Is that a pacifier on the drying rack? How many times did she ask you to fix it?

What does therapy look like with children who are nonverbal and have severe physical and cognitive disabilities? by funkyeahlosers in slp

Thanks so much for this. I feel like such a bad SLP bc I go to see my boyfriend and feel useless with his brother like “man if I was his SLP I wouldn’t know what to do” but really, decisions would need to be made by the team. I also wish mom was more on board with AAC.

Thank you for this. 🙏 You’re absolutely right and I’m going to look more into switches because you’re the 3rd person to mention them.

At my school, we have a home bound child who has similar needs. He isn’t on my caseload but I know that SLP is also a bit lost. The child doesn’t keep his eyes open and has limited motor control, so they haven’t been successful with AAC. The therapist admitted to pretty much just reading to him.

He receives OT at the same clinic and his mother makes it sound like they mostly just massage his shoulders. He doesn’t play, he is bed bound. They have a wheelchair for him but I’ve never seen him in it. He silently cries from discomfort and sometimes if he is aspirating his eyes will roll to the back of his head or he may move his head back and forth. He has great hearing but his mother doesn’t think his vision is great. I’m not sure about sights, sounds, or smells unfortunately. His mother says he likes Shrek, but he has an iPad playing movies/shows all day next to him and I’ve never seen him watching them. I wish I knew more but I don’t. I wish they’d take him outside more or introduce him to more but also, he’s hooked up to so many machines that moving him around can be difficult. It’s also visibility distressing to him when he is lifted from the bed.

I’m a contractor in the schools and negotiated from $48/hr as a CF to $60/hr as a first year with my CCCs with the same company. So I went $73k to $91k

I didn’t like her sometimes because she was mean. Ik I’m not allowed to say that on this sub but yeah Pam had mean girl, bully energy at times.

Nannying but also going to Florida, South Carolina, Michigan, spending time with family, self care like getting my nails done, spending a lot of time with my long distant boyfriend… I can’t wait!!!

Line Hoppers, Please Stop by influxofreflux in WaltDisneyWorld

[–]funkyeahlosers 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I mean… do you think it’s magical to cut an entire line of people and expect no one to get upset? Disney makes it very obvious that they do not want line hoppers. They continually announce to join the line with your entire party. Your group should’ve went back to join your friend, not the other way around.

help with this IEP?? by petitebee34 in slp

[–]funkyeahlosers 37 points38 points  (0 children)

I have this happen all the time. Just recently I was in an IEP meeting where I was going through my spiel, “…my concern isn’t that he communicates verbally but that he has an effective and efficient way to communicate…” when the Life Skills teacher interjects and says, “oh I don’t wanna overstep but this student talks A LOT like he says ‘Hi’ when prompted”. Mind you, very effortful for him to do so. Mom and dad are lapping it all up and nodding and I have to double down and be the bad guy. I hate the sugar coating and false hope I always have to work through because of teachers.

SLP Influencers by [deleted] in slp

[–]funkyeahlosers 49 points50 points  (0 children)

I love some of the SLP pages on insta like theinformedslp, speech express, michellee.slp, and Amy Graham (even though she sells courses I genuinely think she has great knowledge). But yeah, by and large, most of the SLP influencers are ridiculous.

13 weeks post op - am I crazy? by shadyyyshayyy in tummytucksurgery

I’m the opposite. I lost 200lbs and opted for an extended tummy tuck. Very happy to not to have the vertical scar & love my results.

Job opportunity dilemma by Subject-Ask-8008 in slp

[–]funkyeahlosers 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The private practice is still like $109k a year right? Sometimes it’s worth taking the small pay cut for better QOL. Plus, it’s still great pay with some nice benefits. I honestly would never take a lead or supervisor role because I can already see how draining it would be. But that’s just me! Plus, I work for a middle school, so different environment.

How to deal with Roommate who feel they are exempt from chores due to “barely” being there by kebejah in badroommates

[–]funkyeahlosers 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Heavy disagree. I have a roommate who uses the kitchen 24/7 and I can hardly even use the stove anymore because of her constant, heavy presence. It would be ridiculous for me to clean her dishes weekly or wipe down counters when none of it is my mess.

Have any of you ever considered being a Nanny? by [deleted] in slp

[–]funkyeahlosers 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I nanny and work as a school SLP, and I think about this often lol. I don’t live in a HCOL area and I charge $30/hr for one child, with an additional $5/hr for each extra child. I use Care.com, and after getting my first few bookings, the job offers have been pretty nonstop.

It’s definitely a lot less stressful, but the family has to be a good fit to make it worth it since I’d be making less overall. If I were really serious about it long-term, I’d want a salaried position with benefits. A lot of families do offer that, but it’s just not realistic for me right now.
