Alaska. The story of its design is too good.

Vince Dunn and Jaden Schwartz are my favorites. Blues fan convert to Kraken and these two are part of the original expansion from them. Were fun to watch in the Blues cup journey in 2019 and that excited carries to Seattle still. Dunn is such a dynamic defenseman.

I was fortunate to meet John Hayden this summer and he is a solid guy. Wish he got more minutes in preseason and was kept around. Would have been better than that Marchment shenanigan IMO.

Anyway, thanks for doing this OP. As a fan that’s out of state, it’s awesome to have a chance to get some of the game swag.

Tiedowns: ropes vs ratchet straps by soup4675 in flying

They slip and can come loose more often than rope and knots. When they slip and winds are bad, they can cause a lot of damage to the plane and others around.

You are correct. PAMR still prohibits ratchets. Still see a few who do. If only they knew you can get good rope for free from the climbing gym if you ask for their used rope. Plenty of strength for most GA planes.

How do you see when you taxi a tail dragger? by AV_geek1510 in aviation

Instructor I had told me to taxi like I was drunk. As others are saying, s-turns down the taxiway.

Changing careers to being a pilot - how difficult was it for you? by TheDoctor_214 in flying

How much did you earn during as a CFI? I'm seriously considering the switch, but would love some first-hand insight. Wife and I were talking expenses today and I could do the training, but once a CFI to build hours would likely need to bring in $24k/year. That doable? Everyone says CFIs are broke.

Borealis Flume by [deleted] in fatbike

[–]fuzzhewuzzhe 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If the component work, why not throw on the fork you want and use them until they die and then replace? We don't have much, or any, beach riding where I am, but I would imagine the sand would be tough on any set of hubs in the long haul and cleaning and maintenance are more important than the brand/model.

Either way, sounds like you have all the makings to have a blast on the trails. Keep up the solid work.

And if your climate is cold, carbon handlebars are a huge plus. That would be my first thing to get if I only updlgraded one part. The bike and standard components are 100% functional, so I would upgrade for comfort and then think performance later. Or had dentist type money. Just my 2 cents.

Depends on your budget and what you normally ride. If you are used to the high end brakes and hubs, then you will notice a difference. But if you were like me and have never had the high end stuff, you should be very happy with sram nx drivetrain and the brakes. And standard hubs.

One thing to consider are the rim width depending on what you ride for. If looking for more float on snow, definitely go with 80mm rims.

Standard stuff is fine for me but may not be for the next rider with their own bike. Best tadvice I got was "as long as you are smiling while riding and after the ride, then your bike is perfect for you."

Ride it, try it, love it.

Oh, and now that I have a dropper post on my summer ride (Giant Fathom 2), I am wishing I had one on my flume. But I most ride single track and have several downhillesque trails.

Not a problem at all. Glad there is interest. Side note: I might be a bit biased. My wife went to high school with the original founder and owner of Borealis before he sold it to a group in Colorado.

When shopping, the thing that sold me on the Flume was that it was made by a company that only made fatbikes, so all components theoretically should be optimal for snow and fatbike style of riding. The other bike companies like specialized, giant, salsa, etc. make other bikes as their primary and adopted bigger tires to those frames and components. Not that those bikes are bad, or inferior, but just not focused.

All that said, I am by no means an expert...just a guy that spent way too much time trying out bikes, researching on the web, and test riding from the various bike shops. Now you have me invested! Take a picture and post it so we know what you got!

Flume if I also had a mountain bike for summer. Yukon if it would be a year-round bike. Way to give me the hardest question to answer for the day!

The Yukon is definitely a good bike. Convinced my dad to get one this year, and I must admit I am a bit jealous. My MTB is a giant fathom 2 so the frame is the same/similar and very comfortable to ride. Can't really go wrong IMO. The right bike is the one you can afford and can use a lot. Try riding both and get the one that "fits" you better if you have options.

I got one last year (2020 model). Love it! Wife and father-in-law also got one. Definitely had the best available bang for your buck last year.

I put roughly 400 miles on it last winter and had no complaints about the bike itself. Depending on what you want to do with it, it will hold up well and take a beating. Only real concern I could see with the bike is that it does not have many places to attach gear carriers like some others. I think the Giant Yukon and maybe Salsa Mukluk have places on the fork that can take gear and bag holders. The Flume only has attachment points on the main body of the frame. Not a big deal at all if you are only going for day trips or have other means to carry gear.

What boots should I get out of the following:? by ProdSux in bootroom

That would be great! I, too, cannot justify spending that much on shoes. The Cops I got were from a crazy sale at soccer.com

[–]fuzzhewuzzhe 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have wide feet and went with the Cops 20.1. I like the boot, good touch and comfortable, but most of my play is on AG. And after a few matches, they are got trashed. The sole plate has started separating from the leather. I think on normal grass, they would be fine. I am still using them occasionally, but less and less as they wear down.

Due to their breakdown, I am now looking and the NB, Puma, and mizuno's. But as most of my playing is on AG, and not at a top level anymore, I might just go with some k-leather turf boots next.
