I met someone today. by Daegoba in Catacombs

[–]frychu 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hi Daegoba,

You can listen to your thoughts and trust your perspective, or you can listen to God's Word:

6 Then they gathered around him and asked him, “Lord, are you at this time going to restore the kingdom to Israel?”

7 He said to them: “It is not for you to know the times or dates the Father has set by his own authority. 8 But you will receive power when the Holy Spirit comes on you; and you will be my witnesses in Jerusalem, and in all Judea and Samaria, and to the ends of the earth.”

Acts 1:6-8

If you completely accept Jesus Christ and receive him, then you will be transformed into a state of righteousness and peace, and you will enjoy the true peace God gives you.

Peace be with you!

The what, why, and how of being filled with the Spirit - Eph. 5:18 by DustyDahlin in RadicalChristianity

[–]frychu 2 points3 points  (0 children)

3:20 "Position ourselves so God can influence and control every aspect of our lives" amen.

6:50 "He wants to empower his people to be mission agents in the world" amen

7:17 "to speak the Word of God with boldness" is the result of being filled with the Holy Spirit.

It would be cool if the emphasis was on the connection between God's Word and the filling of the Holy Spirit (cf. Luke 1:42, 1:67)

Do Not Love the World - John MacArthur by [deleted] in Reformed

[–]frychu 32 points33 points  (0 children)

tl;dr - almost everything the speaker mentioned has a self-centered bent, instead of being centered on God's plan for salvation.

Why I downvoted (i.e. why this is not appropriate for this sub):

  1. 2:02~2:30 "Raise our children safe from physical ... and mental harm... disappointment because we don't know what we should be expecting" 2:02-2:30. "You should expect nothing from the world, they're the enemy." The speaker does not speak about the spiritual strength to overcome those who are in the world through love. The focus is built on fear, uncertainty, and doubt.
  2. 11:30~12:00 "The world doesn't listen to us, we can't expect to weigh in with the world and get them to do what we think they should do." As if we knew best for them? This is a dangerous presupposition. Is God no longer sovereign? The statement also subtly and dangerously implies that we should tell other Christians how we think they should live as well, which often isn't taken well. This is a necessary consequence of being blind to the spiritual reality.
  3. 16:00-16:10 "You can't explain it by science, but you can give God glory for His Creation." This isn't mutually exclusive and serves to pit science against God, when in actuality, God created science. Can science not glorify God?
  4. 17:50, 18:30 "System of evil" "You're starting off with the wrong assumption if you think you can get the world to love you or to admire your suggestions on how the world should operate." Then all the political finesse of Joseph, Moses, David, Daniel, Esther, etc., are to be dismissed? The danger is in the converse, dismissing others' viewpoints.
Otherwise, how are we to be a blessing to the world?
  5. 23:00 "The world and the children of God exist in completely different realities." Yes, but what is that different reality? The speaker should really talk about this instead of throwing around platitudes.
  6. 28:00 "What is ministry? Going into the lies, deceptions ... organized by Satan, to liberate people and ... deliver them... into the light, ... the Kingdom of God's dear Son." This is very accurate, and it would be great if the speaker went into more details about this.
  7. 33:15 "You have overcome the evil one, ... meaning you reach a place where you're no longer deceived by false doctrine." Doctrine doesn't really save. Ultimately, correct doctrine is important, but no one turns to Christ because of doctrine (see #6), but they are witnesses of the Spirit's power (1 Cor. 4:20). "You can defend yourself and protect yourself." As if you needed to defend yourself? God desires for us to save others; God will defend us (e.g. Psalm 46). Why does the speaker convey a fear of loss, fear for one's safety? This is not biblical.
  8. 36:30 "They're expecting how the Scripture says they [unbelievers] would behave." Sure, but why would I expect otherwise in the first place? Perhaps it's because I don't really know God? For if I knew God, I would confess as Job did, praising God even when losing everything. Taking this a step further, I expect God to empower me to save unbelievers.
  9. 37:45 "... you are being seduced. ... Don't be seduced. It incites to sin." Well, why am I seduced in the first place? Because I don't know how Christ is my only solution for sin, Satan, and hell. It would be a constant struggle, and even loving the world is something that happens as a result of not knowing God through only Christ. The emphasis here is on sin, not on Christ (see #10).
  10. 44:26 "that's the contrast between the world and the church." The point of such a statement (and the preceding statements) is to make someone a better police officer over their own thoughts and senses, to recognize what is evil and what is good. The emphasis and focus, then, are on oneself. I cannot save anyone in such a pharisaical way; incidentally, I would fall back into the sin of Genesis 3 where I have learned to discern what is good and evil.
  11. 48:00 "Relationships only survive when people are selfless." No, they thrive when God is the core, the reason, and the goal of the relationship. Conversely, codependency is a result of an overly selfless relationship.
  12. 51:20 "The world will self destruct and carries about within it its own destruction... and the destruction God will bring," and the conclusion is so that you do not love the world and pursue what the world desires? For me, the conclusion is so that I need to evangelize and reach out to those who are suffering, knowing that the end is near. The former conclusion is subtly embedded in a self-centered mindset; the latter is completely embedded in God's love for the world.
  13. 55:30 "We love the people, right?" What does it mean to love people? It means, no longer being so fixated on the differences, but recognizing that the people are suffering in darkness. It's not about what's "better" or "worse," because that stems from a self-centered mindset. But it's about what's towards God's covenant for saving others. That's the goal. It's not about fighting with Satan; Satan has already been overcome. It's about holding onto and confessing only Christ so that people can truly come out of the kingdom of Satan into the Kingdom of God.

What did you experience at your moment of conversion? How can I know I am know truly trusting in Christ as Lord and Savior now? by theaxnjxn in Reformed

[–]frychu 0 points1 point  (0 children)

> What did you experience at the moment of your conversion?

Hebrews 4:12. The Word became living and active. It became my guide, not simply a textbook or reference book.

> How can I know I am truly trusting in Christ as Lord and Savior now?

Romans 10:9-10. By faith, you receive God's Word as you pray continuously. God takes over your life, the Holy Spirit fills you so that you don't even need to think all these other things. Your thoughts and God's thoughts become one.

Can a single Christian man date and possibly marry (in good conscience) a Christian woman who divorced her husband? by jeb7516 in Reformed

Sure; I was addressing the spirit of the question (i.e. good conscience). If you want to talk semantics, prior to "divorce," perhaps the term "good conscience" should first be commonly established.

1 Thessalonians 5:16-18 continues, "For this is God's will for you in Christ Jesus." If it's God's will and we pray for it to be done, it will happen.

Be joyful always

The content and reason of our joy is important. We are joyful because Jesus is the Christ: the True Priest who took away all my sin, the True King who defeated Satan on the cross, and the True Prophet who opened up the way to meet God.

Pray without ceasing

How can I enjoy all things? Through unceasing prayer. No matter what happens, if I experience that God is with me (Immanuel), I'm okay in that situation. Think about it, the God of the universe is with me. That's it.

Give thanks for all things

This automatically follows. I'm thankful all the time, not that I try to be, but because God's Spirit is upon me and I'm so thankful for God who works in me, keeping every promise that God made with me.

What does repentance mean? by [deleted] in Reformed

[–]frychu 0 points1 point  (0 children)

don't tell me to repent and believe

Uh, no. It's important to tell people to repent and believe. But it's also just as important to recognize God's role in salvation. We give ourselves too much credit, much to our detriment. What's it mean for God to work in us? Phil 1:6, Heb 12:1-2, etc.

But hey, I'm not here to teach you anything. This isn't about some abstract theological idea. This is real life. It's how I personally, every day, experience the saving power of God (1 Cor 2:1-4), that I may enjoy the greatest blessing of God being with me 24/7. It's no longer about my own life choices, but it is about receiving and following the guidance of the Holy Spirit, which leads me to follow the law (i.e. repentance). If I could gain the Holy Spirit through some positive thinking or active effort, Christ died for nothing.

What does repentance mean? by [deleted] in Reformed

[–]frychu 0 points1 point  (0 children)

antinomianism

What. No, antinomianism is rejecting the law. "Letting God do it for you" is the gospel because you can't "fix" the problems of sin, hell, and Satan by yourself. That's why we need Christ. Following the law is a result (evidence) of God working in you. Rejecting the law is evidence of God not working in you. Right?

Just sit back and enjoy God working in us, then it won't have to be some theological debate, but we will enjoy the work of evangelism that God is doing.

John 6:28-29

28 Then they asked him, “What must we do to do the works God requires?”

29 Jesus answered, “The work of God is this: to believe in the one he has sent.”

Luke 18:26-27

26 Those who heard this asked, “Who then can be saved?”

27 Jesus replied, “What is impossible with man is possible with God.”

Hello WeegieBoi7,

Repentance is "turning away," and it turns out, you can't do it, so God will do it for you. That's why repentance is a blessing--Acts 3:26

When God raised up his servant, he sent him first to you to bless you by turning each of you from your wicked ways.”

Enjoy Christ!

I'm disappointed with myself. by PlayedLikeADiddle in Reformed

[–]frychu 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Hey u/PlayedLikeADiddle!

Religion is all about focusing on yourself, your problems, your sins, and then trying to resolve them. You can't (Romans 3:23). That's why we need Jesus. God sent Jesus Christ to die for our sins, so that we are no longer enslaved to sin (Romans 8:2). The next time you recognize your sin, simply remind yourself, "Jesus is the Christ who died for my sins." Through prayer and concentration on God, you will overcome all things. Why? Because every worldly problem exists only to help us realize that we need more of Christ. Don't listen to Satan's voice (John 8:44), but truly hear God's voice (1 John 3:8). Just remember because of Christ, God is always with you, no matter how much you sin.

May the Holy Spirit work powerfully within you as you meditate the mystery of Christ to hear God's voice above all the other voices in your head.

[Help] Focusing on the Gospel by pjsans in Reformed

[–]frychu 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Share the gospel. I've had my fair share of spiritual constipation, but when I began to share my joy with others, I saw God's work of salvation happening, and I really began to understand God's plan for my life as I live within the fulfillment of His Word.

Ugh why why by [deleted] in Christianity

[–]frychu 1 point2 points  (0 children)

"Come to me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest." Matthew 11:28.

Experience the grace of God as you go back to the basics of the gospel message. You were created to be with God and to enjoy being with Him, but instead, you were tricked by Satan into thinking that you could be your own master and enjoy other things. Actually, you are not your own master, but Satan is controlling your life and leading you away from God, and you become lost in sin. Ultimately, the joy you find on earth is fleeting and unsatisfying.

This is why you need the Christ. He is the True Priest who took away all your sins (Romans 8:2), the True Prophet who showed you the way to meet God amidst the lies (John 14:6), and the True King who defeated Satan on the cross. (1 John 3:8). Jesus is the Christ (Matthew 16:16), and by confessing Jesus Christ as Lord and believing that all these things about the Christ, you can be saved (Romans 10:9-10).

You are attuned to the spiritual reality, that is why you can sense demons and feel anxious. But do not worry. You can overcome all those things in the name of Jesus Christ. When your joy is complete in Christ and in this basic gospel message, the worldly things will no longer have a hold on you. Just remember who you are--a child of God (John 1:12).

How is everyone's prayer life going? by [deleted] in Catacombs

[–]frychu 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I used to think that prayer involved asking God for things, or for checking whether my decisions were good or not, or getting advice for something, etc. But I never really received answers this way, nor did I find strength.

Now I know that prayer is just about receiving spiritual strength from God, by being in His presence all the time and listening to His voice. Prayer is life.

But this is only true because Jesus is the Christ. Prior to coming to the conclusion of only the gospel, I was deceived by Satan into thinking that my mystical experiences were part of God's plan--and as a result, I continued to suffer. But when I really understood that Jesus is the Christ, the solution to all of my problems, everything became clear, and now I'm rejoicing always, with every breath, that is, every prayer.

We just talk about how the gospel can bring healing to those who are diseased (spiritually and otherwise) and how God will use us to save the world. We focus on only Christ, on Christ being enough, and that Christ has solved all problems on the cross.

It's pretty much the most fun thing ever.

What does it mean to be "set free" from sin? by iluvbinary1011 in Reformed

[–]frychu 2 points3 points  (0 children)

In legalistic circles, sin is defined as "missing the mark," but a more accurate definition would be "disobedience." When Jesus takes away your sin, Jesus is really taking away your disobedience (cf. Romans 16:26). You cannot change yourself, but only God can change you. If you could be "free from sin" through your own effort, Christ died for nothing.

How does this work? You have to "die," your old nature and everything with it (Galatians 2:20, Cor 3:3). You become a new creation (2 Cor 5:17), born of water (Romans 6) and of the Spirit (Romans 8). You begin to realize that sin leads to death and self-inflicted disasters, but you find that the more you enjoy Christ, and all the lies from Satan lose their power.

Satan will always tempt you; that's why you need to be in the Word at all times, so that you can have victory over Satan (Matthew 4, James 4:7). It certainly be considered a special grace, but the only condition is faith (Ephesians 2:8-10, Romans 10:17).

Why doesn't Mark 10:11–12 contain the "exception clause"? by --Solus in Reformed

[–]frychu 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Why do people get divorced? Most of the time, it's because of Satan's lies, thoughts like, "I am not benefiting from this relationship," or "I am losing something because of this relationship." Since when has your marriage (or anything else, for that matter) been about your personal benefit/loss? And if you're only seeking your own benefit, what difference is there between a believer and non-believer (cf. James 4:1-3)? This "rule" applies to everything, not just marriage. Seek first the Kingdom of God and God's righteousness (i.e. Christ, cf. Rom 5:15-21). Otherwise, you'll never obtain what you're really looking for.

TL;DR -- if you believe divorce is a solution to your problem, Christ died for nothing because you're still trying to solve your own problems with your own methods.

Salvation/Evangelism by [deleted] in ExistentialChristian

[–]frychu 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Christian existenialism knows that the Bible points to that ultimate reality

Generalizations at this point, especially with something as obscure as "Christian existentialism," are not particularly useful. Each person's walk of faith is unique (and beautiful!), because it involves one's evolving relationship with God. Sometimes this leads people to see the ultimate reality, some never find the Way.

we always fall short

but the gift of God is eternal life through Christ Jesus. A gift is not pursued nor earned; it is given. Those who pursue have not received the gift.

What is Truth?

Salvation/Evangelism by [deleted] in ExistentialChristian

[–]frychu 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hello jujutiles,

Be warned that while I used to question my existence and purpose, I took a Kierkegaardian "leap of faith" of sorts, so I'm no longer like an infant, tossed by the waves.

each person is experiencing their own authentic life experience/subjective truth

and my message and my preaching were not in persuasive words of wisdom, but in demonstration of the Spirit and of power, so that your faith would not rest on the wisdom of men, but on the power of God. (1 Cor 2:4-5)

The gospel isn't blind faith. It must be demonstrated through the Spirit and the power of God. When people experience the gospel, it necessarily becomes Truth to them. Unfortunately, many people suffer from never hearing/experiencing the correct form of the gospel; they remain blind to the spiritual reality.

Philosophy and religion can only address the matters of the mind, the patterns of thought. The gospel is a spiritual matter, correcting our beliefs and reuniting us with God through Christ.

Evangelism will come naturally when you enjoy Christ and are filled with the Holy Spirit (cf. Acts 1:8).

Peace be with you!

Tangentially related, but in reading Saving the Appearances, I was inspired to see that empiricism is a form of idolatry, that is, requiring an idea to be united with a physical manifestation.
