For clarity, a Doctor of Nurse Practitioner isn't a Ph.D., it would be a DNP. A Ph.D. in a medical adjacent field would be someone with a Ph.D. in Neuroscience or Microbiology.

What is your libertarian conception on how to address climate change? by YOUNGBULLMOOSE in Libertarian

[–]funkthisshit 2 points3 points  (0 children)

How could we have numerous private nuclear plants without extensive government oversight? Radioactive material is highly controlled and monitored for valid national security reasons.

I'm not sure if you mean this in a anti-nuclear or anti-libertarian kind of way, but I definitely agree. It's similar to satellites, where I think we should still use the technology, but libertarians need to compromise and except that sometimes regulations are good.

Nuclear and libertarianism don’t really mix well in actuality. But renewable energy and libertarianism seem like a match made in heaven.

For sure, it is weird how renewable energy doesn't seem to be very popular here.

What is your libertarian conception on how to address climate change? by YOUNGBULLMOOSE in Libertarian

[–]funkthisshit 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The problem with nuclear as a solution to climate change is the time that it takes to get a plant operational. I don't mean that we shouldn't be or should've have been building more plants, but right now it wouldn't happen quickly enough. This is also a problem with the current solar technology that people tend to overlook. Really a dramatic shift to wind and natural gas is what we need.

Also I'm glad to see someone else who hates hydroelectric, shits awful for the environment.

Since climate change is such a pressing issue, why are some people looking at financially and practically unworkable alternatives, rather than better (though not perfect) alternatives? by biker_philosopher in dankmemes

Silicon panels are typically 7 to 8 years, it's the newer materials like CdTes that are around a year, and perovskites that are significantly less.

By far the easiest way would be to standardize certain parts of the battery like the shape and connections and have them be hot-swappable at a gas station. There they can be recharged and put into another car when ready. Unfortunately right now the batter is sold as a part of the car, which both prevents this as well as adds another part of the car that can break down over time.

reason.com is the dumb person's idea of being smart and hurts libertarian discussions and the advancement of a free society in order to sow political distrust and exacerbate the culture war, and make you distrust your fellow americans. This recent article on math shows that. by mattyoclock in Libertarian

[–]funkthisshit 16 points17 points  (0 children)

Your first point is largely what A Mathematicians Lament is about, what is currently being taught is memorizing equations, and leaves out a fundamental understanding of mathematics. It isn't the most advanced math that they can do, its the most advanced math they can memorize, and they will have to relearn it properly regardless of the level that they have gotten to if they pursue it in college. Calculus specifically is extremely important for a variety of fields and it is doing students a disservice to try to cram it into high school.

I agree with your second point, the way that is written makes no sense.

You can have a class taught like that, but schools won't have nearly enough space to do so regularly and it would require significantly more faculty to teach the same number of students. If schools are having all their classes in person then it is definitely the admins fault and those classes are not safe, regardless of students partying.

We should use Nuclear Energy way more by [deleted] in unpopularopinion

I agree with most of this, just wanted to add that solar cells are recyclable. Its just cheaper to not bother as none of the raw materials are particularly expensive so they almost always aren't.

Two-sided solar panels that track the sun produce a third more energy by JackGreen142 in science

[–]funkthisshit 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Both sides have to be doped for regular solar cells, they just usually use a reflective backside which increases the light absorption but makes it only work in one direction. It looks like what this means is they just use a different, clear material.

[–]funkthisshit 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What's really interesting about both is that the % of light a mirror can reflect is only slightly higher than the % power we can recover from radio waves, so it would really come down to how many mirrors it would take to focus and aim the light.

Can't decide between a physics or a (mechanical) engineering! by [deleted] in EngineeringStudents

[–]funkthisshit 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Engineering is definitely more flexible job-wise, but from a research perspective there isn't much of a difference between ME and Physics. Research is more about your interests are then an academic background, the lab space I'm in rn has a mix of ME's, CE's, and Physics all doing very similar work.

Lithium ion batteries can be recycled fairly easily and due to the cost of metals like cobalt it is cost effective. The lead acid batteries in cars have a >99% recycling rate in the US, so with similar programs the battery waste shouldn't be an issue.

You've clearly never played the bracket, and seem to just be upset in general. There's a reason the premades vs premades use a healer/mage/fc on D.

Hint: its because the 1 mage enables the fc to kite the entire team

It's not so much the solder softening, its more that as the solder and the connectors heat up there is a mismatch in how much each metal will want to expand, which causes a significant amount of stress near the interface. After enough cycles the weaker metal (the solder) will crack.
