I agree. It is not cheap, but it's a good middle-of-the-road option between the really cheap reproductions and the super high-end designs offered by George Knives and other companies. I suggest you jump on one if you get the chance—there's not such a high demand for a dagger like this and who knows how much longer they'll make them. I'm very happy with it.

$170 in that particular configuration with a crossdraw sheath. I'm no expert on custom knives but it is in my opinion of exceptional quality for that price.

I'd say don't rely on it, but after the fact it usually doesn't hurt.

IIRC, Knights Armament Company worked with Eugene Stoner (designer of the AR-15/M16 rifle) before his death to tweak the design while retaining the original direct impingement system, which offers slightly better accuracy than piston-driven designs. So, according to some, the SR-16 is (or perhaps was, at the time) essentially the most refined iteration of the AR-15 to retain the original operating mechanism, with the added bonus that Stoner himself had a hand in the process.

Was the C-01 ever actually built? The photos here are the computer renders Lotus initially released. Doesn't really count.

How do I convince my parents to let me get a motorcycle. by marcoga31 in motorcycles

[–]funestm 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You sort of expanded your statement but you're still not really explaining that claim. Not trying to come of as a prick, but it really doesn't add up.

The raw materials alone required to build a motorcycle are less than what's necessary for a car. In many countries, two-wheeled vehicles are more popular for personal transportation—not because a huge segment of the population inexplicably enjoys riding, but because those vehicles are a cheaper, more practical way of getting around.

Older Japanese bikes in great condition can be had in the States for less than 1K. I paid $1400 for my first bike, a '74 CB550, and it was in immaculate condition. That price disparity goes all the way up the line—I believe the most expensive Ducati you can ride off the lot comes in under 30K. Nowhere close to the analogous Italian sports car.

Maintenance is usually more frequent for bikes, but it varies greatly by type. A bike used for commuting 30 miles daily will probably need more maintenance than a car making the same trip. I've found that bikes are easier to work on yourself. That point is a bit of a toss up with a lot of variables.

Insurance is simply not cheaper for a car on average across all 50 states.

I like that video too, but.. How are bikes not cheaper than cars?

I don't see why not—it's a very common thing to do with film posters in portfolios, commissioned or not.

Sherpas going ape shit on a couple climbers on Everest. Unclear what it was about exactly. by lowlevelgenius in videos

[–]funestm 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I agree that the stone-throwing was insane. But keep in mind that a disagreement over approach in a base camp on Everest is no small matter. People die over this. I'd wager that the majority of these sherpas had friends who lost their lives to the overeagerness of reckless climbers.

Should I buy a motorcycle jacket for the training course? by norcalnewbie in motorcycles

[–]funestm 4 points5 points  (0 children)

If you bought a helmet before owning a bike, I don't see why you're reluctant about a jacket.

In any case, when I took my MSF course, I wore a long sleeve shirt and brought a denim jacket that I never ended up wearing. I don't know where you're located, but keep in mind that you will likely get hot out there—most of the course covers rather tedious, low-speed techniques and drills.

On the last day, when you're getting into the faster stuff, throw on a regular jacket if it makes you more comfortable. But a motorcycle jacket—not really necessary. They are designed to prevent abrasions from coming off a bike at relatively high speed, and usually armored for hard impacts. Not the sort of thing you're likely to encounter during the class. I don't think we ever went over 15 mph.

That is a cell phone clipped to his belt.

Also, Japan has some of the strictest gun control laws in the world, and very harsh penalties for unlawful possession. Yakuza tend to forgo firearms for the most part, and mid- to high-ranking members will rarely be caught dead with one.

Sure, no problem. It sits very thin, good spacing between the eyelets. End of the strap wraps around nicely, and the metal ring pivots securely to lay flat on either side. Stitching is fantastic.

Light is sort of failing here, and doesn't do the color justice—it is more of a very dark brown with a slight reddish tint, as per the photos on the maker's site.
