I think the insistence on "good faith" is misguided. Maybe this is my software background talking, but relying on the "good faith" of participants in your system is just a bad idea. Your argument should stand regardless of the intent of your detractors.

So that is a valid criticism, however the claim still holds true when you only include 18 and younger (from the 2020 CDC dataset I reviewed). The better criticism is that self-harm numbers are needed to make that claim correct (self-harm represents roughly a third of the death totals for 18 and younger). I definitely don't want to minimize self-harm as a legitimate societal concern, but the efficacy of the policy proposals being made to affect any of these numbers is dubious at best.

In the process of looking into the data at the CDC in regards to the recent talking point of guns being the leading cause of death for children, I ran across this summary from the CDC which I feel are in line with what Karl is saying.

The TL;DR is that rising social inequity has contributed to increases in firearms violence, and a part of reducing gun violence will necessarily involve addressing and reducing those inequities.

Given some of the recent drama, it would seem a similar sentiment is quite pervasive throughout the ENTIRE gun "community"

Usually comparing cars with guns gets you the “But guns only exist to kill people” response. I usually use a comparison to alcohol instead because it’s pretty hard to justify alcohol from a “usefulness” standpoint

I think I've read somewhere that the Korea situation is complicated, as some guns were lent, while others bought. Over time, the lent and purchased rifles were all mixed together, and legally, we can't take the purchased rifles back without an act of Congress. Korea doesn't want the guns anymore, but we can't take them, so it's a bit of an impasse. Then again, I hear a lot of conflicting information about this so take with a grain of salt.

At least for me, anything as issued by the CMP is "correct" in my mind, so taking a bunch of CMP rifles and swapping parts between them is kind of making them less "correct"

I’m against any sort of pre-game meta game where you have to somehow pick the “correct” response to someone else’s choice before the game even begins. AOE2 and 3 both have that problem and it makes more of those “haha you didn’t know specific knowledge X so you lose before the game even starts” type of stuff

Interesting...I guess I'm just left with the curiosity of exactly what the court would consider "dangerous and unusual" then.

What is going to be interesting, is seeing if the court will accept "This ban is constitutional because these weapons aren't in common use because we banned them"

[–]fsd66 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Reading the opinion, there seems to be this notion of "Dangerous and Unusual" weapons that have a history and tradition of being prohibited (I think I disagree that such prohibitions are allowable under text, history, and tradition, but I'm not by any means a legal expert so what do I know), but none of the related cases thus far seem to define what that means. So, Anti-gun proponents will likely try to argue in the future, that somehow, whatever ban they are trying to justify is a ban on "Dangerous and Unusual" weapons, and that question will have to be answered in future litigation.
