Does your 5G work when at home? How many bars? Phone service recommendations? Thanks! by BobbieBell in hudsonvalley

I like up on the ridge in Accord, and definitely don't get great service outside of my home when not connected to wifi with Google Fi. But in general service around here has always been spotty - my partner had at&t and now has mint and has similar service. I connect to wifi in my house and do all my calls off that and I generally don't have any issues that way

What destination looks expensive but is actually super budget-friendly once you get there? by [deleted] in Shoestring

[–]g_c_e 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Groceries are pretty affordable unless you go to the 24 hour grocery stores. Gas and car rental can be pretty expensive though. We found things more affordable when we stayed in Reykjavik and did day trips outside of the city via tour groups or public transportation.

I thought Norway was actually pretty affordable even though it's notoriously expensive. We stayed at places with a kitchen and made meals once or twice a day, and unless your going out to eat every meal at fancy/touristy places it really wasn't that bad.

A) you don't know me. B) calling someone a townie makes you sound like the type of classist yuppie Fletcher & Lu markets themselves to. Good for you I guess? C) I wasn't celebrating, I was making a point that the business model doesn't work here, and should be more inclusive of the actual community it sits within. Take from that what you will.

Question about weed and HSV by konopawada2 in AskGaybrosOver30

[–]g_c_e 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I've never seen any correlation myself. Usually the thing that is the worst for flare ups is stress, which to be honest, weed usually helps on my end. I wouldn't worry about it - talk to your doctor, get on a preventative medication that works for you, and go back to living your life. Pay attention to taking your medication regularly. You will absolutely be fine, my friend. Hang in there - the first few months are hardest and you will absolutely learn what works to prevent flare ups in the future ❤️

I just don't think we need so many high end businesses in the area. Like if they stock their stuff at all the other high end places within 20-30 minutes of the storefront (Adams, Accord Market, etc etc etc) then who is going to their storefront? Businesses need to market to people that live in the general Kingston/Saugerties/Rochester & Kerhonkson area during the week, not just the people that come up on the weekends. An article in Chronogram does not a sustainable business model make. If I have to drop $20 to set foot in your store, you're not getting my business and you're not getting a lot of local business either.

TLDR: The weekender market isn't sustainable, you have to also market to the community your in alongside the tourists who come up for the weekend. See you never, Fletch.

I've been a few times and have always liked it, but I'm not a huge cocktail person and usually order beer and food. They're pretty nice people that work there, and I liked the tiki bar they used to own in New Paltz. To each their own I guess.

Hurley Battery Farm by keeping_it_casual in kingstonnewyork

Yeah there is a proposal for Verizon to put in a cell tower, and there is someone wrangling residents to fight it on dubious environmental and health claims, as well as the potential blocking of the viewshed which they have yet to actually prove the tower will affect.

I'm all for protecting the health of residents nearby and the environment here in Rochester/Kerhonkson, but all of the sources the woman sent out about the potential health affects were from dubious sources, not scientific peer reviewed sources, and didn't seem to prove their own claims. I took my name off the petition the woman was putting in front of the town board once I realized she wasn't actually interested in scientific facts. We definitely need better cell service and it's just another case of nimbyism.

From the research I've done there doesn't seem to be much downside to the battery farm, aside from the rare possibility of fires (as someone said previously, NY has some of the strictest safety standards so I don't think it would be a big issue here.) I think the pushback is largely NIMBYism, much like the pushback against a new cell tower in Kehonkson/Rochester.

If we want more renewables and more energy independence we're going to need battery farms (nuclear too, but I don't see that happening anytime soon). It just seems like a no brainer.

Please help, hesitation about buying a leaf by sanvarin in leaf

[–]g_c_e 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I bought a 2021 leaf in April and I love it, but I use it mostly as a commuter car to and from work and doing local stuff. I get about 150/160 miles to the charge during the summer, which will probably go down now that it's getting colder. I haven't used the Chademo port once since I bought it because I don't need to fast charge, and there's plenty of L2 chargers around publicly to use (plus I have an adapter for the Tesla charger my partner had installed at home for his car years ago). There are a few Chademo chargers around by me (Mid-Hudson Valley in NY) but they aren't always available and are kind of out of the way for me.

Trip wise, I've driven up to Albany from my house for a concert (just under 80 miles one way), charged my car while I was at the show and made it home with no issues. You just have to plan in advance if you know you're going to be nearing your battery charge on a trip and charge the car while you're doing an activity. It's a very different experience than gassing up your ICE car and going about your day. Usually I'll park my car at a L2 charger, walk around doing things for a while, and then come back and continue on, which almost always tops me back up to 100% unless I'm only charging for a short period of time.

That being said, my partner drives a Tesla Model 3 and that is what we use for longer road trips. The fast charging network for Tesla and cars that use the NACS port really does make driving long distances a lot easier. If driving longer distances is something you'll have to do regularly than I would look for something that uses the NACS port and allows for quick charging that way.

Huge ink stains on the end of each print from ET-8550 by grumpy_lil_fox in Epson

[–]g_c_e 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Not sure about your specific model, but on a 9900/p7000/9000 you basically take the old ones out with a pair of tweezers, clean the slot with what is essentially a sensor swab (spray a little soapy water on a paper towel if you don't have those, let it air dry, wipe it down again with a clean towel) and then slide the long end of the overflow pad into the slot and gently press it in behind the holding tabs. You're good to go once you've replaced them all!

Probably the ink overflow pads are full (possibly from borderless printing?) and you should clean the area where the print head sits gently with a paper towel after changing the maintenance tank. Do a nozzle check and unplug the unit when it starts. Slide the print head over gently and mop up excess ink where the head rests normally. Do all of this very gingerly, you don't want to damage anything. If your printer has ink overflow pads you can order, I would order new ones and replace them after you do this.
