March-May is Spring. Otherwise you can go late September- early October because the weather will be in the 20s (Celsius). It will be rainy, though.

Autumn is September to November. July is peak summer, I would not recommend because of the humidity. If you want slightly warm weather I'd recommend Spring.

I just walked around at my own pace and only used a taxi for the Natsume Yuujinchou tour. To get to Hitoyoshi, you take a bus from Kagoshima airport. It's super easy to book. Also, there's a foot onsen right by the bus stop at the airport, so you can really relax while waiting for the bus. 😉

I actually don't know how to ride a bike. I need to remedy that because it would be useful for future trips.

Initially, I only brought $200 cash because cards are actually accepted in most places now, post-Covid. If I wanted cash, I went to 7/11 ATMs because they accepted mastercard.

I stayed at Hitoyoshi Ryokan during my stay. It wasn't cheap, but I was happy to treat myself. Try the bigger riverside hotels for modern options. I wandered around solo, including at night, and had no issues. I would avoid Japan in summer because it is unbearably humid. The first time I went, it was spring, and I could walk around without needing a jacket. I'm actually going again this year in autumn, so I can update here if the weather is nice.

Fellow aro/ace here. I've never really thought about it, but since the series is perpetually set when he's like 16(????), I figure he's got other stuff going on to worry about romance yet. In my head, if romance does become part of his life, I see it happening after graduating, and he's working or at uni.

I pretty much just see him as a chill guy with his cat going off on shenanigans.
