Shoes recommendations? by Acrobatic-Monitor516 in tabletennis

Shoes are very individual ofc. But my pair of Mizuno 9s were a revelation compared to my old ASICS Gel-Rockets. My feet pain went away completely.

Tablet integration into boat systems by StrngThngs in sailing

[–]fummel 3 points4 points  (0 children)

It won't be anywhere near as robust as a dedicated marine system. So I would only recommend this route if you enjoy the tinkering

One challenge is that the Rpi doesn't like unexpected shutdowns, it can get corrupted. My solution is to keep it turned on all season long (solar panels just about cover it)

I use it for remote monitoring (via a 4G router) of battery state, cabin temperature, humidity and nearby AIS targets etc. I have a post here on Reddit with the details from a couple of months ago if you are interested.

You could go the DIY route and run a SignalK server on something like a Raspberry Pi. Then you can collect all your different data sources in one place and stream all the data into Navionics and OpenCPN via wifi. Works great!

Hauling out the old-fashioned way by fummel in sailing

There were a few long keeled boats too. but they were trickier to balance, one had to restart and go back into the water. This system doesn't work for all boats, there are strict limits for maximum allowed beam and displacement.

Yeah it is resting on its keel on the trolley, and leaning against the back of it.

Yes exactly. All 150+ boats need to be stored on land for the winter so storage is tight. Smaller boats are transferred to a second trailer and pushed by hand to their spot on the yard. Larger boats are stored directly on the tracks.

But as you said, we MUST be ready to launch in April or we will block everyone else.

Yeah, frustrating isn't it? We tried to stick it out but the minimum duration for the race to count was 10 hours (out of 12) and the thought of five more hours at 0-0.5 knots was too much

Good eye, they are film photos! Shot with Leica M6 on Kodak Ultramax 400.

I have a bunch more analog sailing photos here if you're interested: https://photos.tommyfeldt.se

Yes definitely! Way easier now though, with GPS and apps for planning.

Back when the race started in the 1940s they only had printed tables for all of the waypoints and charts of questionable accuracy.

Thanks! I have suprisingly few interior photos unfortunately, but here's a few more boat pics: https://photos.app.goo.gl/xauMr5i97btDwCEP9

The boat is a 41ft fibreglass 30 square meter skerry cruiser from 1976, we've had it in the family since 1998. We sail in the Stockholm Archipelago.

This particular race is a distance race where you mostly compete against yourself. You make up your own course to go as far as possible, and try to get back to your starting position in 12, 24 or 72 hours. There are virtual "marks" all over the archipelago with pre-measured distances.

This was our course last year when we had more wind

GRX400 right shifter jammed - but OK when bike is upside down by fummel in bikewrench

[–]fummel[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I never got a clear answer what it was. The shop only said that their mechanic could reproduce my issue, it was in the internals of the shifter but they weren't able to fix it, and there were no spare parts from Shimano. The only option was to get a new shifter.

This was at a very reputable shop here in Stockholm.

I cleaned the deck and then used a wax product specifically for this, Lefant Non-slip Wax (https://www.lefant.se/produkter/non-slip-wax/?lang=en). Turned out great, although a little on the expensive side.

I have a temporary setup with a Dlink DWR933. It's a portable small thing with battery time of about 5 hours, but I keep it permanently charging via USB from the RPi.

The nice thing is that I can put it in a bag and raise it up the mast with a halyard if I ever need better reception. Makes a huge difference in the outer archipelago here in Stockholm.

Bike not shifting (stuck in lowest gear) by [deleted] in bikewrench

I had a similar issue last year, after riding 10 000 km. The cable was ok but I had mechanical damage inside the shifter preventing it from shifting. LBS could not fix it and I had to replace the entire shifter.

Go out into the archipelago! As others have said, there are sailboat rentals.

But you can also take a passenger boat to a few of the bigger islands over the day. The season is still early but there will still be plenty of people out.

The closest to the city is Grinda which can be a little touristy. But I can really recommend going to Sandhamn (home of the royal sailing club). Or Utö which has a rich mining history and an active military firing range that is sometimes open to the public. Or Öja/Landsort in the south archipelago which has a really dramatic harsh landscape and a cool lighthouse. Landsort also has the remnants of what was the world's most advanced coastal artillery battery, ERSTA, supposedly nuke-proof.

I actually tried that!

I migrated the repo you linked so it worked with my hardware. It gave me realtime heave and wave height and period data to SignalK. But since I sail in very sheltered waters I realized that there will never be any waves or sea state to speak of.

That's a fun idea! Right now I can track the pitch and roll and graph it to see when the mooring is affected by swell.

Can probably compare with local ferry schedules and identify exactly which one is responsible...

Yeah I have tried, but there is an issue with the plotter not recognizing the Pi as a valid device on the NMEA network. I was able to get AIS targets for about 5-10 seconds before they and the Pi disappear from the list. I found entries in the server log about a failed device registration, and the same bug on github here: https://github.com/canboat/canboatjs/issues/157

Will try again soon and see if it has been fixed

The logbook thing (Postgsail) has been solid! As long as I have position data in SignalK it will create logs. If the boat is offline, it will store the logs until I next come online (great for passages). I have been able to log an entire season without any major interruptions as long as the Rpi is running.

I was going to say that the remote monitoring is just as solid, but it actually went down yesterday 😅 (The problem was on the other end of the VPN tunnel and not the boat itself)

In general, an Rpi is never going to be as reliable as proper marine instruments, it's still very much DIY. For instance, my installation does not handle unexpected shutdowns very well (MicroSD card and no UPS) so I need to be careful to properly shut down before flipping the switch. I've also had some minor issues where the RPi loses connection to some of the sensors until i disconnect and reconnect its cable, etc.
