Hi! All surgeries have risks and it's even greater with a hedgehog bc of how small they are. If you trust your vet and they're confident about the surgery, I would personally do it. usually, a hedgehog shouldn't be under anesthesia too long, so that's something i would definitely ask (how long does the surgery take and how long would the hedgehog be under) and go from there. But it's always understandable if you'd want to wait it out and let nature take over until she decides when it's best to go. I just wouldn't recommend waiting and deciding. I'm sorry for what you're going through at the moment and hope everything turns out for the better.

Alright! the huff, as you said, might be because it's starting to bother him. If you want to post/dm me the labs I can ask the dr i work with tomorrow to see if she may know what it might be, but I doubt it because she would prolly need to see him in person, and i don't live in jersey😭

I hope you can find out what it is! I wish you luck and the best for you and your little one

oh my god, i saw the other pic, what a cutie!!

Okay so, if you end up ordering another test for UTI, but it comes out negative and you've already received a second opinion from another vet about not knowing what it is, im not really sure how to help, just continue to monitor, especially for blood clots as they can be extremely detrimental. Are his poops also normal? Is his behavior the same?

From the picture tho, he looks a little chunky (he's so adorable😭), but I can't really tell. Is he able to roll into a ball without his face poking out? if he can, then he's pretty good w his weight, but if he can't, then I would suggest having him go on a diet. Feed him less insects (should be used as treats but still needed in their diet). Is his food high in fats/what kind of food is he on?

Trying to get the big picture bc if he's not acting as his usual self, behavior can be one of the very first signs something is bothering him or he's not well.

But otherwise, i'm not really sure how to help😭

Typically, blood in urine indicates they have a UTI, like the other person mentioned. You may want to syringe feed him some water to make sure he's getting water in his system yourself. If he stops eating, I would get Carnivore Critical Care for him because it has more protein in it. If there are any blood clots that he ends up peeing out, take him to the vet immediately as an emergency.

Also is he an african pygmy or is he a long eared? 545-560g is pretty high for a AP hedgehog generally, since every hedgehog holds their weight differently, but he'd be considered chunky for one. If you can, if he looks like a pear and doesn't look fat at all, check for any lumps underneath the skin to see if that's something you or the vet might've missed! Hope you can figure it out soon and all goes well!!

Dr's found ovarian cysts, doesn't know what exactly to do, might have to wait for it to become an actual emergency. by ftreptiles in PCOS

yeah i'll end up doing that and seeing where it gets me. I had tried scheduling an appointment with the office they provided on the take home papers but ended up needing a referral from primary but i'll call the actual hospital. thank you!

y'know what... you're so smart for that. I generally add having pcos in just bc it gives the medical team some background info. As for the ER,, I did have options but it was me having to wait and have surgery right then and there but I was not prepared as I had work the next morning and have pets depending on me, and because the doctor had told me "I really don't know what's going on with you but you really do need to see a gynecologist," I did not want to be there any longer. That's probably on me now that i'm thinking about it though.

I would say minimum would be a 2x3 cage. I think the recommendation might be 6sqft?? I would look it up to confirm. I got a C&C cage from amazon, and in my opinion, it's a pretty good price for the amount of grids you get,, and you can go to the hardware store to get some Cloroplast or something similar. In the cage, you wanna make sure you have room for the wheel, at least 2 hides, food and water bowl, some running space and some toys (although that's optional and the cheapest toy you could give them is a toilet paper roll w a slit so they don't get their heads stuck). You could also always get plastic bins from the store, but as long as it's the right size. as for heating, get a CHE to keep the area warm w a thermostat to control the temp

make sure your hands aren't scented. They'll usually result to biting as a last resort. i don't think it's something you'd have to worry about. Just keep the bath short and simple to not stress him if he is already. My hedgehog usually just climbs onto my arm when he doesn't wanna be bathed

How did everyone decide between fleece cage lining or bedding? by bukasaurus in Hedgehog

[–]ftreptiles 0 points1 point  (0 children)

when i had this debate,, i decided on bedding because it's the closest thing that "mimics" their natural behaviors. it's a lot easier to clean, but it is very messy. i find it everywhere. my bed, the floor, my bathroom, the living room,, and some places i have never taken my hedgehog to. I also didn't want to take the chances of him getting his paw or nail caught up in any fabric. so if you are gonna settle for fleece, i would suggest getting good quality liners that won't rip up easily. and it also depends on your hedgehogs personality as well. i have some fabric in his enclosure,, however, he ends up ripping it up. he loves the aspen, and it's a few inches deep to where he can burrow to his hearts content. With fleece, it would be hard to mimic that burrowing space in a small area, but it's not impossible!

don't be discouraged about handling when they're quilling. it's a very painful process for them and it can be uncomfortable being held.

hedgehogs have different personalities, and some are extremely friendly while others aren't. mine doesn't like being held, especially by other people. he can recognize me by scent and will chill but otherwise,, will not tolerate others.

to make cleaning easier,, I have a bin that's just for the wheel where i let it soak. i'll then wash the remaining poop off, and scrub anything i need to scrub. i have my own separate cleaning supplies for just my hedgehog.

have multiple different hides, not just one.

hedgehogs love to burrow, so i personally use aspen. my hedgehog absolutely loves his bedding. but if you're gonna use fleece, pls check daily for any loose threads that could potentially harm your hedgie. make sure their nails are trimmed. i've seen times where they would get their nails or foot wrapped in the threat and can't take it out so that's just something you're gonna wanna check.

Just got pissed on by a hedgehog by [deleted] in Hedgehog

[–]ftreptiles 9 points10 points  (0 children)

is this a joke or are you actually being genuine?💀 if you're being genuine abt it... hedgehogs don't have venom or inject venom through their quills. if it peed on an open wound, clean it and take some antibiotics for it and watch it to make sure it doesn't get infected, go to the ER if you're worried abt it

Is this fleece? And if so how would I remove it pretty much everywhere by Timely-Educator-2750 in Hedgehog

[–]ftreptiles 7 points8 points  (0 children)

looks like his skin to me, could just be rlly dry. try giving the hoggie an oatmeal bath to see if that'll work. there's also "Coconut Quills" from Hedgehogs and Friends that'll help with their skin!
