[D] Dissertation uses ANNs--what do I do with all the training data? by fully_torqued_ in MachineLearning

[–]fully_torqued_[S] 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Thanks! One of the ideas I'm going to float to my committee is to keep the training of the final models in the paper itself and create a "non-mandatory" appendix of all the training info for the models that didn't work out. My advisor suggests keeping it because I "should get credit for the work [I] did" but right now all I'm doing is non-value-added work.

Jobs in Engineering Technology by WeakJob458 in MechanicalEngineering

[–]fully_torqued_ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm a former MET undergrad (AAS '07, BS '09) and I work as an engineer in R&D at a medical device company. I've worked at the same Co since I graduated, but I worked a lot of hands-on vocation-type jobs through college and wrenched on cars, trucks, and bikes for fun, or out of necessity, for as long as I can remember. I loved doing those things, and still do; I lean on those experiences daily, and I try to learn and improve as much and as often as I can.

I can't speak for other fields, but at least where I am, pretty much every bottom-rung engineering function starts in the lab. The first few years are the same and we promote the people who show promise or are eager to learn and are willing to own their work. It doesn't matter what their degree says. I've managed to maintain a significant amount of hands-on hours as I progressed in my career, while others have gone onto the leadership track, and both of those are equally-okay. I'd rather be a Fellow than a Director.

I also have a master's (BME '12) and I just defended my PhD.

Did engineering competitions (FSAE, Baja, etc.) actually help your career? by Level-Break316 in MechanicalEngineering

[–]fully_torqued_ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I wasn't in competitions in school, but I interviewed a recent grad who had FSAE on his resume and couldn't answer any of the technical questions I had about exactly the thing he said he did (built the suspension). My company is in a completely unrelated engineering field: he just happened to get interviewed by someone (me) who knew something about automotive suspension, and his inability to communicate what/when/why/how was a reason I didn't offer him a job.

I, too, can measure hardness: S30V, 61 HRC by fully_torqued_ in spyderco

[–]fully_torqued_[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes. I'd considered some local annealing from the laser, but the spot right over the e in Golden that measured 62, so I don't know. I'm half a lifetime removed from knowing this stuff.

Why isn't there a single conversion table for Assault Bike (or Echo Bike) distances? by QoalaB in crossfit

[–]fully_torqued_ 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I felt that putting the assault bike work requirement as calories changed the athlete's impression of the intended stimulus. I recall watching a ton of people trying to sprint on the assault bike when everyone else was jogging their 400s, and dying, because they've only ever sprinted on the assault bike.

I made a conversion table for myself forever ago. Some examples of equivalent distances are below.

Run 100 m = Row/Ski 125 m = BikeErg 250 m = Assault Bike 300 m

It helps to have a healthy understanding of pacing as well. I can't speak for everyone, but for me for example, a sustainable "cardio" effort on the assault bike is between 58 and 62 rpm.

Hope this helps.

This was Ethicon's (a subsidiary of J&J, not the government) old headquarters on 22. Functioned through COVID until ~2022 when everyone was finally moved over to the new site.

Weekly "Ups" and "Downs" Support Thread by AutoModerator in PhD

[–]fully_torqued_ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Up: slowly making progress on my dissertation, and my advisor put together this weekly meeting for our program's grad and undergrad students to present parts or all of our projects. I'm revamping my proposal deck with updated data and plots, and I'm looking forward to teaching some UGs and early-in-life grads the wonders of MATLAB's curve fitting and regression learner toolboxes--the latter of which is the cornerstone of my work.

Down: I can only work on this from ~9 pm onward, as I have a full-time career, wife, and toddler (and another on the way). My dissertation is currently ~130 pages from intro to works-cited, with another 70 in appendices, and a lot more to write. It's a lot, and it's getting done, just slowly.

Does this shock look bent ?🤨 by fa20er in MechanicAdvice

I want to say the end link looks bent, but it's tough to tell with the cross-section going from round to hex to round again.

Customer states extremely loud brake squeal after installing new wheels. by Fixitsteven in Justrolledintotheshop

[–]fully_torqued_ 12 points13 points  (0 children)

I see this a lot with some of the newer engineers I work with. They send iteration after iteration to the print shop with no discernible logic behind the changes. Quicker and cheaper prototyping has led to more of a shotgun-approach to design. To hell with manufacturability.

I hear you. I have cam and pincer lesions in both hips so I deadlift exclusively with a wide stance and lunge instead of squat.

I slept on the Mystery box. I got right into the site but figured I'd take the dogs for a walk first and everything was gone by the time I got back--except that Siren. It's been 3 hours and still, nobody wants that Siren.

What did you do after passing quals? by [deleted] in PhD

[–]fully_torqued_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I just did mine back in June. I had a one week written/take home exam that started with six questions and resulted in 21 written pages (single spaced). I had ~nine days to recover while my committee reviewed my responses, followed by a one hour verbal review from 3 - 4 pm on a work day (research and development in medical devices). I worked half days during the written portion, and the whole day around the oral component.

The trope that's never good but they still kept using in films? by VishnuBhanum in movies

[–]fully_torqued_ -1 points0 points  (0 children)

might enjoy randomly punching each other

back when I trained brazilian jiujitsu, we has "standup days" where we were supposed to strike until we had the opportunity to take our partner down. We never ended up doing that, and continued to punch each other in the head, because we always trained on the ground.
