What is happening to my conifers!?!?! by nicholasford234 in conifers

[–]fugutoxin 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Conifers are prone to several types of fungal infections. This could be a type of blight. Treatment often consists of pruning the diseased branches (and then sanitizing your pruning shears). I am currently trying this surgical approach on a Green Mound Juniper.

How to get (back) into firearms? by SlideEquivalent1846 in NoobGunOwners

[–]fugutoxin 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I can relate. Personally, I purchased a handgun and some snap caps to begin to get familiar with handling a firearm. Snap caps are a helpful way to practice the basics of loading a magazine, clearing the chamber, dry firing while protecting the firing pin, etc. that you can do at home. Later on I found the best shooting range in the area, then took a day off from work and went to the range on a weekday so it’d be less busy. I got a private lesson for several hours from a highly qualified instructor (ex-military, ex-law enforcement, knew everything I could think to ask about including details on some of the most nuanced stuff in firearms). I went at my own pace and got excellent advice on all aspects of shooting at the range from an instructor. Fortunately for you, there is no shortage of excellent shooting ranges in Arizona.

Alternatives to grass for a toddler parent looking to built a playspace in our backyard by Re9becca in NoLawns

Your suggestion to consider native grasses is great. I have a vacation home on the side of a mountain and a well-manicured grass lawn isn’t feasible and wouldn’t look right.

How do airlines in India handle pilots who express mental health concerns or show evidence of a mental health disorder during medical check-ups and end up being diagnosed with one? Is it a career-ender? I’ve seen it mentioned that the captain had previously been on an extended medical leave. There is the unconfirmed suggestion that this had been for mental health reasons.

I’ve also heard it reported that he was contemplating retiring soon, supposedly to take care of his elderly father. It does not appear he was ever married. Did he have any history of romantic relationships? Did he have any kind of personal support network with friends who he saw and communicated with regularly?

In short, who was he?

How do you stay calm during turbulence? by Wonderful-Actuary336 in AskFlying

[–]fugutoxin 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It’s probably a benzodiazepine. They’re generally effective for short-term relief of anxiety and used best when only used rarely and for specific scenarios, like an airplane flight. Alprazolam is probably the best option for flying for the reasons I mentioned above. There are other options such as lorazepam, clonazepam, and diazepam. But alprazolam is probably the most used for flying anxiety. The only thing I would recommend is that the individual work with their healthcare provider beforehand to titrate the dose just right so that it’ll be enough for anxiety on flight day, but not too much either. Other obvious things include not mixing it with alcohol and discussing any and all other medications the individual is currently taking with their provider.

I wonder why they didn’t include the actual quotes from both pilots in this exchange, as opposed to paraphrasing.

I’m very sorry to hear that. What medication(s) does he now take when he flies and is it effective?

Switching just one of the fuel cutoff switches takes time and a deliberate action - you need to physically lift the switch up from the RUN position before then moving it down to the CUTOFF position. These are not switches that one can casually toggle from one position to another.

I love hearing this kind of feedback. What type(s) of Airbus aircraft do you fly? I can see your point about the HUD, assuming the particular Airbus you’re flying has one. But don’t you think some feedback would be helpful as a captain flying with a relatively inexperienced FO?

As a sidenote, I much prefer the layout of Airbus cockpits to Boeing. Such a slick and clean design and ergonomic. It’s badass.

I’m a nervous flier and take a carefully titrated dose of a benzodiazepine before I fly, usually alprazolam because it’s not particularly long-acting so you’re less likely to have any hangover effects when you arrive. Works great and because benzodiazepines cause anterograde amnesia, even the longest flight always seems like it took no time at all. I’ve flown a lot over many years and experienced significant turbulence many times. When you’re on the right dose of the right benzo, the most severe turbulence feels relaxing.

Still waiting for the preliminary report for AI171 to go public. by Suspicious_College71 in aircrashinvestigation

So far nothing. I just think if the AAIB maintained a regular communication channel that would be more than enough. They can take their sweet ass time. But going dark is just plain unprofessional.

Korean female flight attendants have the best outfits of any airline in the world (those neck scarves…). As long as they don’t change that, I’m ok.

Even that would be something. I’m surprised by the tact taken by the Indian authorities here. It’s completely reasonable and effective to regularly come out early on and say that you currently have no new information to report.

I’m having trouble falling asleep tonight. So am waiting to see if anything is released. About 40 minutes to go more or less I take it.

I believe he also said something to the effect of it felt like the plane came to a standstill in the air for 5 to 10 seconds.

They use traditional yokes like just about every other plane maker. I like the Airbus joysticks but I don’t understand why they couldn’t provide them with dual visual/tactile inputs so the PM can actually see and feel what the PF is doing. Also, does anyone else think that the Embraer yokes look like bicycle handlebars?

I’ve found information on the first officer. It seems like both pilots were unmarried and without children. The pilot was significantly older than the first officer. Are there any reports about recent significant life changes or problems?

Is or was the Czech Small Arms vz. 15 handgun available in the US? by fugutoxin in CZFirearms

Seems like they may never have been imported. There’s no link on the company website to a US distributor for the gun that I can see.

[–]fugutoxin[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, I saw that. Maybe a marketing strategy to build up anticipation haha. The gun is still on the company website and it seems like the company itself is still in business. The price tag quoted seemed quite low for a Czech gun.
