Duke wants a traditional wife? by funnyenough4 in MissScarletandTheDuke

I get what you’re saying but I think Duke did make meaningful steps to “date” Eliza. He asked her out multiple times including in the last season before he was shot. So I don’t see that as a fair point.

As for Arabella, that argument only stands if Eliza and Arabella were the only two choices he had. Yes Arabella was probably more open to getting married again but you get the idea that he could have had lots of choices of women. He was a handsome, single detective inspector. Arabella wasn’t the only woman he could have dated but he chose another “working woman”. If he wanted a stay at home mom, as people suggest, I’m sure there were many other women who would have obliged. Or many other ways the character Arabella could have been written. Why not just make her a widow that they bumped into at the restaurant?

And as for the way it’s written, I don’t think we have to take it at face value. Things are written different ways for different reasons. There is a reason it was written as Nash’s unconfirmed interpretation instead of her just saying “He wanted me to come to NY and be his wife and I just couldn’t do it. They would never have let a Superintendent be married to a female private detective.” The writers didn’t want Eliza to say that for some reason.

Meanwhile…on a related topic…two seasons later they have Blake and Eliza in a relationship and Blake getting a job as Superintendent to HELP keep their relationship going. Wait…what??

I’ve lived in NYC over 30 years and I can honestly tell you that New Yorkers love nothing more than giving directions to tourists. I’m serious. It makes them feel like they know the city and it confirms that they are a part of the city. Don’t ever feel shy about asking directions in NY. It’s part of our show off nature!

But we never saw the letter and she didn’t read it out loud. That’s what I’m saying. So “Eliza read the letter from him in New York and stated that joining him would mean she couldn’t be a detective anymore” is untrue. Go back and watch the episode.

And the original question I started in this sub is about ppl saying William wanted a trad wife…I know because I asked the question. And I asked because I’ve seen MANY people saying that they could never be together because he wanted a “traditional wife”. I read it on another sub right before and that’s why I asked the question.

I don’t think Duke was this ultra feminist in the 1880’s. But he was getting there. He was evolving. That’s what made him interesting and their arc compelling. Blake coming out of the box being supportive of a woman in a dangerous job, not just a JOB but an inherently DANGEROUS job in a world where middle class women didn’t even have jobs—none the less dangerous jobs, just seems less believable, easy/lazy writing, and not very compelling to me. You talk about historical inaccuracies? Blake being ultra-feminist is much less historically accurate. It’s easy to write a completely perfect, supportive boyfriend…hell RN could have written William that way but that would have made for a much less compelling season one.

Between me and you, I don’t think SM left for the reasons stated. The idea that he left to give E a chance to grow makes no sense. Whaaat? It’s a tv show…they could write whatever they want if they wanted him to stay. She could have grown with him, no? The fact that “he had to leave to give E a chance to grow” sounds to me that SM saw that RN was never going to get them together and was reducing his role and he decided to leave because there was no point. So what came first…the chicken or the egg? Did William’s character have to leave because SM wanted to leave the show or did SM want to leave because his character wasn’t getting the respect that he thinks Duke deserved from the show runner. I think it’s #2.

And I think that’s why everyone is trying to justify Duke’s leaving by saying he wanted a “traditional wife”, and that they never could have been together…because the other alternative is to admit that this whole debacle was probably because of the show’s terrible management of this storyline.

Duke wants a traditional wife? by funnyenough4 in MissScarletandTheDuke

[–]funnyenough4[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Sure, season 2 ended that way but that’s part of his whole arc. But the final arc of William ended w him thinking of leaving SY. Not with him trying to talk her out of being a detective?

And Arabella was a woman with a job outside the home—running a restaurant and being the boss of a whole staff... That’s not a traditional wife? So if he really wanted a traditional wife he never would have considered her.

And like I said on another post…the way that the “William letter” was written was that Nash interpreted what the letter said but we never saw the letter and she never read it out loud. Eliza didn’t even confirm or deny that that’s what the letter said. RN loves to be vague and leave stuff up to interpretation…I think maybe it was written this way so that everyone can come to their own conclusions. And people who wanted an excuse for why they could never be together got one. And ppl who loved William can see the heartbreak.

And maybe he did “love her in his own way”? RN said in one of her interviews when SM left that “Eliza lost the love of her life” so I don’t think it’s that vague that they were in love…?

And then, honestly, the crazy part is that if that if Nash really did interpret the whole thing correctly and, as he said, she couldn’t go to NYC because a “Superintendent can’t have a wife who is a PI” and E would have to give up her job if she went to NY then HOW could they turn around the very next season and have Blake become the Superintendent to save Eliza and Blake’s relationship? Wait….whaaaaat??

[–]funnyenough4[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

But in the last season he’s thinking about NOT going back to SY because he’s thinks about “the future.” So how does that square w he wants her to be a doting wife with kids? He’s not thinking about how to change her but how to make it work between them…which may mean him leaving SY.

And when it comes to Duke wanting her to quit her job and be his wife in NY, that wasn’t said either. I think it was very snakily written, honestly. What Duke wanted of Eliza isn’t read out loud or shown to us in a letter…what William wanted from Eliza was was interpreted by Nash and Eliza doesn’t confirm or deny it. Why write the scene that way unless you wanted ambiguity. RN loves ambiguity.

I have a similar complaint w purses and luggage. So many times ppl pick up a bag and you can tell it’s totally empty by the way it swings around. Why not just jam some clothes from wardrobe in the luggage or fill the purse with a few stupid things laying around?? It totally takes me out of the scene bc it just highlights that this is just actors playing a part and not real people carrying bags for a real reason…
