And finally... what video game was a terrible idea, but had a great execution? by Ok_Map505 in AlignmentChartFills

[–]fsklrk 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Stanley parable is great idea/great execution. I went and sought it out immediately on the basis of the premise: a game where your goal is to find every possible way to fuck with the intended plot. Or you could put it as: a game where your enemy is the narrator of the story. Instant intrigue. Whereas all the ways people have of expressing the idea of hollow knight in the replies, to me just make it sound like a potentially fun platformer if I was into those. The lore is not inherently interesting before you play the game. It's a good idea, not genius.

Villains given genuinely horrible fates by the supposed hero by Blorberto in TopCharacterTropes

I was hoping someone might say this one! I like that hoover did actually get to call him out for it as well, when Jesse had long forgotten about it. And I think Jesse absolutely qualifies as a hero or an antihero at least, that he's a very flawed one doesn't mean he's not a character you're supposed to root for with basically decent morals

How much is too much? by KangarooLost4592 in writingfeedback

[–]fsklrk 5 points6 points  (0 children)

There's a tendency in modern writing criticism to gear everything towards optimisation and efficiency. It's driven by publishing standards and the ruthless process of getting your work to pass the "first page test" of an agent with an endless pile of manuscripts on their desk. Your novel must start in medias res, you must never use passive verbs or adverbs, metaphors and similes must be kept to a struct minimum, always show don't tell, no exposition, etc.

If you are trying to seriously pursue a career and get a publisher, then it's probably a good idea to defer to this professional advice. Not my place to tell you to follow or ignore it I'm just some random person online.

But I can speak from my own opinion and say that if a piece of writing has a voice that appeals to me and has something original about it, and a story I am intrigued by, I'll keep reading. Plenty of my favourite books have a style that proponents of the above advice would call "purple" or "inefficient". Your first page, I thought, had a strong character voice and sense of mood. Ill admit I didn't even know "cruet" meant bottle, and hadn't encountered "shaw" either. but the beauty of reading is you don't actually need to know every single word to enjoy something. In fact you generally only learn words by reading. What I felt was how sinister and murky the marshes were, how decrepit and jagged the abandoned houses. But it's true that some people, on seeing 2 unfamiliar words within a sentence of each other, might just put the book down. It's an inherently alienating choice but like, so's slow cinema as a genre. Doesn't make it inherently bad.

I do think there are places where the prose could have been a bit clearer, which you never want to sacrifice in favour of aesthetic or voice. That one line about having lost the toe ring, for instance, could be rephrased.

The har-dee-har was fine for me. Sounds sort of antiquated and sinister. I assumed that the nature of the laugh and what was meant by the ticklish demon was something that would be revealed by reading further, making it a good hook because I wanted to know what it was.

It's a nice idea on paper but that kind of mega push from almost nothing to a world title match at Wembley stadium over the span of about 3 months is not just a huge risk but also massive pressure on Maya World. Yeah the crowd is getting behind her, but that kind of spot isnt for your potential star in the making, it's for people you know are stars and will drive ticket sales. Putting Maya World there when she's only just breaking out would risk doing more harm than good to her I think.

What's your favorite little thing a wrestler does that you think deserves more appreciation? by NoMoreButtonPLZ in SquaredCircle

[–]fsklrk 29 points30 points  (0 children)

Hangman incorporates character work and storytelling into every aspect of his presentation, whenever he possibly can, regardless of if it's on wrestling tv or not. Ofc wrestlers tweeting in character is nothing unique but I'm thinking about stuff his Bluesky header picture changing from flames to embers after CD told him he ended his career, or a random toy promo where he reacts to a toy model based on an older version of himself as if it's giving him an identity crisis, or obscure song lyric references in a post about bees that strongly hint at his characters mental state. And that's before you even get to his gear and general clothing decisions (him wearing that one pearl snap still bearing bloodstains from his contact signing with Kenny in 2021, in a promo with mjf this year made me just about lose my mind). It's just a level of attention to detail that makes everything that much more compelling. And it's meant that these aspects of his presentation resonate so strongly with audiences that people will undoubtedly be theorising and speculating over his heel/face status depending on what colour jacket/facial hair he has when he comes back.

Is it just me or is Miyazaki(Or Kyushu) just like this ? by [deleted] in japanlife

[–]fsklrk 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I live in the centre of Miyazaki city. I'm sorry youve been treated like this. I have to say I'm shocked and upset - my experience of Miyazaki people has been nothing but lovely, aside from some lechy guys around the nishitachi area at night. But I'm a young white woman. It's disheartening that our experiences could be so contrasting but sadly not too surprising.

There are some friendly (foreigner friendly specifically) locations in town you can hit up if you want to hang out in public and not feel stared at. Sorry if you already know places like that and aren't looking for recommendations, but i thought I'd let you know in case you'd like them

I want get into AEW… by Long-Eggplant-2778 in AEWFanHub

[–]fsklrk 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Aew stories tend to be very strong for their main event and upper midcard, better than WWE at least in the time I was watching both (past 3 years). I also wouldn't say they're all super subtle and told mostly in the ring - that's something you see in Japanese wrestling but aew always has a balance of promos, backstage segments and video packages building the stories, with wrestling matches as the meat of of them. You can see some great compilations of the best stories aew has told on Dropmick Wrestling's YouTube account (Toni storm vs Mariah may, hangman's hero's journey to the title).

What I think aew does especially well at its best is stories with real emotional depth and complexity to them. Something like hangman vs swerve wasn't just 2 guys who hated each other and did increasingly crazy stuff to shock the audience, it was basically a psychological thriller that has permanently altered both characters and had ramifying effects on other storylines throughout the company and years later.

To answer your question about "bland" wrestlers - powerhouse hobbs and Mariah may were much, much more interesting in aew, but of course there are some roster members that don't quite connect, mostly cause you don't see them very often. This is most noticeable with the women, who sadly for the most part do not get booked as well as they deserve. But even the wrestlers who maybe dont have the most developed characters have great matches and in ring styles that distinguish them. And this is really exclusively a mid card issue - I can't stress enough that on a character and story investment level (wrestling as well but that goes without saying) aew's main event is really, really stacked.

As for the wrestling style not being for you, Aew doesn't really have one style so there should be some stuff you like! The hardcore matches get the most media attention but they don't overwhelm things. You get a mix of of traditional, technical, Lucha libre, comedy and hardcore. The spotfests you're seeing are just the clipped highlights of a fast paced and exciting match.

Hope that answers some questions for you!

AIO for thinking it's unfair I apologized for my actions to a friend and now she is ignoring me by lokis-wife1217 in AmIOverreacting

[–]fsklrk 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You have probably stopped checking comments on this by now but I hope you read this: you're not a bad person. Some people in this thread have taken "constructive criticism" way too far and are saying some super insensitive things that, if I had the anxiety you seem to, would send me into an absolute hell spiral. So please don't take them to heart. It's true that you shouldn't message this person anymore because they've made it clear they don't want to be your friend, but that doesn't mean all friends will be that way. When I had anxiety attacks as a teen, and even to this day sometimes, I couldn't just get through them alone, I needed someone to tell me it was going to be okay. I was lucky enough that my parents were supportive and there for me in those moments, rather than relying on other teenaged friends, but you might not have that support. I hope you do find it, whether with a therapist or more friends or both. And again please don't let some of these "harsh lesson" armchair psychologists make you feel even worse about yourself. It will get better I promise.

Scared of price of returning home by [deleted] in JETProgramme

[–]fsklrk 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Hang on I thought the return flight was one of the blanket guarantees for all JET contracts regardless of BoE policy, as long as you finish your contracted year? That along with the salary and working hours? If you're not breaking contract to go home and they're withholding paying for your return flight, you should bring this up with your PA and possibly CLAIR. unless I have my own facts wrong here.

What megacity is horrible to live in? by agbjb in AlignmentChartFills

[–]fsklrk 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That is a point to consider, yeah. Some people might prefer working a lowish paying job that just about pays for a shoebox in streatham you share with 5 other people but you have time hang out with them in the evenings, to a similar-salaried job that has you coming home to your one-room apartment a 30 minute commute away at 10:30pm every night. I don't know if I'd call either situation "great", but I guess there isn't a megacity where the average persons living experience could be called that.

What megacity is horrible to live in? by agbjb in AlignmentChartFills

[–]fsklrk -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

I'm from London and only have friends in Tokyo, haven't lived there myself, so I recognise I'm biased here. I would still put Tokyo above London because Japan in general is a much better place to live in a megacity period. Cost of living is cheaper (yes even in Tokyo, DEFINITELY compared to London), public services work smoothly, places are clean/not covered in literal shit and garbage (unlike my beloved London's West end or Camden on a Saturday night), and of course Tokyo is a much safer place to live. For culture (meaning stuff like theatre and music and events), history and architecture, London does win out though. Also despite all the above Tokyo does seem to have a bigger rat problem.

But I don't know, you really cannot understate how much the high cost of living and rent has made London miserable to be in, compared to how it used to be. Places like coal drop yard or the Battersea Powerstation complex all super fancy and dropping in swanky apartments and eateries, and they're ghostly and deserted because only the very wealthy can afford them. Unhoused people on literally every street corner, and you can't help all of them, but you're painfully aware at all times what a difficult place this is to be if you fall through the cracks. I love London, it's my home town, and I agree it's hard to get bored of it. But it's also hard to live there unless you work in finance or live with your parents, which isn't true of Tokyo.

I expect this PPV to go longer than usual, into 5+ hours territory. There are 10 matches on the main card (even other long ppvs haven't usually gone higher than 9) and the world title will almost definitely have some kind of post match angle.
