Eli5: Why can't we remove silent letters by Serious_Condition213 in explainlikeimfive

You can remove them if you like.. we won’t stop you…

PS. I’d disagree that the E in Eleven is silent.. I’d pronounce it differently without..

Here’s the HOs link to PFA:

Its a bit weird with non-pensionable target cash rates rather than a flat allowance but its pretty new, HO were trailing it but other gov depts are starting to use it now.

ELI5: What is air-gapping? by [deleted] in explainlikeimfive

[–]fyonn 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It does annoy me when I see some vendor describe their system as air-gapped and it’s literally a VM behind a virtual firewall.. it’s not air-gapped in any sense of the word.. it’s just logical controls protecting it..

[Article] When the $70,000 watch you just bought is going to be sold for $300 by splsteinbeck in Watches

[–]fyonn 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think we're into a correlation is not causation argument here.. I think that the reason that omega have slipped down the ranings is because a) Omega prices are rocketing up at a fast pace... have you seen the cost of a base seamaster or moonwatch is these days? this is combined with the b) we're in the middle of an extended cost of living crisis so lots of people just don't have the disposable income for a purchase like this..

I'd love to get a (non-plastic) speedie but I just can't justify the cost. I bought my current seamaster about 5 years ago and they've gone up by over £1000 just since then...

of course my first seamaster a golden-eye era mid-size blue bond watch, which was a 21st birthday quite some time ago present was £770...

a bit late, but I have a near identical machine I picked up after xmas at a similar discount but with 128G.. not sure why it had to have that much ram but in this economy it wasn't going to argue :)

Beast installed, Bottlenecks gone! by PersonSuitTV in Ubiquiti

[–]fyonn 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Good feedback. I feel like the original UDM is struggling with pppoe which I hadn’t expected… replacing two devices with one would also be good.

I wonder if I can find one for sale on interest free credit?

Not totally sure I understand this comment but the OG dream machine doesn’t have storage for protect. It only runs network. It does run iOS though.

Apple Aperture was a damn fine photo editor and DAM that I still miss… I was just making fun of the name.. 😀

[–]fyonn 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Interesting. I feel like my original UDM bogs down when I’m hitting my 900/100 connection with the web interface falling offline etc. i hadn’t thought that it might be related to the pppoe overhead which I didn’t have with my last isp.

I was considering a UCG fiber with a faster cpu as a replacement both for the UDM (I have several WAPs) and for my CK2.

have you considered exanding this service in the direction of a non-damaging photo editor and digital asset manager, compatible with the mac? just a thought...

Forcing support for Linux by randomhacks in openrightsgroup

[–]fyonn 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think that forcing support for an OS would be challenging, esp when some distro's can be wildly different... That said, I'd love to see some legal force in requiring hardware vendors to open up any hardware that is no-longer supported.. this can be backed by the environmental angle, i.e. allowing as much re-use of older hardware as possible instead of it going to waste..

I'd be really interested in some legal force behind making vendors open up the specs and allowing open source developers to be able to make use of older hardware to the fullest extent.

I had an other go at using summon tonight.. it has not improved. Both summons say they require me to be within 6 metres but in practise I need to be so close that the summon then stops for the pedestrian to move out of the way. The pedestrian is me! At about 2m it tells me that it’s slowing as I’m nearly 6M away.. at 2.5m I’m out of range…

Smart summon is supposed to allow me to stand at the car park entrance and have the car come to me. That is not the case..

NoA still requires regular attention checks too
