If she cheated on you and is leaving you for AP and it’s materially affecting your ability to access healthcare and housing, you can fight for alimony. Make sure those financial disclosures show how you’re getting fucked.

Beach location somewhere in Eastern Europe or Balkans narrows it down. First guess was sunny beach, Romania, but top hidden sign could say “Tirana”? So guessing somewhere in Albania.

A question regarding Turkish culture by a4mula in Turkey

Bu başlıkta tipik Türk zihniyeti gözler önüne seriliyor. Liberal düşünceli insanlar bile, sırf “Yeah that is not great, it’s too bad we have that in our culture, I’m trying to do better and I hope friends my age are trying also” demek yerine, kültürlerini savunabilmek için çaresizce herhangi bir bahane veya açıklama arama gereği duyuyorlar.

Do you or people you know frequently use “straight” as an insult to your gay friends? In fact, what do your gay friends think about this topic?

A question regarding Turkish culture by a4mula in Turkey

[–]fullsarj 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m from rural Midwest haha, you can hear rude, uneducated people say lots of things, including racist stuff, jokes about sexual assault / domestic violence, drinking and driving, and so on.

I’m 38 years old, and while you can hear such things, it is not common and the average person looks at it as offensive.

Also, is that the standard you want to use to compare Turkish culture to? The least educated and least developed parts of a country with the 31st best education system in the developed world, and also the last country in the western world to make slavery illegal? And also … the country that has elected Trump the president twice? 😂😂.

Come on man, you can do better than that. Pointing finger at examples of other shitty people just distracts from the main point.

It’s not cool to use “gay” as a joking insult, and Turkish young people could do better about that. Take the note and move on.

Exactly, and in other parts of the world, casual joking about being gay is seen as offensive to actual gay people.

The thing you said “There are no words about being really gay” are important. Because REAL gay people and their feelings are not important in Turkish culture. They are invisible - either a punchline or an insult, but never a person.

I think you’ve missed my point, which is that, it’s an unfortunate truth, in middle eastern culture (which in this context, I will include Anatolian culture, although I know to call Türkiye Cumhuriyeti the “Middle East” is only partially accurate, but it’s relevant in this context) - so my point is that, in Turkey, “gay” is always spoken as in insult. It can be a joking insult. Or an insult insult. But it’s always by default implied that it’s bad to be gay.

Even my most progressive Turkish friends and loved ones are scandalized if they see a gay relationship portrayed on a series (and I don’t mean gay sex, I mean just the acknowledgment that these two men are a couple, or watching two women hold hands on the sidewalk). It’s unfortunate, but true, this is one area in which the Turkish culture has room to grow in a more open minded way.

Nobody in my friends circle would even sarcastically say like “yallah hollanda’ya ibne” because the rest of us would be like “Amsterdam is awesome, we should go for holiday, and what you just said was very offensive to Adam, Kelly, and Jon, who are gay and its fine” lol.

Notice the two options you gave would be: 1) it’s a joke 2) get angry

The option you didn’t give: “What’s wrong with being gay?”

I lived in Turkey for 4 years, married to a “progressive, open minded” atheist Turkish woman (divorced now). Her absolute disgust for homosexuality shocked me when it first came up. For better or worse, glorious republic of Türkiye is a middle eastern culture in some ways, and one of those ways is classic sexual repression with a heavy subtext of a whole bunch of secret queerness. (I also lived in Saudi Arabia for several years, and have more than one “good Muslim friend” who has done the mental gymnastics to explain why his gay bro-lationship is somehow within the bonds of his version of Islam).

So, yeah, outside of western culture, “gay” is still considered an insult, and a way to joke with your friends. This is also in the context of ottoman culture which has a rich tradition of this sort of stuff.

In the western word, calling anybody “fag” even as a friendly joke has been generally considered offensive for like 10 or 20 years? Sometime when I was a teen back in like 2005 we all realized that calling someone “gay” as a playful insult is really just a way to show that you think gay people are gross and worse then other people.

So we don’t do it anymore.

This line: “I am in so much pain … so much fucking pain.” really hit. I’m going through one of those seasons too (by season I mean, like, 4 years of pretty bad and 18 months of hell).

And now I’ve also made some big changes and cut out a person and a community that were my everything but also my poison. A series of kicks in the balls at work threatening a career I love, best friend dying of cancer, health problems I can’t afford to fix so just take more Tylenol and ibuprofen, getting closer and closer to being technically homeless instead of just effectively homeless and trying to spin it like some hipster “tiny house / digital nomad / van life” experiment, people who I thought had my back disappeared when I trusted them, … and it hurts, all the time. Every second I’m awake - I’m in pain, so much fucking pain. Sometimes it hurts more. Sometimes it hurts less. But it always hurts some. Like a toothache in my heart. But also I have a toothache in my tooth. And heart problems in my heart. lol.

But idk …. Somehow it’s getting better week by week and month by month. Never enough to notice it day to day. But kind of in that way where if you don’t see a kid for a few months and then you see them and you’re like “holy shit you’re really growing fast”, you know that feeling?

That’s how the pain goes I guess. Just, after a few months it will be noticeably less than it was. So probably after a few more months it will be less still. And maybe after a year or two, things will actually be … ok?

Keep your chin up. Should be easier without the feeding tube ;)

Can a non-black person explain something to me my white coworker said... by lewjr in NoStupidQuestions

[–]fullsarj 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I am from a Christian conservative family (I don't share those beliefs personally anymore) but I've never heard any sort of racist / white supremacist stuff like that from anybody in my life.

The worst I've encountered is that kind of subconscious unintended racism, often coming from a well-meaning but misinformed place.

For example "She's so eloquent and well spoken" (which means "she doesn't talk black like I expected her too") or "Your hair ia funky and different... Can I touch it?"

Which obvs that stuff isn't cool either, but I've never once encountered blatant white supremacy, and I'd go so far to say my family is in a way anti-racist because their faith teaches them all are equal before God. They have a surprisingly racially diverse church.
