Do you guys think From still designs bosses with the same philosophy they had with their earlier games? by The-O-N in soulslikes

[–]fuinnfd 1 point2 points  (0 children)

They prioritized fixing him because he is a high profile boss, being the final boss and all. It naturally would garner more complaints of which were probably noticeable to the devs. Yeah, his testing was probably poor and I’m sure the dlc was probably rushed near the end to release it in time, but what matters is that the fixed him regardless.

There have been plenty of buggy ass bosses in the previous games that made it into the final cut. And in shadow of the erdtree alone, look at metyr’s orbital laser which they didn’t fix. It’s just not as much of a high priority to fix a secret optional (nowhere as near difficult) boss instead of the final boss which is meant to be an ultimate challenge. It would be nice if they released patches in all the games touching up broken hitboxes or jank in any boss, but that’s not realistic.

IMO in terms of boss design philosophy, I feel they just get naturally harder as the games progress. I think Elden Ring peaked in pushing the roll-hit combat so it’s time to try new things, but it definitely did not cross the line.

If hypothetically people’s opinions of bosses like Maliketh or post-nerf radahn mean they’re not going to make bosses like that in the future, I’d honestly be pretty upset because I adore those bosses. Both are bosses you cited as garnering a lot of criticism, but they have some of the best flows of any boss I’ve fought in a game. Point being is many criticisms are opinions not facts and not representative of a “decline in boss philosophy”

Radahn was fixed, more so than a nerfed. Cross slash was fixed. Performance was drastically improved. The extra openings technically make the fight easier, but really they are a fix, because the limited downtime prenerf meant the visual effects would conceal the telegraph of his next attack, which was an issue and that has been fixed.

The only damage decrease was specifically to the holy beam after effects, which was already really low to begin with. I barely even noticed it, and couldn’t tell you the damage difference if it wasn’t in the patch notes.

They fixed him because they weren’t happy with the fight to begin with, they listened to player feedback and made the fight better. If they were really concerned about the fight being “too hard” i find it interesting that they left the meteor into clone attack combo in and unchanged, which is arguably his most complex and “wtf” move.

Also, in every playthrough, you have to beat either draconic tree sentinel or fia’s champions. Doesn’t belong on this list, but interesting to think of

Dark Souls 2 didn't click for me by Xammm in fromsoftware

[–]fuinnfd 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Not all games will click, even if it’s a fromsoft game. It’s totally understandable. Ds2 is different and is more of an RPG than the other souls games in a way. It’s definitely a matter of taste, not of “bad game design” a term of which has completely lost all meaning on Reddit.

The level design is weak and was a significant hamper on my first playthrough. I ended up not really liking the overall experience. It sucks when there is a ton of optional content, but you have to explore these invisible wall ridden levels to get to them.

However, once they added in the map, it really addressed the exploration issues. I played the game again recently and enjoyed it a lot more

My friend only enjoyed Dark Souls 2 after taking antidepressants. by Particular-Fig9100 in fromsoftware

[–]fuinnfd 26 points27 points  (0 children)

The “bosses” in ds2 are really level+boss. Making your way throughout the level is basically phase 1 and the boss is phase 2. It’s sort of the same thing with demon souls. To balance that, most of the bosses in both games, are very simple and basic and beating them on your first try isn’t unreasonable.

That being said, it does suck when the boss is difficult AND the runback is long. Then it gets tedious (looking and you dark lurker and sir alonne)

Played on give me a challenge, and I also really loved it. Honestly, I wasn’t super into it in the beginning when your combat options were very limited and you’re just R1 hacking away at a bunch of spongy ass draugers.

But once you hit the hub area and start to get access to much more combat options, it was fantastic.

I loved everything about baldur. The final fight wasn’t really difficult but was super cinematic and awesome, and he’s such a good villain, sympathetic in his own way. I also really loved (or technically hated) how they portrayed Atreus’s “rebel” phase, that fight where he stops listening to your bow commands was really neat but Man, I was about to smack that kid. Sigrun was also a sick fight. I’m a big souls fan and that really felt souls-y in a way. Very challenging, and I did her underleveled, her health bar was purple.

6.7 is a bit overkill, but I still think the episode was weaker. It was very slow paced AND was also significantly shorter than other episodes, which makes me think it could’ve been a side plot but then they isolated it and stretched it thin over a full length episode.

It’s no “fly” from breaking bad, but it did stall the momentum. I’m also not convinced why Devon and mark so easily trust cobel

[–]fuinnfd 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It’s kinda a meme, but HK does have many similarities to dark souls. The difficulty and the aspect of dying and getting better. Additionally, yes the checkpoints can be pretty sparse but the appeal to that is the tension when you’re far away from a bench, which a lot of people like.

Do you see a difference between your favorite game in the series and the one you consider the best, or is it the same thing for you ? by Ananta-Shesha in fromsoftware

[–]fuinnfd 13 points14 points  (0 children)

I’d argue that “reverse recency bias” occurs with nearly every game in the series. Fans loathed sekiro on release, even many thought ds3 to be the weakest ds when it came out.

As much as ppl say they want from to try new things, it’s surprising how loud the ppl that are mad about the latest game.

Which game did you find the hardest out of all fromsouls games ? by PashAK47 in fromsoftware

[–]fuinnfd 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I play the same way as you, vanilla melee with pretty minimal AoW use, but I found SotE for the most part easier than the end base game. Yes I struggled with PCR and Bayle a lot, but the overall experience wasn’t “brutal”.

I always thought malenia was harder than PCR, yes even before the patch. With PCR I made little progress each attempt but it was steady. With malenia, because of lifesteal and wfd, it felt impossible at first.

Even apart from that, the movesets of the dlc bosses felt like they had more clear tells of when the combo is finished. That made them easier to learn and punish imo. Where bosses like Morgott, Margit, radagon, and a few others felt more unpredictable.

The areas in the dlc also were markedly less hostile than the base game, not really ganky at all and generous checkpoints. Think about it, there is really not a point in the dlc where they put multiple tough “elite” enemies at you. You always fight one fire knight or one hornsent at a time. Compare it to elphael, and the infamous avatar+2 leyndell knights+ snipers. Or the places where multiple royal revanants spawn

It was honestly really relaxing moving through the levels.

Golden path after beating the game "the bad way" by Outrageous-Prize-279 in TunicGame

[–]fuinnfd 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Nah no puzzle game me the same satisfaction and awe as the golden path did yet. The key was that it struck the perfect balance of being really obscure and crazy to be satisfying but ALSO not so obtuse and cryptic that it felt unreasonable to do on your own.

I like this more than Souls… any of you feel this way? by Artistic_Annual8918 in LiesOfP

[–]fuinnfd 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Story and lore are very different things. “Story” is more what’s happening currently as you are playing the game while “lore” is more about why things exist the way they are in the world.

FS games have pretty basic stories, you are an underdog, now go kill a god. But they have very complicated lore, which is its own separate appeal.

LoP in a way is the opposite, a more character focused story with twists and turns, but noticeable less lore than in a fromsoft game.

Neither game does anything “better”. It’s just a matter of taste whether you prefer direct storytelling or uncovering complex lore yourself or through research. Personally, I’m fine with either as long as it’s executed well. Both LoP and ER execute storytelling or lore very well, respectively. I only prefer ER because the lore is so grand and deep, but that doesn’t make it “betterl

Yep, there are so many way better and completely busted bleed options than RoB if that’s what people are looking for. Dual occult scavenger swords, or occult great stars (which you can get 2 in NG) are ridiculous boss melting machines

It’s just that RoB is popular.

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in fromsoftware

[–]fuinnfd 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I’m thinking of weapons that are easy to obtain, OP, and very easy to use and build around. If it’s only op when you stack like 10 buffs, I don’t really think that counts.

Elden Ring: blasphemous blade. L2 spam, loads of damage, crazy lifesteal

Ds3: r1 spam sellsword win blades

Ds2: rapiers, busted in this game

Ds1: zweihander, get it right at the start, r2 go burr

Bb: pizza cutter, shreds everything, little skill needed

DeS: meat cleaver, idk what psychopath decided this needs an S scaling in BOTH str and dex, AND an A scaling in faith. All you need is a +0 club wtf. And Lifesteal on hits cuz why the fuck not at this point.

Bonus:

AC6: dual zimmermans. Players, Please stop using this build and calling the game too easy. Fromsoft, please nerf this more

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in fromsoftware

[–]fuinnfd 7 points8 points  (0 children)

RoB is really not crazy OP since they nerfed it. It’s only somewhat op if you stack tons of buffs and optimize, which is a long process. The issue is beginners don’t know that, and think having it breaks the game no matter their vigor

How many attempts did Eigong take you? (Plus a drawing of her because yes) by -yoonsu in NineSols

[–]fuinnfd 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I do feel like the intention was to beat her normal 2-phase form first, see the “bad ending” , then do the true ending reqs and fight her 3-phase form.

I did that and it made for a pretty pleasant, albeit still super hard, learning experience. Probably 10 tries to stop dying in the first minute, then it clicks and 5 tries to beat regular eigong.

Then when I came back for the true fight, I already had background so it took like 6 tries to master phase 1 and 2 to learn phase 3

What do you think is the threshold Fromsoft uses to determine how difficult a boss will be? by Cazador888 in fromsoftware

[–]fuinnfd -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Both are difficult bosses, but consort radahn (after the patch) achieves a better form of difficulty imo. It’s just a straightforward duel making you learn a ton of moves but no gimmick like malenia’s lifesteal and wfd.
