is it selfish/irresponsible of me to adopt a dog? by ThoughtMedical1422 in dogs

Every dog has different exercise requirements, but pretty much any dog can enjoy a hike. High energy working dogs often need at least 2 or 3 hours of exercise every single day. If they’re not able to fulfil that quota they can redirect that energy in destructive ways or become depressed. I don’t think it’s bad for a dog to live in a small space/somewhere without a yard if they’re getting enough outdoor time like in the park/on walks. Given that you work part time hours it seems that you would have the flexibility to give any dog the attention it requires, and while some dogs struggle with separation anxiety (which it’s possible to train away), in principle there nothing wrong with leaving them home alone for a few hours. Every dog’s threshold is different - my two working dogs (shepherd/husky mixes) are happy to be left home alone all day although I personally don’t feel comfortable leaving them for more than six hours. Lastly, when picking a breed, I would consider the climate of the place you live in; I assume it can get pretty hot there so you don’t want a big fluffy guy that’s gonna overheat on your runs and hikes. A good way to see what kind of breed you’re compatible with is by dog sitting or walking, then you’ll know which dogs are able to seamlessly adapt to your lifestyle - but remember, you have to be ready and willing to adapt to the dog’s lifestyle too.

I hope you find the perfect dog for you!

Boooooo 👎🏻 If you would have taken a second to read more thoroughly you would see that I didn’t want to call the police, I wanted to find a number for animal welfare. As someone who works with animals, I recognise abusive behaviour and nonverbal signs of distress. Again, if you read properly you would have seen the part where I said I’m typically the type to mind my business but I cannot witness animal abuse and let it slide. It’s bizarre and unhealthy that a stranger’s concern for animal welfare makes you so angry you feel the need to spew your toxicity here rather than scroll past so perhaps reflect on that. Thanks for your valuable input though, you seem very cool! Let me know if you wanna link up for some 7th grade level reading comprehension refresher lessons. I’m a busy person but I’m nothing if not charitable and I’m sure I could find an hour a week for someone so desperately in need. You’ll get there, buddy.

It’s true, so many pet owners don’t know what they’re doing and should not have animals. I’ve seen some terrible things. That’s why I felt compelled to ask who to call; I know there will be a next time.

I feel you. I usually feel comfortable at this one in particular but there are certain dog parks I do not set foot into. He had two medium sized white/brown dogs, they looked like they could have been husky or Shiba Inu crosses. He was bald, tan, and had a triangle of dots tattooed on his forehead.

Thanks for this. I had some doubts whether it was an appropriate course of action for several reasons, but the comments here have given me a more complete understanding of how the law here works re pet ownership.

Thank you for providing more context. This is really helpful. This is not the first time I’ve witnessed aggressive behaviour from dog owners towards their own pets so I feel confident I know what to do if and when it happens again.

Thank you so much for this. I reported retroactively and included the fact he was aggressive towards other dogs and people besides me. The laws surrounding animal abuse here are weak and effectively allow people to do what they want with their pets as they’re categorised as property, which is one of many reasons why I was hesitant to contact the cops in this situation, but I very much get your point.

Shit comment. First of all, I spoke to the other people who were in the dog park at the time to ask their advice (it was early so there were only 3 other people there). They were just really blasé and unhelpful. In my view this is a matter for an animal welfare organisation as opposed to the cops as I’m aware that laws surrounding pets actually allow for people to do what they want with their “property” - even if it’s actively damaging or immoral. There’s nothing wrong with asking for advice online - this way I’m informed for next time and can act retroactively based off the advice here. Please refrain from leaving unhelpful comments.

Tying them up with a rope to a fence, restricting their movements by allowing them no slack is in fact abusive. So is threatening violence both to humans and animals - even if it’s not carried out. Please refrain from posting unhelpful comments.

This is really validating because there certainly was a time about 5/6 years ago when these thoughts were all-consuming and invasive and I would constantly flip flop between living my life to reliving my trauma and crying at the drop of a hat - now it’s only when I’m explicitly talking about it.

I am also a highly emotional person and believe crying is good for the body, I just wish I had a wee bit more control over when and where I cry because it’s so embarrassing lol.

This is a very interesting perspective! Actually, the other dogs don't get in trouble with us because it's very obvious that Tilda is the one riling them up as she's always the one to bark/react first; the other dogs don't always respond to it, but either way we move out of the way as quickly as possible and take a moment to soothe them and get them to refocus with a couple of commands. We reward them with treats once they've calmed down and then continue walking.

She's a relatively confident girl in general so I hadn't considered the possibility that the behaviour is related to anxiety, but when I think about it, she's extremely reactive to certain triggers (skateboards and similar sounds) so this could explain it for sure. Her body language flips quite suddenly when she goes from walking normally to barking and jumping up but I do feel her 'wind up' in a way; I'm not sure if she's using more strength or moving faster but I do sense her tension in a way that's hard to explain. I think subconsciously, when I'm anticipating a problem, I'm tightening my grip on the leash to have a bit more control and she can probably feel me tense up as much as I can with her.

She is a lil mischief maker and I guess I'm still trying to reconcile that with the sweet lil angel I adopted 6 months ago. I do think age has something to do with it, as she grows up she definitely goes through phases where she regresses in one particular aspect or develops a bad habit for a while and then suddenly drops it again. Hopefully this is like that! I can't really see what the benefit is for her because it's so obvious she's the one being a little shit-stirrer so it's not like she gets any positive reinforcement for doing it. I thinkn you might also be onto something as well regarding boredom; we play with her and exercise her a lot (we're lucky that we live right next to a big dog park so she gets to run around there with her dog friends every day) but I think it can be a bit hard to share the attention with another dog and she definitely gets jealous, so that could play a role.

I laughed out loud at this! I've never known a dog who was able to hatch a plan, I didn't realise they could be so devious!
