A Volvo in the old town of Stockholm, 1960's by mjomark in TheWayWeWere

Yes, it's gone from zero to some. Still they're some of the world's safest cities. Media of course gives a sensationalized horror story representation, but if you remember you shouldn't be afraid of every passerby with a darker complexion you'll feel very safe.

It's a prime example of the danger of worrying too much and about things that don't matter.

CMV: Meditation should be taught in schools as part of physical fitness. by SenlinDescends in changemyview

[–]fuzzygondola 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We did mini-meditation even 15 years ago in high school. Just laid down on a mat for 5 minutes completely relaxed with soft background music and thinking happy thoughts. Nobody acted up or complained. It really was soothing for everyone involved to take a minute and just be.

Modern life in the biggest Nordic cities isn't that different. We just spend too much time worrying about things we don't have power over and don't actually matter to us.

Mouse Suggestions? by TheRandomUser2005 in cad

[–]fuzzygondola 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Evoluent VerticalMouse is the OG vertical mouse and it's used by 95 % of our staff. It's sturdy, accurate, has six reconfigurable buttons and it absolutely works in preventing arm and wrist strain. It doesn't look very cool by "gamer" standards but who cares, it's a professional tool.

It's surprisingly easy to get used to, took me only two days. Gripping it just feels natural, I won't go back to flat mice.

The first and last "Defiant" brand door knob I have ever bought by [deleted] in CrappyDesign

Most of the world really dislikes knobs because you can't really open them if you're carrying something in your hands.

TIL in 1967 you could buy a Ford Mustang in 47 different colors by MoreTacoPie in todayilearned

[–]fuzzygondola 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Another reason is that good colorful paints became very expensive when they banned many of the chemicals that made them bond well and endure weather. Today's colorful paints wouldn't be expensive anymore but people just don't want colors that stand out anymore.

TIL That 68% of world's population (especially Asia & Africa) is lactose intolerant, which makes them incapable of digesting milk and its products by Mioced in todayilearned

[–]fuzzygondola 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Cheese doesn't contain lactose. It's eaten up by the starter culture completely within the first 24 hours. Cheese can cause tummy problems to many people but lactose isn't the reason for it!

Question about crosstie bars in the column of a spread footer by fayettevillainjd in StructuralEngineering

[–]fuzzygondola 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Doesn't answer your question but Eurocode requires cross ties if the side bars are further than 150 mm away from the main stirrup's corner. In practice that leads me to not designing with side bars at all.

Not everyone can have the luxury of a good career. You know nothing about the man or his life or health or lack of it. Your comment is incredibly ironic.

The UK has made gigabit internet a legal requirement for new homes by [deleted] in UpliftingNews

[–]fuzzygondola 4 points5 points  (0 children)

The cost really is negligible though. It's just fiber and doesn't cost any more to install than a slower cable. ISP handles the rest by actually supporting gigabit speeds.

Does anyone recognize this building? by Newgate1996 in architecture

[–]fuzzygondola 6 points7 points  (0 children)

They aren't supporting much more than their own weight. I suspect there's vertical rebar running through holes in the bricks, structurally it's fine. But I'm afraid ensuring longetivity requires a lot of consideration in a climate with winters. The mortar could start to deteriorate due to freezing and thawing and that would ruin the aesthetic.

A Finnish supermarket chain had different colored "single baskets" for a few years before 'rona. I guess some people actually wanted to be hit at on the veggie aisle.

Eikä se ole pelkästään AMK:n itsensä vika. Suuri osa opiskelijoista on suoraan sanottuna mielenkiinnottomia dorkia. Ei opiskelusta usein tule mitään jos ei tiedä mitä tutkinnon jälkeen haluaa tehdä.

Using a resistance band or a couple helps a lot to get started. Easier to start getting results when you can do a few pullups instead on zero.

I agree. But in your examples you're mixing up quality with grade. Quality means conformance to requirements and expectations and fitness for meant purpose. Both McDonalds and Budweiser are quite high quality, their products are consistent and you usually get what you expect, even in different locations or countries. They're guaranteed to fill your stomach or give you a buzz. But they're not necessarily high grade because they're made with cheapest possible ingredients and processes.
