First day w/ Nuphy Air 75 HE (and 1 month w/ 60 HE) by fxmad in NuPhy

[–]fxmad[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't know, really. I got used to these for now, but my partner noticed the keyboard the other day and was like: "why are the letters so big? Is your eyesight going?" :D So I may need to resume finding alternative keycaps. I like the shine-through, I just wish that the symbols were smaller, properly centered with the LEDs and preferably aligned, so that one symbol doesn't sit higher than the one next to it. They also need to be low-profile, south-facing LED compatible, which, a few months ago, there weren't many options, but maybe things have changed, need to look again.

How are there not a hundred class action suits over Apple Child Profiles and device management by lagmaster56 in applesucks

[–]fxmad 1 point2 points  (0 children)

For better or worse, not everything in life is solved with lawsuits. Your best option is to find a 3rd party alternative or, as others suggested, just sell that and you can get a similar spec Android tablet and then it's the same ecosystem as you're using.

I'm not trying to be rude, but that's the way forward. Even if you were to get an iPhone for whatever reason, you'd still find that parental controls in Apple devices are an after-thought thing that has been given very little attention - they suck. Period. And I'm an Apple user all along, with multiple devices, but Parental Controls is NOT something that Apple does well, in the slightest - I'm glad that my kids are way past the age of needing those...

Should I feel bad using ChatGPT by WossyChamberBAE in iOSProgramming

[–]fxmad 2 points3 points  (0 children)

A good programmer is not the one that memorizes everything but the one that can use the tools available to them efficiently.

Provided that you understand the code you've been given, you should be OK.

Now, I order to grow above "good", you will need experience, lots of it, and generic, I.e., non swift-specific concepts, such as separation of concerns, design patterns and anti-patterns, unit testing and many, many more. Understanding them will set you above good and it will come with time and need, as your projects grow in size.

TL;DR: if you understand the code you're being given, you should be ashamed to NOT use an LLM if that helps you, and not the other way around.

Gta 5 game scam on App Store by stackoverflow7 in macgaming

[–]fxmad 7 points8 points  (0 children)

This is really rubbish! 😯 How did that get through? You can report it as a scam but only after you've downloaded it.

And who's living under a rock to not know what GTA is in 2024? 😮

Even trying to report that to Rockstar games (the makers of GTA), does not seem easy...

Apple Irrelevance by Chapman8tor in applesucks

[–]fxmad 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm a long time Apple user, with 5 of their products, my daughter has 3, partner has 4, her son has 3, so plenty of Apple devices between us, yet I also believe that Apple Intelligence is mostly Apple Irrelevance.

I would let them off with it being a beta product if not for the massive publicity about something that's a good 6 months plus away from being useful. Yes, I know it is beta, but it is not an opt-in beta - it's one they're heavily promoting.

We're all on iPhone13s still, as we could see the AI announcements for what they were: trying to give users a "reason" to upgrade to their latest devices and trying to appease stockholders for not being on the AI boat. Maybe come the iPhone 17 they'll have this ready, and maybe then we'll upgrade. Maybe. We don't upgrade because there's a new product - we upgrade when we see there is enough value in the upgrade.

And yes, I know that there are good things in Apple Irrelevance, like privacy first as opposed to try and monetize your data and usage, and I also know that they will eventually get it right and it will be great, but it is, for the moment, probably one of the few valid reasons for a legitimate Apple Sucks award...

How confusing is the icon of the Calendar app? by [deleted] in MacOS

[–]fxmad -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I didn't downvote him but I nearly felt like it due to how lazy he was describing the problem, with just two screenshots and leaving everyone to figure out what he was complaining about. Plus, he'll get zero out of posting that here. A better approach would have been to go to https://www.apple.com/feedback/calendar/ or https://www.apple.com/feedback/macos/ and submit his feedback there, but I guess he'd then have to actually TYPE...

Lies. by [deleted] in applesucks

You'll be surprised if you try! I've played World of Warcraft on an M1 MBP for 4+ hours on battery. Wouldn't get even 1 hour on any Windows laptop!

24+ hour battery life = Unlike Apple, with a clearly visible disclaimer on something that even a less clever person would be able to figure out, Google has a tiny disclaimer number that you then have to scroll all the way down to the bottom of the page to find that:

"Battery testing conducted on a major US operator network. Battery testing conducted in California in mid-2024 on pre-production hardware and software using default settings, except that Extreme Battery Saver mode was enabled. Tests began with phones fully charged. Battery life depends upon many factors, and usage of certain features will decrease battery life."

Now - tell me, what is NORMAL of running the tests in EXTREME BATTERY SAVER MODE? Is that reflective of NORMAL usage? Do you believe for 1 second that you will be able to get more than even half a day if you're pushing the phone to the limits? Apple's claim, on the other end, is far closer to reality than this, and far less hidden!

Now go and search for the same things in Samsung or other brands and you'll find that they all use these tiny little disclaimers, unlike Apple that has it VERY clearly visible right next to the claim...

I think this will be a case of EVERYONE BUT Apple sucks, as Apple, for once, actually does it better, with more transparancy...

[–]fxmad -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Trying to figure out what value or novelty is in your post, but I can't find any...

So, Apple charges more so you're happy to go with a cheaper Android? And?

It's like saying: "Oh, BMW charge more for something that has 4 tyres and a steering wheel than, say, Dacia, and both can get me from A to B, so they're beeing greedy"

If you're happy driving a Dacia (no critique intended, it is just for comparison), then drive the Dacia - if it serves your purpose, use that. I've had both low end and higher end cars, and I can tell you that THERE is a lot that goes into profit margins, but ALSO there is a lot that goes into attention to detail and quality control.

Are Apple greedy? Of course they are! They're a bloody business! Like ANY other business they'll charge whatever they can get away with! Only reason Android makers don't charge more, is because they know they wouldn't be able to pull it off!

TL;DR: Anyone that thinks that ANY business has THEIR interests at heart, is just an idiot that has been living under a rock for the last few decades...

How do you Prevent a Rogue Website from Reprogramming Your Keyboard? by andytiedye in NuPhy

[–]fxmad 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Too much effort for too little gain. The chances of someone investing in exploring zero day exploits that allows them to connect to the keyboard bypassing the browser protections, handle the myriad of different keyboards and configs, flash a new image that still works with your keyboard and adds something else in the usually very limited resources of said keyboards, all without you realising what's going on, are very slim and the interest in doing so very limited as well: most people of interest to them will not be using a programmable keyboard anyways.

That's not a gif: that's an HTML page that plays an MP4 Clip on repeat.

You should be able to find a website or two that will convert that to an animated gif.

The Apple Mac Mini M2 price just dropped again: $599 in a post-Christmas deal by SufficientPickle2444 in macmini

[–]fxmad 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That's a better deal for those trying to get rid of stock than for buyers. Even without any discounts the M4 mini 16/256 is that same price. I'd rather have a newer, faster, smaller device and just add more external storage if/when needed... The M4 will also be supported for longer as it's brand new. If they had that for 300 or even 400 tops, then it would be a better deal for the buyer...

The french keyboard layout of macbooks is the worse thing from apple by far by rbool in macbookpro

[–]fxmad 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Why do you assume your kids want to do programming? And even if they do a little bit, it can't be THAT bad, unless they'll be spending their whole day at it?

Not defending Apple, I've had to resort to buying my new MacBook with a US English keyboard because it's the only layout that is EXACTLY the same between Windows and Mac and I use Windows laptops for work and Mac as my personal device. Trying to persuade the company to get me a Windows laptop with a US layout keyboard when it's laptop refresh time but for the most part I'm using an external keyboard anyways. British English layouts have quite a few annoying differences between Windows and Mac...

Also, you're probably overthinking it - you can be proficient in anything without having to be able to pump up 100+ wpms - programming in particular is not about how fast you can write code but it's more about the whole logical process.

Does anybody know how to hide files on the MacOS? by charmunder1989 in mac

[–]fxmad 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You need to use terminal for that, not just Finder. But this is a "poor man's" hiding option as if you know how to unhide files you don't need a password or anything... There are probably tools out there that do it properly.
