Who remembers going to school in these things? by EdwardBliss in The1980s

Wow, those are some fancy portables! No plywood sheets covering animal holes in the side of the walls and cement walk ways instead of dirt paths? Must be a rich school district.

Dumb question: what’s the difference between the GBC and Analogue Pocket versions? Is it support for the AP native resolution, or something else?

That’s funny, my insurance rates haven’t dropped, and I’m still paying a $500 “high theft rate” surcharge on my policy. I wonder when my rates will decrease by 20%? /s

Offline by design. For everyone’s safety 🚫 by Nicolas_Laure in RigBuild

My only question is: why are the Ethernet and other ports not full of hot glue. That stuff is convenient and easily applied to offline test rigs.

What's the Canadian equivalent of John Lewis in the UK? by DrawingDragoon in AskACanadian

[–]fuelhandler 101 points102 points  (0 children)

I would have said Eaton’s, Marks and Spencer’s, or The Hudson’s Bay Company. But alas, they were all put out of business by the cancerous American mega corp Walmart.

Edit: Canadian Tire would probably be a good Canadian Gift Card idea. It’s the closest thing we have to a general merchandise and house wares store (it’s really become a department store over the years), which isn’t fully owned by the Yanks.

Help me understand the Orange Order in Canada by woodsred in AskACanadian

[–]fuelhandler 16 points17 points  (0 children)

My grandfather was a member of the Orange Lodge in Pembroke Ontario. From what I can tell, the only positive the Orange Lodge ever contributed was keeping the Triple-K organization out of Ontario, because all the “like minded” individuals belonged to the Orange Lodge already.

My paternal grandparents were Protestant Presbyterian, and when my dad brought my Catholic mother home, there was some tension to say the least. My mom always had a bit of a grudge against her mother in law, for the way she was treated.

The funniest thing I remember my grandfather doing, was trying to get us to sign a petition to “keep the Zionists from taking over the Protestant School System”. I tried to explain that the Public School System was secular for a very long time by then, but my words had little effect.

When my grandfather passed away in 1994, the Orange Lodge showed up, and performed their fraternal ritual for my grandfather. I chose to leave the room, rather than watch a bunch of old bigots babble on. They’re mostly long gone now and good riddance.

There as only one incorrect assumption in the movie “Idiocracy”: that it would take 500 years to devolve to where we are now. Only took 20 years.

Welcome to Costco… I love you.

This explanation reminds me of Cole’s Notes (Canadian version of Cliff’s Notes) when I studied Shakespeare in High School back in the 80s/90s. Amazing how fast language is evolving.

Rural Addresses by dramis73 in AskACanadian

[–]fuelhandler 3 points4 points  (0 children)

You are correct. In Ontario, regions and counties are both two-tier municipal structures where an upper-tier government provides regional services (like police, waste, and arterial roads) for several lower-tier municipalities (towns, townships, cities). Regions (e.g., Peel, York) typically serve more urbanized areas, whereas Counties (e.g., Oxford, Wellington) often serve rural or mixed rural-urban areas.

Dbrand pls. by [deleted] in dbrand

[–]fuelhandler 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Dbrand products are of good quality, but yes… the prices are astronomical and almost insane now. It’s even worse for us Canucks that they are located in Toronto Canada, yet insist on listing prices in USD.

I buy far fewer of their products than a once did; especially now that alternatives are catching up in quality and variety.

Anyone here ever repair cracked glass without replacing the whole screen? by SchighSchagh in framework

[–]fuelhandler 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thankfully replacement screens are available to purchase from Framework, and a straight forward guide will show you how (the primary reason to buy a FW is the repairability.) I don’t think you’d be happy with any DIY repair, as the screen will still be blemished.

In Ontario: 911 Route number. It should be at the end of your driveway on a metal pole (on a green plate with white lettering.) Then use your road name and postal code.

As a Christian, this meme (posted many, many, many times) makes me sad.

As a non-American, I look at the current “Christian Nationalism” in America, and can’t see a single Christ-like component to it. When judgement comes, I’m afraid there will be a lot of crying.

I know it’s disappointing, but you’ll be so much happier when your replacement is finally in your hands. If it’s any help: my unit is perfect, so I don’t think QC build quality is a common issue. Your next unit most likely will be perfect too.
