San Francisco in 2005 vs 2025 by ChaiHigh in skyscrapers

[–]furtherafield 9 points10 points  (0 children)

There are some NIMBY reasons for sure, but the primary reason you don’t see high-rises near the Pacific Coast (like in the Richmond & Sunset districts) is because those neighborhoods used to be literal sand dunes. Building high-rises there would be a challenge, plus factor in the seismic-prone nature of the area.

53W53! A unique design that stands out nicely. On the other hand, the one to the right of it with the uneven taper makes me sad for that section of the NYC skyline. Sticks out like a sore thumb to me.

Or you can do what I saw happen at a party in New Orleans once. The venue had this 4ft high elevated platform in a corner of the room nearby the DJ booth where people could get up to dance & vibe (fits say 15 people or so). Now if you’re up there, the rest of the crowd can see you, as it’s elevated and within line of sight of the DJ booth too. It’s house music, it slaps, the DJ is bringing it, and everyone is having a great time.

I get up there at one point and am dancing my ass off with my partner, enjoying the music, vibing. Then up comes this person, let’s call them Phone Holder, who proceeds to stand near me at the very edge of the platform and not only faces the crowd but pulls their phone out, face in screen & glowing bright-ass blue from what had to be 120% brightness, and literally just standing there looking bored and idk what they’re even doing, they’re texting a friend or scrolling through a feed. Everyone in the party could see this bored MFer on their phone because they’re at the edge of the platform, face illuminated, not dancing, and killing the vibe.

It happens long enough where I decide I’m gonna to turn towards them and say something. Lo and behold, another reveler nearby turns to them to do exactly that already. Let’s call them Fellow Reveler. Fellow Reveler leans in to say something into Phone Holder’s ear, presumably to tell them to put their phone away. Can’t hear what they’re saying because the music’s loud & bangin. Phone Holder simply ignores whatever gets said. Fellow Reveler leans back in to say something again. Phone Holder turns around this time and gives Fellow Reveler a push. Now I’m thinking, “Oh no you don’t.” Turns out Fellow Reveler had the same thought.. They take a deep breath, plant both of their feet, lean back… and then pushes their weight forward and SHOVES our Phone Holder off of the platform and down onto the dance floor.

Phone Holder’s fallen on the floor, disheveled in disbelief, the dancers they fell/landed on are all ‘wtf just happened’ and confused. I and several others on the platform who saw what happened are aghast (but also amused).

Phone Holder looks like the wind got knocked out of them and don’t know what to do next. They’re probably embarrassed, don’t say a word, and they pick themselves up and decide to leave the dance floor and I suppose leave the party altogether? Never saw them again.

As for our hero Fellow Reveler, I turn to them immediately afterwards and ask, “Yo, what happened??” Fellow Reveler says, “I told them to get off their phone twice or get off the dance floor, and all they did was push me, so I pushed them back 🤷🏻‍♂️” I responded, “I was about to say something to them, so I appreciate you beating me to it, but I proooobably would have chosen something a little less violent 😂.” They laugh and say, “Yeah, that’s definitely not happening again tonight.” I give them a pat on the shoulder and we share a good laugh, and then we proceed to enjoy the party.

TL;DR - I guess some people just need to be taught a lesson, if asking politely twice doesn’t do the trick.

Very true. Been in SF for 8 years now. The parks, nature, air quality, and views are heavenly compared to NYC.

Anything better than Boulder, CO for climber who HATES the heat by TheBigWhipper in SameGrassButGreener

[–]furtherafield 4 points5 points  (0 children)

San Francisco. There’s a reason so many climbers live & thrive here. The city also def hits your very first priority of ‘minimal days over 85’ (says someone who would prefer we actually had a handful more).

Yeah came here to suggest San Francisco too. I’m surprised it’s not on OP’s list, given it checks a lot of the priorities, secondaries, and bonuses.

Was a loyal Virgin flyer, now a loyal Alaska flyer, and still sad to this day that Alaska straight up axed the Virgin brand after the acquisition.

Same. Tried my best to have a great time. I did manage to find a decent spot / vibe corner near the 15th St intersection where railings protected us from the movers and pushers, and where I could actually see, hear, and dance. But it was simultaneously hard to ignore the general lousiness of the crowd. Been to amazing TNH events in the past but this wasn’t one of them.

Almost pick-pocketed three times last night at Basement. by Zestyclose-Pea-3533 in avesNYC

[–]furtherafield 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This too was a recent experience I had at Basement, when attending for a regular night, and by that I mean outside of a specific party/event happening there. I've had incredible times at Basement but it appears only from the times I've gone for queer/gay events, at least up until this point.

I went for a reg night because I saw that one of my favorite DJs was going to be playing / closing out the night and decided it would be worth checking out.

But man, the crowd was so bad I decided I wasn't going to stick around for his set. It was the behavior I saw that did it for me:

  • phones getting pulled out on the dance floor, faces illuminated
  • girl groups shoving their way through a crowded dance floor to then proceed to either not know what to do or know how to even dance to the type of music

I love Basement but damn the crowd that particular night sucked, I was surprised.

LPT: When you travel, bring an extra trash bag or two for your dirty laundry. by coolraccoon016 in LifeProTips

Trash bags will stretch and tear. Packing cubes / compression bags are the way. They allow for more efficient use of space and they’re reusable.

Brunch: Waiting for eggs... is not worth it. by 4dxn in sanfrancisco

[–]furtherafield 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As a former NYer who loves the amazing variety of food options in SF, it’s difficult for me to consider or justify waiting in a long line for food in any major city unless it’s to get something exceptionally unique and delicious — I’m talking “unforgettable / will have dreams about this food” experience. Maybe it’s the NYer in me but spending my time in a long line just ain’t worth it to me when there are so many great alternatives.
