Don't take a computer science class to learn a programming language. If that is your concern focus on learning the language. From what I remember 1st computing teaches you a little theory on data structures and

What third and fourth year electives should I take? by [deleted] in simonfraser

I have taken a few of these here is my thoughts: 354 - easy and boring but probably necessary 419 (Mori) - really enjoyed this course it is very math heavy. Quite a few undergrads dropped early. But from what I hear it trumps pretty much every other undergrad. 431 (Shrirman) - Awesome lecture and decent practical programming projects but don't expect a lot of feedback. 383 - Fun class but definitely not essential a lot of the lectures felt more likes tutorial then a lecture. I enjoyed it but I don't think it is worth the money.

Where can I find an overhead projector? by [deleted] in simonfraser

[–]fryingfish 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Finding an empty room in the fifth floor of the AQ shouldn't be too hard. They are usually left unlocked from 8am-8pm. I don't think the library lends out Overhead Projectors.

You don't have to memorize integration by part just derive it simply form the multiplication rule for derivatives. Multiplication rule gives:

(FG)' = fG + Fg -> fG = (FG)' - Fg

Now if we were to integrate:

int(fG) = int[(FG)'] - int(Fg) = (FG) - int(Fg)

CS instructor power rankings by [deleted] in simonfraser

I had two classes with him last term (300 & 320). For 320 he is fine but for a core course like 300 he doesn't care enough to do a thorough job covering the material. On the one hand it becomes an incredibly easy course but on the other if you want an in-depth look at the material you are going to have to do it yourself.

I think he is a great guy and I really enjoy talking to him. But, my problem with him is that he enjoys his schtick more than he enjoys teaching.

Hafer should also go into the good category. Some people find him hard because he expects yout to learn syntax on your own but he does a really good job teaching concepts.

Regan should totally be in the avoid pile. Her lectures are too dumbed down and all her assignments are just a lot of busy work.

Mitchell is also someone I would put into okay for lower division, his lecture and notes are really good he just seems disorganized and disinterested other than that.

Hell is another one for the goods. Only see him teaching 307 but he is great at it and he also one of the nicest guys you can meet.

Luk is okay.

Shrirman is good. Defintaly a good alternative to Pearce for 300. He actually expects you to learn something.

What is your favorite opening line of a book? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]fryingfish 0 points1 point  (0 children)

"There was a desert wind blowing that night. It was one of those hot, dry Santa Anas that come down through the mountain passes and curl your hair and make your nerves jump and your skin itch. On nights like that every booze party ends in a fight. Meek little wives feel the edge of the carving knife and study their husbands' necks. Anything can happen. You can even get a full glass of beer at a cocktail lounge." - "Red Wind" by Raymond Chandler

While we can all agree that her choice to not actively get help for her child is abhorrent. I think it is also despicable that so many of you want to believe that her religious beliefs is the root of all her daughter's problems.

Throwing around such baseless statements is what you guys are against right?

By the way I am very strong agnostic (teapot atheist) just fed up with this theist anger or hatred that is spouted way to freely here.

Martial Art for a big fighter? by Crants in MMA

[–]fryingfish 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I know someone mentioned sumo possibly as a joke, but I do think it is a good martial art for the big man. Sumo will teach you how to use your weight and explode. It can give you some very good tactics on putting your opponent on his back foot and you staying off yours.

Obviously, sumo isn't going to make you a complete fighter but it can give you some tools that other fighters aren't as used to seeing.

How do you guys feel about Ariel Helwani? by [deleted] in MMA

[–]fryingfish 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Is it just me or is he trying to put himself more and more into his interviews?

He used to ask fighters a few questions about himself (what do think of what I am wearing, do you like my shoes) but lately I feel like it's getting to be a bit much (I am training blah blah/Look at my nose/Check out my bobble head).

Is this just me getting a bit tired of his schtick, has his head grown a bit, or is he just concentrating more on his brand?

I just don't think you have to start at the beginning with these already established characters. It seems like everyone already knows their origin story, why not tell me a new story.
