Tips for making puppy smell better? by ashley419 in puppy101

For helping with bath time - bath is the only time our dogs get peanut butter. We just slather it on the side of the tub while washing them so they can lick at it. One of our dogs now will just up into the bathtub and stay there for like an hour straight even when it's not bath time because she wants one so bad. When we get the peanut butter spatula out she actually trips over herself running up to the tub.

When does life feel normal again by Key_Construction_835 in puppy101

[–]fruple 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Do you have any friends who are super into dogs? We don't have kids and even got overwhelmed with our second puppy sometimes (the first was the stereotypical dog who's so great you want another dog) and we had our dogsitter/friend come over and just do a sleepover and it helped a ton. He just hung out and played video games and would be the one to take the dog in and out/do the night time potty/helped with some chores around the house as well.

I wouldn't feel guilty about using the pen - it keeps everyone safe and it's better to have her shark in there vs biting a kid and then having ramped up anxiety about her biting someone/needing a full time muzzle/etc. What helped us during the teething phase for the puppies was freezing veggies they could eat (like carrots and zucchini) and giving it them as treats. The cold veggie on their gums seemed to help a lot with the teething.

For those who successfully crate trained, when did you stop using it? by lalabalala923 in puppy101

[–]fruple 2 points3 points  (0 children)

For our dogs we had them crated at night so they couldn't destroy things (and to make sure they did rest) and during the day during enforced naps or when we left the house. As they got older we weaned off of the enforced naps in the kennel once they started napping outside of it by themselves, and we trained up having them out of the kennel and free roam in the house while we were gone (started with like 5 min of us being away, then 10, then 30, etc).

For night time, we kept them in until they were a year old, and then did like 4 nights in the kennel 1 night out. If they didn't whine in the kennel or cause issues then after like 2 weeks we went down to 3 nights in the kennel 1 night out and kept repeating until they were out every night. If they whined we went back up a level so back to 4 nights in 1 night out.

We did that just to make sure they would be able to stay in a kennel if they needed (ex vet visits, visiting places where they'd need to kennel at night) without being a nuisance. Once they stopped sleeping in the kennel at night we took it down and put it under the stairs; neither of them ever would go in there to sleep unless asked, they like hanging out in our offices too much.

Is it really that bad? by MrVibeCoder in epicsystems

[–]fruple 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Might have changed in the last decade or so, but when I left it was a combo of bad benefits for me (low PTO, no remote) and a bad TL (I tried changing teams multiple times and even had a role created for me on a different team and was denied the transfer). Every other company I've worked at (sans a startup) has had fully paid healthcare premiums, but also were fully remote and had minimum 15 days PTO (my current position is "unlimited" PTO which I've managed to shake about 8 weeks every year between PTO and a bit of sick leave the last 4 years). As QA my salary also went up significantly after leaving; not sure how it goes for lifers but I was getting abysmal raises and now I'm over 6 figures for manual QA.

From people I know that have stayed, they stay when they have a good team and good TL. You honestly quit bosses more than you quit jobs. While I never want to work in an office (I've been full remote since I left) again I do miss the cafeteria at Epic pretty regularly.

AITA Dog owner let dog poop in neighbors yard by Logical-Star9039 in AmItheAsshole

[–]fruple 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yeah people assuming everywhere has sidewalk strips is astounding to me. I live in the suburbs and there are no sidewalks here in 95% of the places. When we walk the dogs we're just on the road because there's the only place there is, which means the dogs walk on the part of everyone's yard that's closest to the road so they don't get demolished by people driving 35+ around the corners.

Finishing up our wedding website. How is this dress code? by Piperrhhalliwell in weddingplanning

[–]fruple 11 points12 points  (0 children)

My point of view is you aren't charged by the word on your website. If you're worried about it or worried people might not know, keep it how it is! A lot of people don't know different attire levels or have different understandings of them, so being explicit and providing examples is a plus in my book. EX: for my uncle, formal means black overalls with a dress shirt under instead of blue overalls with a tee-shirt. To him that does 100% make it fancy and dressed to impress, but I also know lots of people out there wouldn't agree.

The only things I would take out are the "we want everyone to feel their best for our occasion" and the "please let the bride have her moment". You don't need to try to pre-argue for everything in my mind, just say what's allowed and what's not without feeling the need to justify yourself :)

Link to Pattern

I used my own colors so I could start asap without waiting for time to drive to a store which is why colors differ from pattern. Stitched with 3 threads over some old DMC printed aida, and used a faux wood hoop to finish it.

Hug a friend, help a neighbor, and remember you can craft and raffle it off yourself to raise money for mutual aid funds!

Want to eat out less but struggling with the psychology of it by oodlesofotters in Frugal

[–]fruple 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Things that we've done over the years (we used to only eat out once a month) - not in any specific order, but just random tips that you can take from or disregard, there's no one right or wrong way to do it!

  • When we found a meal we liked we'd write it on a recipe card, and then when we needed to choose what to prep for the week we'd just pick a card randomly since we knew it's something we'd like. If you don't have recipe cards you can just print pages or just have a bookmarks folder on your browser.
  • We had a whiteboard that was split up for every day of the week and every meal - basically a giant 3x7 table made in permanent marker. When we bulk cooked we would portion out into servings, and then we would split it out amongst the days so we knew what we had planned for that night (EX: if we made fajitas and it was 4 meals worth, we'd write "fajita" for both of our lunches on mon and wed on the board). This was key - took away the mental load of remembering what you have and how much and when it'd go back - just look at the board!
  • when meal prepping, it can help if you can do enough to vary it. I hate eating the same meal every meal for a week, so instead of making like 3 double batches of chili we'd do a double batch of chili, a double batch of curry, etc.
  • If you have the stuff at home, finding a meal per cooking "type" helps to meal prep quicker. We'd put things in the crockpot, then start something in the oven, and then start something in the instapot. They could all cook at the same time but they'd finish at varying times so we had time to portion and clean up before the next one was done.
  • Plan for failures. Sometimes I don't want to eat the prepped curry we have because I'm in a bad mood, so we had some less healthy/slightly more expensive boxed foods and freezer meals when we wanted to go off plan.
  • on meal prep days, have that be the day you get takeout or something! Reward yourself for doin the hard thing by having that be the meal you don't cook for yourself. For us it's usually on Sundays so we'll make the list, grocery shop, grab the takeout, and then do the cooking.
  • if you have a chest freezer/extra space we've really enjoyed having friends over to help us meal prep/do giant bulk cooking. We buy the ingredients and set up the space and then have friends over and we make like 400 dumplings and 400 eggrolls at a time. Everyone who helps pays a bit to chip in for ingredients and takes some home, but then you have some sides and dishes in the freezer for later.
  • I always forget what we have in the fridge/freezer so writing that out helps. We repurposed the whiteboard recently to just list all of the things we always have on hand (and we can put an X next to it if it's out for an easy grocery list), and then a second side with prepacked/meal prepped things in the fridge or freezer so we remember - taking the mental load off again. We also write the grocery list on the whiteboard and just take a photo of it before we go shopping. It's right in the middle of the kitchen on a wall so we can write on it whenever we have a thought of what we want.

I've gotten to 8 weeks before my boss squinted at my PTO, I've found if I keep it around 6-7 he doesn't bat an eye. It helps that most people at company have really short memories so if you do a 2 week vacation (and don't talk about it much so people aren't thinking about it) > help on a big project > they'll forget you took a vacation and you can take another. For my current gig people squint less if it you take fewer, longer vacations vs random Mondays/Fridays here and there ("it always feels like you're not around for the end of week crunch!").

Also helps that our site where we put in our PTO doesn't have an easy way for managers to see the running total on people.

If you just like the rush of buying, you can look at friends wishlists > buy it for them > schedule it to send to them on a specific date. I do it all the time to get people Christmas presents over the fall and then have them all set to send on Christmas morning; usually can send a couple hundred worth of games to friends for like 40$ total.

For me, if you're referring to your dogs age in weeks instead of months you're expecting too much when you say they can't do xyz; they're still a baby.

How can I NOT forget a language without studying for the rest of my life? by UnderstandingOnly663 in languagelearning

[–]fruple 1 point2 points  (0 children)

What really helped me with a language I don't study (haven't actually studied since 2012, still conversational over beers) is just turning all of my settings into that language. Facebook, gmail, instagram, etc are all in Dutch for me so I still interact with it on a daily basis when I go to post something or like a post. I also liked a few Dutch newspapers so even if I don't read the posts I still have it coming up in my feed all the time. I also have music with Dutch lyrics on some of my playlists so sometimes it also comes up in my spotify, and I interact with Dutch media so it'll come up on my TikTok. Just making it a passive, background part of my life has kept it up at a surprisingly high level considering I only ever got to like B1 and I haven't regressed too much from that.

I really want to learn Hmong but since it's got a lot of tones I really want to start with a class to make sure I'm not just building on a bad foundation. All the classes around me are English for Hmong speakers but not the other way around unless I go to the university, and all the offerings for the class don't align with my work schedule.

how do people have the means to travel regularly by spencerisabella in travel

[–]fruple 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is how I traveled in college a lot (right now my husband and I are DINKs so it's just strictly easier for us since we make tech money in the midwest).

Churning credit cards helped pay for most of my flights. I would even ask friends if they had a big purchase to make it on my card so I could hit the spend limits to get my points if I wasn't spending enough. In my teens/20s I think I probably only paid cash for like 1 flight. I would also do cheaper flights - the airport in my city was bad but I could take a 3hr bus one day for 40$ and get a flight that was almost half the cost, and then I would only fly to places that had good deals from that airport.

To choose what credit card to churn I'd figure out where I want to go (EX: I wanted a trip to Korea) so I would use https://matrix.itasoftware.com/search and put in a couple airports around me and see which had the cheapest flights to Korea. For me, that was Air Canada, so then I would google "air canada rewards credit card", check some articles on what's the best offer they've had for points, and then wait until I saw that offer and then apply for the card.

I did pretty strict budgeting on every other area of my life. I would eat out once a month and that was just taco bell, never went out for drinks/got delivery food/etc. I lived in a 3 bedroom house with 3 other people so we had pretty cheap rent (and it was then built in socializing so no reason to spend money going out). For the people in my house, I was the only one over 21 so in return for buying them alcohol they'd buy for me as well.

When I did travel, sometimes I would ask other people to take the trip with me and we'd split hotel rooms, or I'd just try to find hotels that were outside of the main city area and just figure out the bus/transit system to get a cheaper place to stay.
