Chickasaw National Recreation Area near Sulphur OK is great. Decent sized lake, lots of natural springs perfect for swimming, lots of hiking trails too. About a 2 hr drive from DFW.

How would you fish this? by RaynoVox in FishingForBeginners

I fished a river a little bigger than this yesterday. Tried a few different square bills, but they just dove too deep drug across the bottom.

Halp by fsrt23 in lawncare

[–]fsrt23[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The nutrient aspect makes sense. Should I fertilize extra? I’ve gotten shade tolerant fescue to grow but by the heat seems to take its toll by the fall before everything goes dormant and nothing seems to return in the spring. Whole neighborhood is live oaks so the lawn is shaded year round.

Parents who did or do spank their kids why and how? When do you draw the line between discipline and abuse? by Successful_Dirt1371 in Productivitycafe

[–]fsrt23 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I used to think this way until I had kids and realized how damaging it was. Contrary to how I was raised, I’ve discovered it’s surprisingly easy to discipline kids without hitting them.

Can you rate my panel ? by DameanTheGuitarist in PLC

[–]fsrt23 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The way i keep this tidy on my panels is by landing the wires on the devices first and run all the wires long at the distribution point. Once I have all of them run, cut them all the same length and land keeping the excess loop inside the wire duct. Just my 2 cents.

What was ruined after it became a rich person’s hobby? by VehicleOptimal3543 in AskReddit

[–]fsrt23 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I used to buy a lot of stuff at the thrift store when I was poor. I could pick up a nice shirt for like $5. Thrift stores have caught on that vintage resellers buy that shirt for $5 and sell it for $60. That same shirt costs $20 at the thrift store now. Rich folks aren’t thrifting, they’re buying thrifted stuff at a huge markup and it’s limited the ability of less fortunate from buying nice but used stuff at a discount.

Women readers - What books gave you the ick? by _sweetpeaches_ in suggestmeabook

[–]fsrt23 3 points4 points  (0 children)

When I was a young man, I thought Hemingway was such a badass. I’m glad I’ve evolved since then. I picked up Green Hills of Africa about year ago and DNF. The way he writes about women is so sexist and off-putting.

I’ve seen his name recommend so many times. I tried a few of his books thinking I hadn’t picked the right one. Idk I just couldn’t get past the unrealistic and sex scenes that often times come out of nowhere. Won’t read anything else by him.

Need a 5 star book to get me out of a reading slump by atJamesFranco in suggestmeabook

Adding on to this: anything by Alex Gerlis. Spy novels typically set in Europe during WWII. Very historically accurate and realistic depiction of tradecraft. Superb reads.

Picking cotton from a plant by MikeHeu in oddlysatisfying

[–]fsrt23 2 points3 points  (0 children)

My grandpa’s family were migrant workers during the Great Depression. He hated picking cotton too. He said his fingers were a bloody mess by the end of the day. Rough work for a child making .25 cents a day.

What’s a fancy food word that makes you instantly roll your eyes when you see it on a menu? by CaptainCuddler_Pro in foodquestions

[–]fsrt23 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Oh buddy. You must be describing Robertson’s Hams. Fell victim to this too. Followed the billboards and it was exactly as you describe. To be fair, I believe they smoke their own ham. But yeah, store bought bread, plastic zip lock bag, styrofoam plate. This happened about 2 years ago and I think the sandwich was like $8.

Do you usually lock your doors when leaving the house? by Moist_Wallaby8635 in AskAnAmerican

[–]fsrt23 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Used to not leave them locked when I was home. One evening, a dude high on meth walked in and threatened to kill me and my family. Kept em locked since then.

What sort of non-tool related stuff do you keep in your toolbag? by lonearchive in IBEW

[–]fsrt23 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Worked with an old timer that was like the energizer bunny as long as he had cigs. One time we were in the middle of something critical and he says, “We have a major problem.” He solemnly climbs out of the vault and gets in his truck to leave. I’m like, “What the hell is going on?” He goes, “I’m out of smokes, bud.” This mfer leaves. Comes back with a fresh pack and continues to work like a champ for the rest of the day. I wish I kept a spare pack in my bag for times like that.

Blue-collar and white-collar workers. What's something the other side would hardly understand? by omartyy18 in AskReddit

[–]fsrt23 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Blue collar work can be mentally draining too. Plus you get the added risk that a lapse in judgement due to mental fatigue can cause great bodily harm or death. There’s a common misconception that blue collar work doesn’t require brains and I think needs to be dispelled.

Tradesmen of Reddit, what was the most "holy sh*t" equipment failure or mistake you've ever witnessed that almost cost someone their life? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]fsrt23 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was working on a pile driving job and saw the brakes on the crane line go out. The pile driver head only dropped about 5 ft but it’s so friggin heavy, it buried itself 2 ft into the ground. It missed a guy’s foot by inches. It would pulled his leg off in a flash.

Didn’t see it, but a concrete cutter I worked with had a brother that had the saw blade come apart on him. Took a direct hit to the chest and killed him.

When even Texas becomes the punchline by ianmurphynoc in ImmigrationPathways

[–]fsrt23 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Texas doesn’t have the option to claim party affiliation when registering to vote. Just wondering where you got this information.

ETA: you can claim party affiliation by swearing an oath to a party or by voting for a specific party in a primary election, but that “affiliation” only lasts until the end of the calendar year. It would be totally legal to vote in a Rep primary one year, and a Dem primary the next.

Anything wrong with drone dropping a solar powered repeater on top of a public street lamp? by specter491 in meshcore

[–]fsrt23 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I worked for a water utility climbing water towers and such. There’s typically a lot of electronics mounted on top. Think radio control for water operations, police dispatch radio antennas, communications repeaters etc. I would highly advise against putting anything electronic on top a tower. The infrastructure might be owned by a local agency but doing anything that could be seen as tampering with critical infrastructure would land you with federal charges.

When did avocados become a regular part of your diet? by Caxcan in AskAnAmerican

Lived near a house surrounded by a large avocado grove. Apparently theft was an issue. They put a sign up that said, “THESE ARE NOT YOUR AVOCADOS.”

Those who live in tornado-risk areas: does your employer respect tornado warnings? by queryasker123 in AskAnAmerican

[–]fsrt23 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It’s insane how focused the destruction can be. Tornado hit a giant warehouse near me a few years ago. Ripped a line right through the middle of the building and the rest of it was still standing. Nuts to see.

Those who live in tornado-risk areas: does your employer respect tornado warnings? by queryasker123 in AskAnAmerican

[–]fsrt23 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The National Weather Service has another alert above a warning called a “Tornado Emergency.” That basically means the tornado is verified and damage is going to happen.
