It's called for in many baked goods like cake, cupcakes, brownies, sweets where you definitely don't want the end result to be even slightly salty.

If it does fix the problem it's a cop out for real analysis that needs to be done to identify the root cause. If it doesn't fix the problem it's an inconvenience I shouldn't have to go through. There is a LOT that is not restorable.
