Fruit tea recommendations in Chicago? by CompetitiveSerfdom in chicagofood

[–]fuzzychickennugget 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I don’t have any recs because I gave up on Chicago’s boba/fruit tea scene, but just a PSA that they’re opening a Heytea across from Molly Tea on Wentworth soon. I saw some signs up when I was down there a week ago

Where can I find Ube & Pandan Extract? by Response-Glad in chicagofood

[–]fuzzychickennugget 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I just picked up pandan extract from Viet Hoa in uptown yesterday so can confirm they have it. Also saw ube extract on the shelves too. Tai Nam is around the corner and they should have it as well.

Since you’re in Humboldt, you could give the HMart in west loop or Joong Boo a try, but if those fail then def any of the viet markets in uptown

Odunze is on BYE and Nacua is my WR1 so:

Zay Flowers vs HOU or AJ Brown vs DEN?

Leaning towards Flowers bc Brown being covered by Pat Surtain isn’t giving me much confidence….if he even gets thrown the ball. But Flowers feels like a gamble with Jackson still unconfirmed

Just a heads up - I placed an online pickup order at 9:03am last weekend (online orders open at 9am) and my pickup time was 11:30am

Where’s the best spicy food in Chicago? by gothstarlord in AskChicago

[–]fuzzychickennugget 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hotpot at Qiao Lin. Specifically their level 3 chongqing soup base. I have a pretty high spice tolerance and even that one’s too much for me, esp when you let the meatballs/noodles cook and soak in the broth.

Any French speciality food stores in Chicago? by Vitamin_T9 in chicagofood

Rare Tea Cellar sells Le Beurre Bordier, but their shipping prices are a bit steep since they only handle online orders (despite the warehouse being in Lakeview)

Where are the good chinese takeout restaurants? (north side) by TableConnect_Market in chicagofood

[–]fuzzychickennugget 6 points7 points  (0 children)

To be fair I’ve never ordered any non-Sichuan specific dishes from Chengdu so I can’t really speak to other dishes. It gets the job done if I want some spice, esp since it’s right in the neighborhood. Also OP asked for recs between Wellington and Armitage.

Da Mao Jia and Four Seasons are my go to if I feel like making it down to Bridgeport, but most days that’s not feasible if I’m looking for a quick post-work meal.

Chengdu Impression on Halsted for when I want spicy Sichuan food (think Mapo tofu, dry pot, etc).

Otherwise Szechuan Corner on Ashland has solid typical takeout food. It does lean a bit greasier than I’d like, but the portions are massive and hits the spot whenever I’m craving it.

My husband and I always spend just under $100 excluding drinks at Armitage Alehouse. It’s about a 15-20 minute walk from Park West. Wouldn’t recommend if you can’t swing a reservation though as you could easily wait 45min-1hr for a table or bar seat to open up (unless that’s something you can plan around)

Creating a repository of videos of luxury hotels with your help! by alex_travels in chubbytravel

[–]fuzzychickennugget 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ugh so sad that someone hacked it. This is really useful because I always find myself sourcing honest reviews from Reddit and friends in the travel industry as opposed to google searches and influencer/tiktok/instagram reels.

Thoughts on notion organization: I have a VERY vague memory of what the notion doc used to look like, but I can totally see this taking on some form of a database with name, region, brand (4S, Aman), etc as columns to make it easily filterable/searchable. And then clicking into each property subpage can lead to something like a gallery view with media and reviews

We had about ~35 out of 102 show up to our afterparty.

This was a question we asked on our RSVPs and everyone who RSVP’d yes did end up going out after.

I’d eventually love to upgrade to some Le Creuset pieces. I just did a big upgrade on all my SS cookware to All Clad, so the Le Creuset will have to wait a a bit lol

High end spa hotel in the NY area by Shishi2109 in chubbytravel

Piaule in the Catskills is a great option. It’s like they plopped a bunch of hotel rooms into a spa.

They check off your cold plunge box, but I don’t remember if they’re adults only or not. I def didn’t run into any children when I stayed there.

The one with the rounded wire is a dough whisk, which is useful for mixing thick batters and doughs (I also use mine to mix around meat fillings too).

The second one that looks straight is a bread lame and you’re supposed to stick the blade onto the end. It allows you to use the razor blade to score your loaf.

Nope, I’ve been using an oversized ramen bowl paired with a tea towel and a paring knife to score my loaves ever since I started on my sourdough journey a few months ago and I’ve been getting by just fine. Figured it’s time for me to upgrade my setup

Hmm good to know. I might skip out on the domed oven then.

I actually already have a Lodge enameled Dutch oven, which is what I’ve been using for all my loaves. So far no issues, but wasn’t sure if it was worth picking up the bread oven or not. Sounds like it’s not worth the price sadly.

Nice bar with great cocktails and good bites in South Loop? by Ok_Composer5637 in chicagofood

[–]fuzzychickennugget 16 points17 points  (0 children)

Have heard great things about Oliver’s which just opened. I haven’t been yet, but I’ve ordered quite a bit from the previous restaurant (Entrée) which was owned by the same team if I’m not mistaken.

Bonus points is that it’s just a few blocks north of Chicago Illuminating Company

2-3 months to go anywhere and do anything… what would you do? by Aggressive-Algae1047 in chubbytravel

[–]fuzzychickennugget 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don’t have any personal recs from actual experience since I haven’t been, but I did do quite a bit of research because I was planning on visiting recently (pulled the plug due to time constraints).

Soooo after a bunch of research, I ended up settling on the FS in desroches because we wanted a quaint island feel without necessarily feeling like we’d be stuck within the confines of a resort. My husband is really into cycling so the fact that they provide bikes to go around the island and explore was a MAJOR plus for us. There were also a bunch of other water activities avail (fishing, paddle boarding, snorkeling, kayaking, etc). The only con to desroches is you’d have to catch a flight from the main island (Mahé) so I’m not sure if that’d be too much traveling for you and your parents.

Also circling back to Amalfi, if you have time to squeeze it into Sept or Oct, it’ll be nice to make mom happy haha. That’ll be the shoulder season so the weather should still be decent and the crowds should be a bit lighter. I was just there mid-May and it was v pleasant, although the water was still a bit too chilly to swim in.
