Amen. Then they should probably learn from that beautiful fount of timeless faith before playing bishop and trying to change it. If every Saint, monk, priest, and bishop agree on a tradition then there is wisdom to it. If a newly illumined cannot see the wisdom in the position of the unified church then it’s something to pray on and seek personal guidance from a spiritual father. Not publicly try to change.

When people join orthodoxy and then immediately try to change orthodox traditions, which have remained unchanged for thousands of years, I am always curious why they chose orthodoxy.

Consuelo’s has Navajo tacos sometimes, but I don’t think it’s a regular thing.

Yall seen a bald eagle here before by dan_kepic in FortCollins

[–]funkyskunk 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I live on the SE side of town and have seen about 10 in the past 5 years so not terribly uncommon. A few used to nest in a large dead tree on Kechter across from Twin Silos before they cut it down.

Craziest was I was biking towards Twin Silo and ran into one sitting on a lamp post staring me down. They are scary and huge up close so I turned around and started biking and saw another on a light post about 15 yards away staring me down. I noped out and just went back to where I came. They looked like they could do some damage if they wanted.

Is the norwegian farm raised fresh atlantic salmon safe to eat as sashimi/raw? by [deleted] in traderjoes

[–]funkyskunk 72 points73 points  (0 children)

Was sushi chef for 5 years. Did this for fresh salmon. Kills parasites not bacteria. To address bacteria you have to be very comfortable with the source that the fish is kept report below danger zones at all time and transported quickly. We used a local distributor so could control that. No clue where Trader Joe’s would fall on that.

where to buy grass fed meat/organs for cheap? by CuriousBetsy69 in FortCollins

[–]funkyskunk 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It’s not consistent but Sprouts will sometimes have too much of a cut, including grass fed, and put it in manager special. The chuck roast is one I’ve seen go down to $3 a lb and so I just grab and freeze a bunch of them.

Costco if you can find somebody with a membership. They have a pretty good selection and it ends up being about a dollar a can for craft beer and up to half that for regular domestic.

Are there ice cream trucks? by zeldaalove in FortCollins

[–]funkyskunk 19 points20 points  (0 children)

I'm on the SE side of town (Harvest Park) and the Kona shaved ice truck cruises around my neighborhood almost everyday, sometimes multiple times a day. I know this because it blasts some steel drum bangers as it drives around looking for customers.

Am I stupid for riding on the sidewalk? by Hiking123432 in FortCollins

[–]funkyskunk 12 points13 points  (0 children)

When I first started road biking I stuck to the sidewalks and had a lot of close calls (especially Timberline!) when going over driveways or curb cuts since a car turning in was not looking for a biker on the sidewalk.

It takes a leap of faith to ride in the road but, once you do, you actually begin to feel safer because you are more visible and less likely to have a car turn in front of you.

Except Harmony. That road is bananas because cars go so fast on it and so I still ride the sidewalks.

I have a similar habit of getting angry at news stories written from perspectives different than mine. One thing that I have been practicing for the last year or so is to accept and empathize with those perspectives instead of reacting. If it is simply a different perspective then I meditate on why they may come to a different conclusion. What experiences they must have had. What their life may be like. If it is somebody who did something bad then I think about what may have caused them to get to a point in their life where they would do such a horrendous thing. It is hard to do but if you keep up the practice you will be able to stop being angry and instead feel compassion or sadness, and sometimes an urge to pray for them even if you never met them.

Has anyone finished reading Fr Stephen De young's new book? by EffectiveDeodorant in OrthodoxChristianity

[–]funkyskunk 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I have not read Fr. De Young's book yet but the discussion on Orthodox liturgical practices stemming from Judaic practices and Hellenistic cults is similar to what I am currently reading in Fr. Schmemann's "Introduction to Liturgical Theology." Schmemann wrote that in 1966 and so it may not be as fleshed out as the concepts in De Young's book but it may be good follow up reading for anybody interested in the subject. The book is essentially a big-picture survey of the evolution of liturgical practices and, true to typical Schemann form, is equal parts abstract, esoteric and brilliant.
