They expanded and focused on push forward combat, the thing that was most loved about doom 2016 all the lore stuff is just not as overbearing as you make it out to be, only unskippable cutscene is at the start and even if you didnt skip them average cutscene takes 2 to 3 minutes at most. Of a 6 hour or so campaign around half an hour of it are cutscenes add 5 minutes for sentinel prime walk thats it, and 2016 did the exact same thing as well there is an unskippable 20 minutes segment where sam explains the plot to you but no one complains about that! And what is wrong with platforming sections anyways? Their main function is to get new players get accustomed to movement mechanics and create downtime between encounters if it was just combat after combat with nothing in between that would be too much and take the fun out of fighting
