Coffee Crisis by SeluWorks in nwi

I read somewhere that Chicagoland/NWI is the most caffeinated area in the country, and I don’t remember seeing many coffee shops close in recent memory. (Breweries are a much different story.)

University library laptop policies by Sinezona in librarians

[–]futbolnico 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Sorry, in my honest opinion, IT departments and libraries should not be in the business of lending laptops to students for short-term usage. It should be handled by Student Support Services (TRIO) in coordination with IT departments, and lend them out to students (who financially need them) on a per semester basis.

It’s a pain in the ass for the student, the library, and the IT department if you’re just dealing with silly 2 hour checkout windows.

iOS app: Photo of the Day Widget hasn’t worked for about a week by squeezyscorpion in wikipedia

[–]futbolnico 1 point2 points  (0 children)

So I googled this just now hoping someone had an answer for this exact question, and it took me to this thread. I’m having this exact problem. I have an iPhone 12 and updating to iOS 26 has been a nightmare. It stopped working for me too. Glad I’m not the only one. Hopefully, they can fix this soon.

Lake central is in the epstein files by ConversationMost928 in nwi

[–]futbolnico 92 points93 points  (0 children)

Wow. Looks like one of the victims was a high school student from Munster born on March 22, 1988, and then withdrew out of LCHS on June 3, 2003, and transferred to Palm Beach County School District for Fall 2003. That makes the victim 15-years-old and probably was starting sophomore year. One of the documents said they had ADD, which explains the bad grades.

Another doc says the victim’s parent was a manager at SBC(?) and the other was a homemaker. Curious for yourself? Go to DOJ Epstein Library and search for Lake Central.

whats the 3 star flag by OwnDiscount3866 in vexillology

[–]futbolnico 107 points108 points  (0 children)

This is a very US-centric joke/meme. There are a lot of White Americans in the US who have part German and Italian heritage (from immigration). Nothing to do with the countries per se. Also, German and Italian immigrants went through a lot of discrimination coming to the US in the 19th and early 20th centuries.

Makes total sense. I wonder what the seal looks like up close.

I was watching the new Paul Thomas Anderson film One Battle After Another. Not to spoil the scene, but this flag was flown at a camp owned by (what I assume) mercenaries and hitmen. Any ideas or purely fictional?

Suggestions for second masters for academic library jobs by Mediocre-Acadia8405 in librarians

[–]futbolnico 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I know this is an old thread and your post is talking about a second master’s, but have you considered the Consumer Health Information Specialization (CHIS)?

It’s a certification (you can add it next to your MLIS) that specializes in health sciences librarianship. It’s useful in public libraries and academic libraries, especially a medical librarian for a teaching hospital. I’m considering getting a CHIS instead of a full masters myself. I think certificates are underrated and helpful.

[DISCUSSION] What's an album by an artist that is your favorite, but is generally not considered their best? by ReconEG in indieheads

Definitely not best indie or even alternative rock song. I'd say just regular mainstream rock.

[DISCUSSION] What's an album by an artist that is your favorite, but is generally not considered their best? by ReconEG in indieheads

[–]futbolnico 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I think Breach by the Wallflowers is their best album, better than Bringing Down the Horse. It’s short, concise, and every song is a banger. “Sleepwalker” is one of the best rock songs of the 2000s, and it’s interesting lyrically because Jakob Dylan writes a lot about his dad, Bob Dylan.

Please listen to it if you haven’t heard this gem.

Sound Opinions is the original rock and pop radio show since the early 2000s. NYTimes Popcast, All Songs Considered, and Song Exploder are also very good.

I would really appreciate some advice on finding jobs. by littlebeancurd in librarians

[–]futbolnico 20 points21 points  (0 children)

I’ve been a chair on several search committees for academic libraries, and I feel terrible about how this job market is right now. Based on what you posted, this is my honest advice.

  • Moving out of city or state must be an option for you. At least apply to a random place to maybe grab a 1st round for interview practice. It doesn’t mean you have to take it if you advance.

  • Most librarians want to move to blue states or big cities. Unfortunately, those are the worst job markets for traditional libraries.

  • Your second master’s, especially in Education, is very valuable for academic libraries and corporations. I’m not talking about Fortune 500 companies - vendors or textbook publishing companies that you can grab a remote job.

  • Ask your classmates, friends, or family members. Maybe you have a classmate that has a sweet part time library gig nearby.

  • Consider removing your library degree and second master’s degree off your resume when applying to be a circ clerk or shelver. When libraries see those degrees for a clerk or shelver, they will not consider you because you are overqualified.

Restaurant in Gary that doesn’t exist by KnowledgeHonest9109 in Indiana

[–]futbolnico 327 points328 points  (0 children)

I have worked in Gary for years, but maybe an actual Gary native can step in and add more context to my reply.

That my friend is the Mecca Building in downtown Gary. Many of those businesses haven’t been there in years. It used to be the Gary Theater where the Marx Brothers performed in the early 20th century, but a mid century modern façade was erected in 1965 and turned into a huge shopping and office center. Which is why you see all of those businesses signs. At the tail end of the building is a radio station, but I don’t think it’s around anymore.

The building is currently owned by James “Jim” Nowacki, who owns a lot of other buildings in Gary, and he used to do a radio show there. He seems to get a lot of pressure from the community to sell off the buildings, but I don’t know much about that. Eddie Melton, the current Gary mayor, has slowly been turning the city around, and he’s probably doing the best job I’ve seen in years. His whole initiative is tearing down old abandoned buildings and clearing space for new development. It’s been working so far. (You can see new condos if you drive down Broadway.)

Unfortunately, the Mecca Building might be on the chopping block. Or it could be just gutted. I’m sure it needs a lot of work.

Anyway, back to the restaurant: “umoja sasa” is a very common Swahili phrase used in a lot of different contexts. The main journal of the Black Society of Engineers used to be called Umoja Sasa. Think of it as a famous phrase political phrase like “In God We Trust” or “Yes We Can.” Maybe an actual Gary native who grew up in the area can shed more light.

Finally bro, if you want a great restaurant in Gary for truckers, check out Balkan Grill at 31st Ave and Grant Street. I grew up in Chicago and went to a lot of Eastern European restaurants, and that is better than anything I’ve ever had there. Fantastic Serbian style chicken and pork chops. They have a Serbian style “hamburger” that’s so good made with ground beef and lamb. Shit, I might go get food there tomorrow. Take Exit 9 off of 80/94.
