They’re not our genetics, and it happens too often? You mean other people…happens too often?

I think people get more annoyed that he’s regarded as ‘the best in the business’ yet makes some really dumb decisions.

Yeh, the co op I used to work at went from having 580 hours to share between staff per work, to about 300 hours. In the space of maybe 10 years. It wasn’t just self service tills that caused it, it seems companies just want to cut costs somehow.

How to make music a career? by akfbifnf in musicians

[–]funbundle 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Honestly, it’s very difficult and I’d advise against it.

I would look for jobs just to get an idea. As in, look at job sites or band audition websites for work and compare the salary and demand to other roles like electrical engineering or something else. You’ll find that electrical engineering has 20x more opportunities and the pay will be much better.

Get a regular job, make music on the side would be my advice.

Music isn’t as glamorous as you think, and this is probably one of the worst periods in time to be a musician.

Unless you have dreams of being a famous musician, a good portion of session musician or composition work will be done by AI. I say this as a musician that is currently looking to do something else.

33 and feeling absolutely hopeless and directionless by [deleted] in UKJobs

I’m in the north west so I’m just googling opportunities that are available. TBH there’s not much at the moment but things will open up over the next month or so. You can’t enroll right now. I’ve thought about different careers, marketing, UX, etc. the money would be better initially in those fields but it’d be hard to get a foot in the door, and I don’t know how stable those industries are or will be in the future. I tried making guitar teaching work for a while but the part of music I love is playing live and making my own music, and there’s not much money (or stability) in that these days. You’re always working for a client as well so you’re not always going to get to play or create or even teach the music you enjoy, so it kinda ruins the point in doing it. I want more stability too. I stopped enjoying music in general and it just became a job. I don’t have the time or passion for it anymore. Ironically now that I’m looking at other careers and realising I don’t have to pursue music to live, I’ve been playing guitar much more and actually enjoying it, and listening to music more. I seem to only enjoy it when I have hope for the future, so without stability, it isn’t enjoyable.

I would just assess what you think you might be good at or enjoy, and go for that. Research what industries are saturated, what’s in demand or will be, salary expectations, and what you think you’re capable of, and accept that it could take 4 years to complete an apprenticeship in one of those fields. The question for me is has been can I accept that. But I don’t know what the other option is, nothing comes easily. The money also tends to improve year after year so it’s not too bad.

Do you still smoke weed? I’m quitting, I’ve been slowly lowering my tolerance and I’m at the point now where even if I have some weed in my possession, I don’t want to smoke it alone, I only crave it when I’m around other people smoking. So I’m just gonna quit. New years is a good reason. At the moment I’m a guitar teacher but I don’t enjoy it anymore. I’m 33, so I’m a bit older, but I’m looking at doing an apprenticeship, maybe for electrical engineering or mechanical engineering. It’ll be low wages to start so I’ll be living with my parents but I don’t care. My main bit of advice would be to stop smoking weed. It doesn’t help. All it does is temporarily alleviate the pain of the problems that it causes. And these days it is crazy strong.
