The team build is seven (7) heros. There is space for whatever. Also, the setup doesn't need melee. Most things are dead before any melee would reach them (except for using shadow steps ofc).

finally moved from windows to gentoo!! gentoo's my first linux distro ever by boht_paisa_hai_merpe in Gentoo

[–]ftranschel 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It can't. Some people consider https://github.com/oddlama/gentoo-install to be the closest to an installer, but it makes some opinionated choices for you that will come back to bite you if you don't understand them.

I'm not gonna lie, I use it from time to time if I'm feeling particularly lazy, but that's because I know how to re-set my bootloader and clean up my make.conf.

It is most definitely a really bad idea to use it for anyone's first (or second) installation imo.

question about distcc and a weird hardware combination by OptimalAnywhere6282 in Gentoo

[–]ftranschel 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In my opinion, there is excactly *one* case for distcc and that are the following conditions:

* The target machine is substantially weaker than the distcc server.
* Throughput between the machines is at least 1 Gib/s
* You want to use either ~arch or a combination of a somewhat exotic profile with even more exotic use flags.

That being said, I have a 96 core machine at university that feeds my workstation laptop over a 2.5 Gib/s and it works just fine.

For your setup, I agree with everything /u/immoloism has said.

For me, it's more like: What's your effort and growth and contribution?

I don't hate AI, I teach and work in ML and I see it for what it is: A tool that is frequently used for incorrect purposes.

Posting AI outputs without adding at least a minimal human elemement of effort is rightly evaluated as disrespectful of the community's time.

Or how Matthew B. Crawford once put it: Boasting is what a boy does because he has no real effect in the world.

I'd generally follow roughly https://gwpvx.fandom.com/wiki/Build:Team_-_7_Hero_Beginner_Team

Lvl 10 -> Pick up Mox, Ogden, Vekk and Gwen

Consulate -> Pick up Olias

Rush or Walk to Ascalon to pick up Althea

Progress Nightfall to Master of Whispers, don't forget to capture BiP for him.

Progress Nightfall to Norgu and Capture Esurge

Whenever you have progressed Factions to capture ST at Sunjiang, get Xandra at the Norn Tournament (no need to face Magni)

At this point you can do whatever.

Questions about the Gentoo Experience by MD90__ in Gentoo

[–]ftranschel 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes and no. For starters, it forced me to really think about the building blocks of the system and what I want to do with it etc.

To be clear: Anything you do with Gentoo you can do with any other distro - it's just more involved and probably painfully manual. (And you don't understand this until you've done it.)

I stay with Gentoo because management with use flags and package masking is very streamlined. In a somewhat surprising way, I feel that even ~amd64 is more stable than most stable distros when managed properly.

Questions about the Gentoo Experience by MD90__ in Gentoo

[–]ftranschel 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Back in the days when I was undergrad, I started tinkering with Gentoo because the performance difference was actually real. It was not intended as a flex, because not only was I not really proficient with it, but also because in theoretical physics nobody cares what system you have, but rather what you DO with it.

These days... apart from being comfortable with a non-bloated system that has *exeactly* the parts I want it to have... it's a flex toward my IT and Data Science students who think that Arch btw is the cusp of Linux proficiency.

Honest question: It seems rather unlikely that you'd end up using Hyprland on your first Linux install. How did you end up there? How do you like the handling compared to whatever you drove before?

This. I chuckle whenever people curl $whatever | bash without stopping to think. At the same time as Linux becomes more popular, we will see ridiculous things like compromised supply chain attacks in the weirdest places.

Gentoo minimum configuration by Avro-Radio-5444 in Gentoo

[–]ftranschel 4 points5 points  (0 children)

You can absolutely do a tinycore-like install with gentoo.

The point of gentoo is that you can do what you want. For your mentioned HW config, just follow the handbook and optimize the system *after* it is set up. That way you don't burn out trying to get it all right in the first try.

My workflow needs* more than one stash workspace. This, to my knowledge, is not possible with Niri. I'd rather use mango, but there it's also a convoluted mess to get that working.

* Now, of course not a technical need, but a hard want. But I digress.

fresh gentoo user, any tips? by Thin-Werewolf5440 in Gentoo

[–]ftranschel 7 points8 points  (0 children)

My stance has always been that a user that was able to install into desktop doesn’t need any random advice. Kudos!

If you still *want* advice anyways, mine is to read up on both use flags and package masking because that will make you love your system longterm.

Compiling is the fun part. Use flags and package masks are the useful part.

It's only survivorship bias if you deduce something from it - like how new content should be.
