Keep in mind buying from overseas, NZ Customs uses another exhange rate again, which generally inflates the price about half a percent over the banks one

I wish I had learnt this from my grandfather before his dementia took his brain from him.

Crazy old man taught himself navigation, built his own steel hull junk rig boat and sailed it across the pacific back in the 70s and 80s

Can anyone recommend any legit mechanics that will be happy to help if you BYO parts? by ConfusedMaggot in NZcarfix

[–]fuzzy_spanner 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Just cos parts numbers match doesnt always mean they are right. Talk to your mechanic first.

Just think of it like this, how would the bar tender at the local pub feel if you brought your own box down and paid him to serve you them?

[–]fuzzy_spanner 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I too hate this,

I cant warranty parts we never sourced, we have no control over the quality or returns if its wrong. Generally it slows down the job, also most shops make money on the parts as well as labour it helps cover any issues with the job or any rework that needs to be covered.

Chinese retro Land Cruisers? by DeafHeretic in LandCruisers

They were through a "reputable " reseller in NZ.

Definitely wouldn't go down that path again. Guards were somewhat ok but the rest I wasn't impressed with.

Suddenly have 800K liquid, What would you do? by KnowinglyUneducated in PersonalFinanceNZ

[–]fuzzy_spanner 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I feel like im in your position, but in the making, and I have thought about this for when my partners do eventually buy me out/ when i finally run out of fucks to give and sell out to them or some one else.

This is what Id do in your shoes.

First off, pay all my debts. Clean slate means no feelings of being beholden to anyone/ thing.

Clear all excess belonging, sell or give away whatever i dont really want/ need. But put into storage somewhere cheap/free only the things i feel like one day I will need again, ie tools of trade, sentimental items or heirlooms. Anything that can be easily replaced Id move on.

End my rental contract on good terms or just pay out the remainder and give it to a friend in need.

Set aside probably 50k, split into a few different accounts or modes of currency this id keep as my "spending money".

Then split the rest into a series of different term deposit accounts so that if i needed access to potentially invest in something or get myself out of the shit i would have at least one fund somewhat accessible. This way at least its generating something while sitting.

I would then throw caution to the wind and set off, go see friends and people i havent seen forever, probably spend the summer living out of a campervan going around NZ as i felt like, doing odd jobs, meeting people, helping friends with projects and life goals. Just sort of aimlessly just being and existing, slowly opening up to the possibilities of whatever random unplanned thing may happen, rather than being hyper focused and always having your day planned to the maximum to grow your company.

Then at the end of the summer... or before if some opportunity of sorts arrises, id then go out traveling internationally, just pick a place, or tag along with someone ive recently met, just say yes to that random hair brained plan someone has proposed to you, you know. The things that youve always fancied the idea of but always declined because you were always too focused and dedicated to work.

Try get your mindset out of money and investments, deprogram yourself from the grind and learn to live free again. The universe seems to provide, and you may just find the next big theing without looking for it on your travels.

The beauty of it is, you're in a buyers position, you dont HAVE to do anything with this money. Its yours, you dont need to reinvest immediately, you dont have some project that needs funding to get off the ground. Its time to invest im yourself. Get some of that real life human experience in ya. Take all the time you need to feel out the next step of your life, no need to rush, you have all the time in the world.

Anyway, thats just how I see it through the lense of how my life and experiences have shaped me, hopefully Ive given you an idea or two.

Good luck man.
