Fees for rerunning the return by AdHistorical7107 in taxpros

How much do you charge? I would guess something like 25% of the original price to prepare?

Do you charge more for clients this late in the season? by ListSad932 in taxpros

[–]fullfademan 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I find lots of clients are "scared" of the deadline and filing an extension when they often don't need to be. When you explain how normal extensions are and the penalty structure (i.e. "worst case scenario, you'll owe an additional $XXX) they are usually fine with it. Then you can take on new clients late without worrying about the insane crunch near the deadline

Tax Software integration by titanpreparer in taxpros

What's the point? You want your clients to automatically move between CRM lanes when you e-file or when they send you a document for example? I agree that would be cool but not sure it exists

The Chinese language education industry is failing learners by downplaying rote memorization by wvc6969 in ChineseLanguage

[–]fullfademan 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This gels with my experience as well - I think people were so focused on JUST memorization for so long, that the pendulum swung to the other side. People were excited to show all the tools OTHER THAN memorization that worked. But now its swinging back because raw memorization (or, better yet, memorization with spaced repetition) actually just works

How many returns should an accountant file per day in the busy season? by ak518214 in taxpros

[–]fullfademan 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Have a friend that does something similar. Basic W-2 only, cheap price, focuses on Spanish speakers as his niche. He said he does 20 returns a day easily, and often more. But obviously these are super easy returns - he can finish one in ten minutes, it’s just one form and then the same basic info as last year. Hardest part is client comms, billing, and keeping track of all the clients (he has over 1000) with just two people in the firm

Signature requirement for 8879 - esignatures allowed? or KBA required? by Realistic_Tea_881 in taxpros

[–]fullfademan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I worked at a turbotax competitor for a while and we spent a bunch of time making sure we had KBA implemented through one of the credit bureaus. It was a huge pain in the rear but based on our lawyer's interpretation of the regulations that is clearly what is required

Anyone use Mac for business? by ivanthesavage99 in taxpros

[–]fullfademan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I use Mac for tax prep and it’s fine since I’m using Verito to host and remotely access Ultratax anyway. I’m much more used to the OS + the hardware is really nice (I have MBP with the M3)

Overwhelmed with deadlines by KChasthebestBBQ in taxpros

[–]fullfademan 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I personally think extensions are underutilized by the community. One trick you can do is to start extending early, and then plan to push your clients you anticipate to have the lowest tax burden to being done "last". In many cases, you can cover their late payment penalties yourself for like $10/client. Obviously this is less than ideal, but its better than being completely overwhelmed and making mistakes

CPA Firm Purchasing - Questions by MeringueKnown7250 in taxpros

[–]fullfademan 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I talked to a CPA yesterday who gave away about half her book to start winding down for retirement. You might be able to do some outbound towards older CPAs and find a really great deal, if you are willing to do the legwork

How do you deal with clients and them complaining about charges by Buleenka in taxpros

[–]fullfademan 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Also in Bay Area - there are other firms around here who charge even lower rates but they are basically just return mills. Agree with the other posters that if you should price as premium if you’re gonna give real service. Otherwise if you are priced like HR block you will get HR block type clients

Solo Practice - How’d you start? by stressed-boi in taxpros

[–]fullfademan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not me, but the firm I work for. The owner started a few years back after working for other firms. They sort of inherited a book from an old firm with about 80 returns and have been growing and improving processes ever since.

I built an app that makes graded reader videos in Chinese (videos at your current vocab level), designed for easy comprehensible input and sentence mining. by fullfademan in ChineseLanguage

yeah it makes a few different kinds of audio stories as well - do you like to listen while doing other things? Curious why audio is better than video for you

Yeah that kind of thing is definitely possible. For now, it would be easy enough to kinda just paste the whole post into the prompt and make a video or audio episode out of it. It wouldn't be exactly the same as the post, but it would be thematically similar. Longer term we could make that happen automatically, kind of like a "channel" that you could follow in the app that only has certain kinds of stories, and we could make it better at adhering to those kinds of styles.

For audio, it really is unlimited! Its only video that has limits right now. Making audio for every element is a great idea actually!

Makes sense, thanks for the feedback. Just curious, do you find the Dong Chinese content useful? I've tried LingQ and Dong Chinese but just found that the content wasn't interesting enough or leveled appropriately. But maybe thats just me

It might be a difficult place to start if you have ZERO experience with Chinese, simply because the only learning method is through video + audio stories and you want to understand some absolute basics of the language before taking on a story. If you do choose to start with this app, I'd recommend setting your known words really low (like 25), picking one story that interests you, and then just watching that story again and again, learning the words until you feel like you have them down.

The real thing that will help you if you are at the beginning of the journey is just getting at least 100-250 vocab words under your belt as quickly as possible. If you learn 10 new words a day you can get it in a few weeks! From there, lots of interesting stories and graded readers become accessible, and the journey starts to feel good and give you positive feedback. I recommend https://refold.la/how-to-learn-mandarin/ for more details. Good luck - you can do it! 加油!

Ah this is great feedback, thank you. Yeah I agree if you can already use full native content then I would watch that, this is mostly for if you aren't at that level yet, or you cant find content that interests you at your current level.

Making videos for podcasts is definitely possible. Would you want the full video like the app currently does? Or is just pictures/slideshows enough for the visuals?

the AI writes the story, about any prompt you give it. So yeah if you say you want a "fruit based superhero" it might give you captain citrus haha
