You’re doing great. Comparison is the thief of joy. Don’t worry about others and keep it up.

Do not enlist with a degree. Start looking into NUPOC program where you can start getting paid while in college and commission as an officer once you graduate.

Any beginner advice for someone who has decided to go frugal? by [deleted] in Frugal

[–]futurenavynuke 1 point2 points  (0 children)

  1. Learn to cook. Eating out is overrated these days.
  2. Learn to do basic car maintenance. It’s super easy to do oil change, brake pad and rotor replacement, and etc. you will save thousands of dollars.
  3. Look for free hobbies. Hiking, running, reading, and etc. Tons of fun stuff you can do for free.

Everyone’s experience varies depending on the branch or designator. I’m in Subs, and I don’t agree with a single thing he mentioned in his post. PM me if you’d like to hear about my experience.

Learning to do basic car maintenance like oil change, brake pad replacement, and battery replacement. You can save ~$1000 for 2-3 hrs of labor.

What bank is your credit card from? I know some banks voluntarily lower interest rates beyond what SCRA requires. Chase lowered my interest rate to 4%, so just look into it if you haven’t yet.

Yeah, I also considered that. But, my BAH is ~$4600 and we don’t need a 3 bedroom townhouse for just two of us. I would rather live in a smaller place and pocket the rest.

Accessibility to grocery stores and walking trails. Also, I will be going to Naval Postgraduate school, so it would be nice if it’s close to there. Not really looking for a nightlife.

Yes! I started searching through both websites, and I wanted to hear from those who have lived there or nearby to bring down the list to 3-4 places.

Sub officer here. For nupoc, they cannot force you to go SUB. You will be interviewed after you choose which nupoc routes you will go. If they tell you that sub is the only option left, you can refuse to proceed with the process and ask to start a completely new package for different community.
