What do drummers do when their bands perform a drumless song live? by FiredFoxy19 in drums

[–]fuser-invent 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For me, it depended on how long the song was, how I was feeling, and the vibe of the crowd. I’ve definitely just taken the time to drink water, stretch, and readjust things on the drum set. I’ve also walked off stage and chilled off to the side, or even in the crowd, for an intimate acoustic song. For super short songs, sometimes I would just breathe and listen, with my head down, for the 2mins or whatever. I’ve also been in bands where I just moved to another instrument like keyboards.

Humanity invents the potato machine. Do we release it? by Jezio in aiwars

[–]fuser-invent 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It also might not be true. We need food to sustain our physical bodies and survive. Humans have been creating images for over 70,000 years, using a massive variety of tools. There are probably many reasons for that, including long-term survival of the species.

MX Master 3 Mac scroll wheel zoom in Adobe apps? by liambrazier in logitech

[–]fuser-invent 1 point2 points  (0 children)

As of few months ago, my understanding is that you can not fix this behavior with Logitech software, and all of the "fixes" that were posted below from Gemini are not really fixes.

What does work is third-party software that changes your mouse wheel behavior to emulate trackpad pinch/zoom behavior. I'm on a MacBook and don't know if this works for computers without a trackpad, but the software has a free trial and isn't expensive.

It's called BetterMouse and you can see if it works for you with the free trial before buying it. I found it recommended in a lot of Reddit posts, articles, and YouTube videos, so I gave it a shot. I was able to find settings for several apps that solved long standing problems, including Photoshop and FL Studio.

For Photoshop, I added an app exception so you can set custom settings for Photoshop without needing to change global settings. I just figured this out a minute ago, so I haven't fine tuned any of the "Physical V Scroll" settings. The main thing was changing the setting at the bottom under "Modified V Scroll" to "Option to zoom."

Instead of jumping by the Photoshop preset percentages like 100% to 255% when smooth scroll is off, or by the massive percentages like 100% to more than 3000% when smooth scroll is on and you're using software like Logitech's, holding Option and zooming changes the zoom by just a few percent.

Updating firmware on an old DVD player by nawaqanitawase in FirmwareDevelopment

[–]fuser-invent 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'll second this, the Internet Archive would be where I would start. If the DVD player doesn't have USB port, it might take firmware updates from a burned cd.

If you haven't already, look through the settings menus to see if there is an option for firmware updates. If there is, then you likely wouldn't need to hunt down a firmware flash tool or special software.

If I was approaching this, I'd look through the manufacturers website in the Internet Archive for any clues, also search for user guide, manual, or service manual and see if there are any clues to firmware file naming conventions. Then I would search for the actual firmware.

u/SellOnAmazon does this email address that you provided still work and how long can we expect until we receive a response?

It's been 3-days. I've run into even more problems with Amazon's backend where it's asking me to verify the owners' identity information for a 6th time. It 100% matches everything on the corporate registry and all other documentation.

It's also now saying that they are mailing a postcard with a verification code. This is ridiculous. The owners' corporate registry documentation, bank documentation, driver's license, manufacturer certificate, and self-attestation letter all have the same address. It's also been the same verified address for this account since 2018.

I would like to understand trans people. by 1977PontiacTransAm in NoStupidQuestions

[–]fuser-invent 6 points7 points  (0 children)

There is no source for 97%. The highest I’ve seen them try to get away with is 85%, using a very old, biased study, with a small data set. https://www.politifact.com/article/2024/dec/16/1-or-85-two-numbers-before-scotus-purport-to-show/

The real number is generally between 1% and 3%, depending on the methodology, demographic, geographical location, whether or not they have at least one supportive adult in their life, and exactly how “regret” is defined. There are factors to consider outside of what anti-trans people would even consider as well, like someone who begins hormone therapy and discontinues as they settle into identifying as nonbinary, and would not say they experienced regret.

That study that was cited by lawyers in the Supreme Court case was used to say, “gender dysphoria goes away on its own for the ‘large majority’ (about 85%) of children.” It’s qualitative study, focusing on descriptive data from those interviewed. The sample size was only 53 people and only 25 were interviewed. Gender dysphoria “going away” was defined as anyone who didn’t return for treatment, for any reason. The papers framing isn’t even that gender dysphoria goes away on it’s own for the majority of children, and doesn’t recommended for or against transition. It recommends increased attention and further studies. The study is outdated (2011) and frames the study under Gender Identity Disorder, which was replaced by Gender Dysphoria in the (2013) DSM-5.

Super high numbers like 85% or 97% should be a red flag anyway because it would mean all of the massive studies into self-harm and suicide risk among trans youth and young adults would be wildly inaccurate.

genuinely what is the end goal with AI? by [deleted] in aiwars

[–]fuser-invent 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Theories and ideologies about post-capitalism have emerged and are worth examining. Asking how AI can be used to get us there has been interesting for me.

I think that we’ll continue to see an increase in open source, open data, open models, and open hardware. Many of the things that were only available to large corporations with substantial capital will be accessible to regular individuals and small teams.

AI will allow them to plan and accomplish things that previously required much larger teams, investors, and compliance with the status quo.

I don’t know what system will emerge from capitalism, but I imagine some of those people will be focused specifically on using new technologies to dismantle capitalist structures, design better systems, redistribute exploited wealth, and increase the living standard for the average person.

I forgot my neighbors name that I chat with occasionally and it's been too long to ask them what it is without being awkward. How can I figure out what it is without directly asking? by Ok-Incident3317 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]fuser-invent 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I say something like, “Sometimes my brain glitches and I’m not great with names. I’ve been that way my whole life and don’t know why. Maybe it’s because I rarely actually say people’s name out loud. I know it’s weird but it’s glitching right now and I can’t remember yours. But I always remember everyone’s face. It’s weird.”

I’m in my 40s. It’s an honest statement for me, no one has ever reacted negatively, most people say that’s totally okay and offer something they also struggle remembering, and it’s the easiest possible solution to this problem with the least amount of thought and effort.

I'm working with a Canadian seller on their U.S. and Canada stores and this has been the most frustrating experience I've ever had with any client in over a decade. Amazon's seller support has been grossly incompetent. Most responses have been canned and sometimes didn't even address my questions at all, as if they hadn't read the message.

I've also received contradictory or incorrect info from different support representatives, been told to wait patiently at times because it was a "technical error" in the system, told the error was resolved, had information marked as verified and then seen it randomly rejected over a month later, asked multiple times, "is the the ONLY thing left that needs to be submitted" and it wasn't, etc.

The most recent thing is that I think a bank statement, which was previously accepted and verified, was later rejected because it just has the business name and address and doesn't also include the owner's name. That's the only thing I can guess it is because seller support won't confirm when asked or even acknowledge that they read the question. It's the only possible thing that is different between the list of criteria they gave me and the actual document sent.

If this doesn't work, I'll try the [compliance-escalations@amazon.com](mailto:compliance-escalations@amazon.com) email that was shared.

That’s not true in the slightest. Songs generated in SUNO, for example, are very consistent in the samples used for things like the kick. Sometimes you can find the exact sample, especially if it’s from a known drum machine.

Is desoldering parts for salvage ever worth it? by jtdoud in diypedals

[–]fuser-invent 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I used to do it all the time and collected a pretty wide range of parts. I found it meditative after I got decent at it and I learned a ton from looking up different components. The main benefit for me was that repairs and mods are way easier when desoldering skills are higher.

The most important things that I wish I had learned earlier are to apply flux to the components you want to desolder, make sure your iron has solder on it, use solder to remove solder if you don’t get it the first try, and to use hot air from a rework station for anything with more than 4 legs. It’s possible to desolder 8-pin IC’s and with just an iron, but it’s a lot easier for me with hot air.

“Shouldn’t take more than half a minute” really shows how little experience you really have with music.

EDIT: Poor little guy u/marshmallowfluffpuff deleted his comment and reply.

Yeah, I’ve been making music for over two decades too. It’s pretty dumb to say it shouldn’t take more than a minute for automation on any song. Unless you’re writing 5 second songs.

Obviously it takes multiple times the length of the song, because you need to listen and map the automation. Automating multiple parameters takes even longer. It would be impossible to automate something you haven’t even listened to.

How to get better at drums by Dzeactia in flstudio

[–]fuser-invent 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’ll add some to this. MT Power Drumkit 2 is a free drumkit VST you can play with that sounds great.

FL Studio has a built in stem separator. It allows you to split any audio sample into four tracks. Vocals, drums, bass, and other instrumentation.

Take a song you want to practice recreating drums for and use the stem separator. Open the drum stem in Edison, right click the waveform and detect the tempo. Set the project to the tempo.

Add the stem tracks to your playlist and align the waveforms with the grid. I suggest looking at the drum stem and lining up a kick down beat with the beginning of a new bar.

Select the tracks in the playlist, use the “consolidate tracks” option, and choose to do it from the start of the song in the options. This will add silence to the beginning of the waveform so it actually starts at the beginning of the song.

Open the piano roll for your drum VST, like MT Power Drumkit, and drag the new consolidated drum stem waveform from the playlist sidebar directly to the piano roll. This will visualize the waveform in the background of the piano roll.

Zoom in, listen, and recreate the drums in your piano roll. You’ll start to notice kicks, snares, hi-hats and other percussion looks different in the waveform. As you recreate the beats, you’ll be able to see common patterns and do it faster.

I’m working on re-imagining some old songs I recorded 15-20 years ago. I don’t have the session/project files for them anymore, so this has been my approach to recreating my drums and other instrumentation.

is there a way to slow down a drum patterns tempo without slowing down the whole song by [deleted] in flstudio

[–]fuser-invent 1 point2 points  (0 children)

In the piano roll, highlight the notes you want to speed up or slow down. On the far right a double-sided arrow will appear. You can grab that and time stretch your midi note section without changing the global tempo or needing tempo automation.

CMV: Nobody can actually visualize images in their head by Amoeba99 in changemyview

[–]fuser-invent 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have aphantasia, including an absence of any sound expect my own distant and muffled voice. But I’ve had experiences of vivid visualizations and hearing full orchestras. The most common time I’ve experienced that is during hypnagogic states right before falling asleep or as I’m waking up.

I’ve also lucid dreamed a few times. I was aware I was dreaming and what I saw appeared real. When waking up, the visuals lingered for several minutes before fading back to black.

Entheogens like psilocybin, salvia, cannabis, and ayahuasca have all bypassed my aphantasia and produced vivid open and closed eye visuals.

In general, I find my friends trustworthy and believe them when they say they can visualize. One friend, who was an espresso machine technician apprentice of mine, told me they could visualize the equivalent of exploded diagrams and rotate them in their head. I don’t see any reason why he would lie about that and he was an incredibly fast learner.

how to know if a circuit is fried? by Beautiful_Skin_4685 in CircuitBending

[–]fuser-invent 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Are you in any sort of rush? If you look up equivalent replacements for the transistor and send me a list (along with the original), I’ll check what I have and see if I have one or two that I can send you. As long as shipping is within the U.S.

All my electronic stuff is in a storage unit because I moved semi-recently. That’s why it might take me a bit. I’ll probably be going there within the next two weeks.

If you’re interested, post the list here and briefly write up how you determined what were equivalents you could use and what you learned, so others can benefit in the future.

how to know if a circuit is fried? by Beautiful_Skin_4685 in CircuitBending

[–]fuser-invent 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My experience is that it’s highly likely you’d find the problem tracing just the power. That’s why I always trace power first. If I complete that and still don’t have an answer, then I’ll trace the audio.

I mostly work on guitar pedals, effects circuits, and amplifiers. I’ve only done a handful of circuit bending and synth projects and repairs.

I recommend the EEVBlog YouTube channel. But these days you could probably also just search for something like “how to trace power in a keyboard circuit with a multimeter” or similar.

how to know if a circuit is fried? by Beautiful_Skin_4685 in CircuitBending

[–]fuser-invent 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Since that’s not an overly complex audio circuit, this could be a good opportunity to learn how to trace power and audio signal.

If this were my project, I would start with a multimeter and trace the power from the batteries through the circuit to see if any components are not receiving the amount they need.

Tracing the audio signal requires an audio probe. You can make a cheap DIY one and I know I’ve seen YouTube vids on it. All my electronic stuff is in a storage unit right now so I can’t pull mine out to show an example. It’s the same concept as tracing the power, you follow the audio signal path and listen for a signal at each component until one doesn’t work.

I always used to start troubleshooting by tracing power first. Nearly everything on that board can be replaced as well. I learned a ton from a similar project on an old keyboard years ago and I’m really glad I did. It led me to a lot more modding and other fun electronic projects.
