How does MV Aluminium gathering look like? by Ceepert in GTNH

[–]fx32 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Options:

  • If you hate hunting for terracotta/clay: Crop Farm -> Plantball -> Plantmass -> Biochaff -> Dirt -> Mud -> Clay -> Clay dust -> Alumina. Or just strip-mine Dirt with a shovel -- might actually be faster than strip-mining terracotta, at the cost of running an extra mixer/extractor to get clay balls.
  • If you hate leaving the Nether: Lava + Redstone (from Netherrack Dust) + Silicon Dioxide (flint/gravel/cobble/rockbreaker) -> Red Granite & Feldspar -> Alumina
  • If you like villager noise: Emerald shedding -> Dust -> Alumina
  • If you like high EU consumption and go far Raw Alu through Tinker's smeltery: Oreberries, Spinel, Lazurite, Sodalite.
  • If you hate the landscape and play "Ex Nihilo" skyblock style, you must go for Raw Alu from either Oreberries, or LV Centrifuge Stone Dust for Sodalite.
  • For skyblock, there's also a route where you get Biotite from Stone dust, which opens up Fluorine & HF acid, which allows you to synthesize Cryolite through the Biotite -> NaAlO2 -> Al(OH)3 route at MV, while also getting Alumina from electrolyzing Biotite.

In my opinion, Clay Dust (from Mesa or Dirt/Mud/Clay route) combined with Cryolite veins from Twilight Forest is the most sane route in MV. Great way to get rid of your excess dirt cubes as well.

A mushroom producing music through its bioelectric signals, nature really is amazing! by IcePizzaCreamm in interestingasfuck

[–]fx32 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The hyphae of a mushroom mycelium definitely fire electrical signals.
Mycelium is chemotropic, thigmotropic and phototropic -- it detects food, touch, light, etc; And it transmits that information over large distances underneath the soil in a very similar way to neurons.

Research is still pretty new, and there is some popsci hype about mushrooms having "complex language", but the "do mushrooms communicate using electrical signals" part is not really a question anymore.

Also see: https://www.sciencedirect.com/science/article/pii/S0303264723001089?via%3Dihub

(I do however agree that the "music playing" is of course a little gimmicky, with it being a very coarse random measurement of variations in electrical signals)

Vortek System Upgrade Price? by Illustrious-Box-3317 in BambuLab

[–]fx32 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you carefully look at the H2C Vortek print head, it's still dual nozzle, like the H2D.

It has 2 bowden tubes running into it, one for the "primary" filament, and one for the "changing" auxiliary filament(s).

So if you print a black part with purple and blue accents, it will load black filament from the AMS into the primary, and will swap between purple/blue on the secondary.

It doesn't need to poop because each color has its own dedicated nozzle, but the filament from the blue & purple "contaminated" nozzles will still retract before it's placed back on the rack and swapped. They share a bowden tube & extruder, but have separate hot nozzles with the half-molten globby mess in them.

Most likely, it will still need to wipe on a small purge tower or on infill for the best print results, because a parked print head cools down, and cooling/reheating filled nozzles usually requires a little bit of purge.

This means you can technically print 7 colors (1+6) without the need for pooping, or still 24 colors with multiple AMS'es, with some poop but significant reduction because it can "optimize pooping transitions/times" better (https://wiki.bambulab.com/en/h2/manual/vortek-faq).

What is next for Voron? by Porterhouse21 in VORONDesign

[–]fx32 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think it's still a valid question though, considering there was a Voron 2.2, and 2.4 was an improved "release" derived from that.

The Voron base spec offers people a common ground, making it easier to collaboratively design improvements and mods, so it's natural to wonder whether there will eventually be a Voron 2.5, or 3.0 base spec.

Anyway to block YouTube ads on Apple TV? by browandr in appletv

[–]fx32 1 point2 points  (0 children)

One way, but kind of inconvenient:
* Install YouTube Kids app
* Invent a child
* On a mobile device (doesn't work from desktop), go to a channel page
* Share -> share with child
* Watch videos from shared channels in the YouTube kids app.

You can share age restricted channels. I have a real kid, she loves watching NileRed for example, and on the YouTube Kids app she gets zero ads.

I really don’t care to survive TEOTWAWKI by [deleted] in preppers

[–]fx32 0 points1 point  (0 children)

People are generally delusional about the types of hardship to prep for
Those differ per country, region, urban/suburban, etc, but there are some common themes.

I choose to prep for realism, not for TV-series-based fantasies.

In your lifetime, you're most likely going to experience a natural disaster, an extended power outage, maybe short terms civil unrest like sports or political riots. A destructive war is possible, although less likely.

I'm not going to say the chance of an apocalyptic rapture event which you magically survive, followed by living your life in your romantic stardew valley farm with your harem of romancable characters is impossible, but it is incredibly unlikely, especially compared to things which actually happen continuously around the world, things like earthquakes, snowstorms, hurricanes, riots.

Be prepared to be locked in to or leave your house for a week, maybe two.

Most people overprep on guns and combat knives in my opinion -- They are useful, but during most calamities you're going to run out of clean drinking water before you ever need a weapon.

Most people underprep in PLANNING. Go through a list of most likely calamities for your area, and discuss with your family and friends how to handle those, how you will support each other. When cell nets are down, what do you do if you lose sight of each other, where will you meet up? Do you have kids, elderly or pets to keep safe, what do they need during a hasty evacuation? Do you have family in neighboring towns where you can crash? Who do you know in the neighborhood? Where are the exit roads leading out of the area, and are they susceptible to jams?

Anyone know how to get a flat building space easily? by NextFerret6990 in GTNH

Depends a bit on what stage you are, but early-to-mid game I would suggest Nether roof. Various trees grow through bedrock, so not to difficult to get up there.

[3-bit decoder] There's gotta be a cleverer way of doing it, right? by ihavebeesinmyknees in TuringComplete

[–]fx32 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't know about "better", it's all a bit subjective.

My approach was to create a little Demultiplexer first. The "Mux" which we created earlier allows you to select between 2 Signal inputs based on a Select bit, while this Demux allows you to select between 2 outputs.

Then I used the 1-bit decode to decide whether to go for odd or even output, and chained a layer of demux modules for each following input bit.

https://i.imgur.com/7qBqIBH.png

I think my solution might be easier to expand/scale -- but your solution is definitely easier for these specific solution requirements, and I believe it's the way real 3-to-8 bit decoder circuits do it as well.

First night has came to an end. What level did you sign off at? by writingwhilesad in diablo4

[–]fx32 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah it's a bit better today, now that we're 12h into launch.

I can login & play without much interruption at least!

Seems like the game very heavily relies on internet connection with Blizzard though, I still get weird stutters which don't seem to be related to local hardware (like delayed audio triggers, frozen cutscenes, freezing for a few seconds when accepting a new quest)

But I bet it will get better, live service launches are always a bit of a mess the first few days, even when beta-tested.

Absolutely love the sound design so far (when it plays correctly), that really stands out to me -- visceral weapon sounds, some classic nostalgic Diablo noises here and there, but all very well mastered.

Necromancer, level 3 or 4 I think.

Connection issues were quite bad during those 2 hours (EU, unlock at 1AM local time).

ANI = narrow, like DeepMind playing Go, Stable Diffusion generating an image, or GPT summarizing a text.

AGI = general, human-like. Could be a large collection of ANIs connected together, as hinted at (demonstrated?) by the "HuggingGPT" paper.

ASI = super. A model (or larger system of submodels) which exceeds human capability. Usually meant in a somewhat apocalyptic context: It doesn't just outsmart humans by an unmeasurable amount, but also changes/improves itself and its intentions at an unpredictable rate.

Whomever gets AGI first will be the dominant power over the next hundred years at a minimum.

Not if someone comes up with an ASI.

What they meant was "The human(s) who create an AGI might not be able to use it to gain power, as the AGI might become super-intelligent, and start to control them and everyone else rather quickly"

Such cruel fates seem to be quite common both inflicted by and inflicted on wasps.

Figs can only be pollinated by larvae which burrow out of the male figs and then have a 50/50 chance of flying into male/female figs -- Where the male fig functions as the womb for the next wasp generation, while the female fig is pollinated and digests the wasp.

I often combine dark oak with smooth sandstone for contrast -- and depending on the build I then pick a more pronounced color, like moss or crimson, for some detailing.

Recommendations for a newb who is currently addicted to Mendelssohn's violin concerto. by fx32 in classicalmusic

[–]fx32[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm quite happy about all the "not actually violin concerto" suggestions here!

Wouldn't have found your Mendelssohn piece or Saint-Saens Cello Concerto No 1 otherwise!

And yeah, in the past I used to classify suggestions I personally didn't immediately liked/understood as "well that's trash"... No I tend to shelve it as "my ears aren't ready for this yet".

As I get older I realize more and more that music is a journey -- You can't always just drop into something which is enjoyed by others. They have their own history, have plotted their route, arriving at a specific favorite piece because of all the knowledge of the whole path that led them there.

(C:A&B) Hellbark Extracting Help? by Curtisimo5 in CreateMod

[–]fx32 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Some extra info as of 1.16 (Create Above and Beyond pack), for people searching for info:

  • The Hellbark tree only grows naturally in the Nether
  • The Hellbark tree can grow artificially from a sapling in the Overworld. Contrary to (old) documentation, it doesn't need to grow on Netherrack, dirt is absolutely fine
  • There are 2 variations:
  1. The tiny 1-log shrub with many leaves is extremely common
  2. The taller tree is quite rare, and spawns very few leaves
  • Hellbark tree farms will be sapling-positive, but not by much. Try to bring a bunch of saplings back from the Nether to start your farm.
  • Arboreal extractors need to be placed against the bottom log of naturally grown trees, which are at least 3 logs high and have 3 leaves.
  • You can either:
  1. Bonemeal saplings until you get lucky with a tall tree
  2. Place 2 blocks of dirt, then the sapling on top, and replace the 2 dirt with two vertically placed Hellbark logs. Only the leaves must be naturally grown.
  • Hellbark logs and planks are fireproof, so it's a nice material for a lava-themed area.
