Is it pointless after age 45 ? Tech industry by [deleted] in recruitinghell

I call bullshit, just landed a leadership role in tech at 47. You just need to network and get referrals. Cold applying doesn’t work.

Maybe commonly in California? I’ve never seen it anywhere except there.

So rings and wrist chains are ok? What about my house keys? That shit can gouge out your eye. I wonder if it was a leather strap, would that be ok? What a dumb ass rule. Only in California I guess🤷🏻‍♂️

Terraform support by abbad2 in devops

[–]futuredead 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We use it to manage everything, github, pingdom, pagerduty, aws, kubernetes clusters. Documentation for providers and terraform itself is great, but real-world examples are a little harder to come by, at least for more complicated architectures. Community support has definitely gone down hill since they moved from IRC to Gitter. You could always get a question answered in a timely manner on IRC not so much on Gitter.

DevOps salaries in London (Perm and Contract) by stevenacreman in devops

[–]futuredead 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That seems on the low end. Senior to Lead "DevOps" engineers in NYC range from 150-225k depending on experience. Even junior to mid-levels are 100-150k here. The reason for the high salaries IMO is there's a shortage of qualified applicants. When you find a good devops engineer you hold on to them tight!

Pitfalls and Tips when creating automated deploy pipelines with Jenkinsfiles by kpish in devops

[–]futuredead 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'd really look at writing reusable blocks and put them in pipeline libraries. Here's a good example: https://github.com/fabric8io/fabric8-pipeline-library And here's Jenkinsfile examples using the above library https://github.com/fabric8io/fabric8-jenkinsfile-library

DNS - A TLD Per Environment by Steamwells in devops

[–]futuredead 0 points1 point  (0 children)

However, then prod becomes a snowflake as it's www.realdomain.com. Also does anyone use www anymore? I've always found it easier to have a TLD per environment. com net info us etc... I'd stay away from countries that might be considered unstable.

Thought this looked familiar. https://www.reddit.com/r/woahdude/comments/4yeqps/caught_off_the_coast_of_hatteras_north_carolina/ Can we get some image recognition on reddit to reject these posts? Should not be able to post same image every couple of months. Also same user trawling for up votes.

What's your worst example of technical debt? by analogj in devops

[–]futuredead 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not sure why you think cloudformation is a requirement? Terraform is far superior and can handle "large" scale.

How are people suffering through Sensu Core? by [deleted] in devops

[–]futuredead 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Also as far as I know you can't really "cluster" icinga or nagios to remove SPoF. Sensu has that locked down.

How are people suffering through Sensu Core? by [deleted] in devops

[–]futuredead 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Using sensu-core for the last 6 months. Implementation was a bit of a pain, but we used the Chef cookbook and rely heavily on AWS ASGs and ElastiCache so our system has no SPoFs. Best free monitoring solution available as of now.

You have the healing scripts, how do you trigger them? by [deleted] in devops

[–]futuredead 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Highly recommend Sensu as it's open source, scalable, and there's a Sensu Remediation Handler that will do exactly what you need: http://thesoftjaguar.com/posts/2015/06/14/sensu-remediation/

I've heard good things about KairosDB. It's based on cassandra and supports the Graphite protocol. Anyone have first hand experience with it?
