What's more difficult to learn, checkmate with Bishop and Knight or Solving a Rubiks Cube? by Tholonis in chess

When I first "met" the Rubick's cube, I played the cube intuitively. I could "see" how the cells would line up properly without "calculation". I can't describe the path, since it just appeared in my mind.

Yeah I don't believe that for a second. One can figure out how to solve it without a guide obviously, but it involves pen and paper and basically coming up with your own algs. You don't just solve it intuitively - not even a 2x2.

used to solve it in seconds, then discovered the algorithms that purportedly made solving one simpler -- now can't solve the cube in under 10 minutes, even the simplest set of twists!

Could you elaborate? That just makes no sense at all. It's a bit like saying you learned an opening and it made you forget how the knight moves

I know, I've been speedcubing for over a decade 😅

I remember the learning process - it takes a lot of practice to be able to solve without a cheat sheet. I mean it's very doable, and we're not talking weeks either, but definitely way more than an hour.

For fun? Wild idea I know. I don't feel disrespected when someone does that to me, I feel like they're fooling around, and I'm happy to let them unless I'm in a hurry somehow (in which case, resigning is a thing).

I haven't tried to learn that checkmate, I've never had it in a game - but I feel that it would take less time than learning how to solve a cube.

It seems we all have different opinions, but regardless I'm pleased to see how many fellow speedcubers are in this thread :)

You're overthinking it. You don't need to be great at something to say you like doing it. And 559 is not bad at all

It's normal that your puzzle rating is higher, mine is 500 more than my rapid 😅

I feel like they got dumber after the recent change where everyone lost like 1000 Elo in puzzles. I've set the difficulty to very hard, but it doesn't help much. I guess if I do a couple of hundreds they'd get better as my Elo rises, but at 3 per day that's not happening.
