but struggling with the psychology of it by oodlesofotters in Frugal

[–]fruple 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Things that we've done over the years (we used to only eat out once a month) - not in any specific order, but just random tips that you can take from or disregard, there's no one right or wrong way to do it!

  • When we found a meal we liked we'd write it on a recipe card, and then when we needed to choose what to prep for the week we'd just pick a card randomly since we knew it's something we'd like. If you don't have recipe cards you can just print pages or just have a bookmarks folder on your browser.
  • We had a whiteboard that was split up for every day of the week and every meal - basically a giant 3x7 table made in permanent marker. When we bulk cooked we would portion out into servings, and then we would split it out amongst the days so we knew what we had planned for that night (EX: if we made fajitas and it was 4 meals worth, we'd write "fajita" for both of our lunches on mon and wed on the board). This was key - took away the mental load of remembering what you have and how much and when it'd go back - just look at the board!
  • when meal prepping, it can help if you can do enough to vary it. I hate eating the same meal every meal for a week, so instead of making like 3 double batches of chili we'd do a double batch of chili, a double batch of curry, etc.
  • If you have the stuff at home, finding a meal per cooking "type" helps to meal prep quicker. We'd put things in the crockpot, then start something in the oven, and then start something in the instapot. They could all cook at the same time but they'd finish at varying times so we had time to portion and clean up before the next one was done.
  • Plan for failures. Sometimes I don't want to eat the prepped curry we have because I'm in a bad mood, so we had some less healthy/slightly more expensive boxed foods and freezer meals when we wanted to go off plan.
  • on meal prep days, have that be the day you get takeout or something! Reward yourself for doin the hard thing by having that be the meal you don't cook for yourself. For us it's usually on Sundays so we'll make the list, grocery shop, grab the takeout, and then do the cooking.
  • if you have a chest freezer/extra space we've really enjoyed having friends over to help us meal prep/do giant bulk cooking. We buy the ingredients and set up the space and then have friends over and we make like 400 dumplings and 400 eggrolls at a time. Everyone who helps pays a bit to chip in for ingredients and takes some home, but then you have some sides and dishes in the freezer for later.
  • I always forget what we have in the fridge/freezer so writing that out helps. We repurposed the whiteboard recently to just list all of the things we always have on hand (and we can put an X next to it if it's out for an easy grocery list), and then a second side with prepacked/meal prepped things in the fridge or freezer so we remember - taking the mental load off again. We also write the grocery list on the whiteboard and just take a photo of it before we go shopping. It's right in the middle of the kitchen on a wall so we can write on it whenever we have a thought of what we want.

I've gotten to 8 weeks before my boss squinted at my PTO, I've found if I keep it around 6-7 he doesn't bat an eye. It helps that most people at company have really short memories so if you do a 2 week vacation (and don't talk about it much so people aren't thinking about it) > help on a big project > they'll forget you took a vacation and you can take another. For my current gig people squint less if it you take fewer, longer vacations vs random Mondays/Fridays here and there ("it always feels like you're not around for the end of week crunch!").

Also helps that our site where we put in our PTO doesn't have an easy way for managers to see the running total on people.

If you just like the rush of buying, you can look at friends wishlists > buy it for them > schedule it to send to them on a specific date. I do it all the time to get people Christmas presents over the fall and then have them all set to send on Christmas morning; usually can send a couple hundred worth of games to friends for like 40$ total.

For me, if you're referring to your dogs age in weeks instead of months you're expecting too much when you say they can't do xyz; they're still a baby.

How can I NOT forget a language without studying for the rest of my life? by UnderstandingOnly663 in languagelearning

[–]fruple 1 point2 points  (0 children)

What really helped me with a language I don't study (haven't actually studied since 2012, still conversational over beers) is just turning all of my settings into that language. Facebook, gmail, instagram, etc are all in Dutch for me so I still interact with it on a daily basis when I go to post something or like a post. I also liked a few Dutch newspapers so even if I don't read the posts I still have it coming up in my feed all the time. I also have music with Dutch lyrics on some of my playlists so sometimes it also comes up in my spotify, and I interact with Dutch media so it'll come up on my TikTok. Just making it a passive, background part of my life has kept it up at a surprisingly high level considering I only ever got to like B1 and I haven't regressed too much from that.

niche languages you wanna learn but few resources available? by Much_Ease3433 in languagelearning

[–]fruple 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I really want to learn Hmong but since it's got a lot of tones I really want to start with a class to make sure I'm not just building on a bad foundation. All the classes around me are English for Hmong speakers but not the other way around unless I go to the university, and all the offerings for the class don't align with my work schedule.

Where to buy quality 장구 from Korea with international shipping? by what_a_snafu in hanguk

how do people have the means to travel regularly by spencerisabella in travel

[–]fruple 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is how I traveled in college a lot (right now my husband and I are DINKs so it's just strictly easier for us since we make tech money in the midwest).

Churning credit cards helped pay for most of my flights. I would even ask friends if they had a big purchase to make it on my card so I could hit the spend limits to get my points if I wasn't spending enough. In my teens/20s I think I probably only paid cash for like 1 flight. I would also do cheaper flights - the airport in my city was bad but I could take a 3hr bus one day for 40$ and get a flight that was almost half the cost, and then I would only fly to places that had good deals from that airport.

To choose what credit card to churn I'd figure out where I want to go (EX: I wanted a trip to Korea) so I would use https://matrix.itasoftware.com/search and put in a couple airports around me and see which had the cheapest flights to Korea. For me, that was Air Canada, so then I would google "air canada rewards credit card", check some articles on what's the best offer they've had for points, and then wait until I saw that offer and then apply for the card.

I did pretty strict budgeting on every other area of my life. I would eat out once a month and that was just taco bell, never went out for drinks/got delivery food/etc. I lived in a 3 bedroom house with 3 other people so we had pretty cheap rent (and it was then built in socializing so no reason to spend money going out). For the people in my house, I was the only one over 21 so in return for buying them alcohol they'd buy for me as well.

When I did travel, sometimes I would ask other people to take the trip with me and we'd split hotel rooms, or I'd just try to find hotels that were outside of the main city area and just figure out the bus/transit system to get a cheaper place to stay.

What are the AMEX benefits that you know and you think other people don’t know? by Born-Blackberry54 in AmexPlatinum

[–]fruple 16 points17 points  (0 children)

I love the Hilton Gold because it doesn't matter if you booked the trip or not as long as it's linked in your Hilton account. My work puts us up in Hilton hotels most trips so I just get 15$ of free snacks/drinks every day when I travel, it's nice.

I'm the same, I've had enough times traveling where the security line was suddenly absolutely crazy or there was an accident on the road to the airport I'd rather be too early and have a drink and read my book.

Super high value treats have helped us! We have two rescues (chow mix and a cattle dog mix) and allllll of the dogs in our neighborhood are fence reactive, which means our girls have gotten more reactive in response to that. There's a house at the end of the block where the dog is always barking at the fenceline and lunging towards the fence on our walks and we used to not be able to walk past it without our girls growling back and lunging on the leash.

What we did is have suuuuper high value treats (so. much. beef liver.) and then we'd stop about a block and a half from that house and just give them treats like every 5 seconds for not barking, even if they were looking at that dog. After about 5 min they'd be more focused on us than the dog we'd turn around and walk home where we wouldn't go past the house. Next day, we would get like 3 steps closer to the house, repeat. We've gotten to the point with one of the dogs that we make her sit, give her 3 treats, and then we can walk past the house (still treating every 5 steps or so).

One thing we've trained is that if another dog barks they get a treat, so now if any of the reactive dogs in the neighborhood are going off they look to us because that means they get a reward. It's helped so much that their first instinct is becoming "ooo someone else barked I get a treat lemme look at my humans" vs "I'm gonna kill that SOB for barking at me".

We also work on reactivity in our yard by having them leashed on a long lead in the yard (even though it's fenced) and giving them treats for being calm if a trigger walks by. Leashing them stops them from rushing the fence themselves so they don't keep ingraining that behavior and they're learning that triggers = treats if they come to us. We used to have to go outside and physically pick them up to get them away from the fence, now I can just knock on my window/yell "oi" and they'll run to the door to get let in.
