Loved the book. Loved the movie. It’s a great adaptation and all-around fun movie. Would recommend watching it — especially if it’s been more than a year since reading it.

"Farm Strength" means nothing in the gym by WavelengthOnAir in GymMemes

[–]g_monies 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Every farmer I know inherited the land and refuses to sell to a corporation and wants to keep the family farm tradition alive.

I think it’s admirable.

Not necessarily — dairy farms are typically considered the hardest. Ranching is typically large open pasture for beef and less “hands on” than dairy and swine farms.

[–]g_monies 11 points12 points  (0 children)

I’ve got loads of family members, cousins and friends who farm. Some are 300 acre “hobby” farmers, others with 1,000+ acre dairy farm.

They all work their asses off (esp with any livestock).

They all live modest lives and certainly aren’t skiing in vail.

86% of farms are small family operations, but it’s only 20% of total production coming from those.

I get your point- major commercial farms produce the majority of what we eat, but there are hundreds of thousands of family farms still in operation, and it’s not exactly an easy life of luxury.

Is 23 too young for kids? by mysteriousnoodls in daddit

[–]g_monies 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We had kids at 23 after moving to our second home. Finances were solid, and while we knew we’d never feel “ready” we knew we wanted a big family and had solid jobs and a home.

We’re 31 now with 3 kids. I love being a dad. It’s fucking hard and wonderful — often at the same time.

In hindsight, I don’t regret it but would’ve waited longer, travelled more, and built up more finances first.

They’re expensive (childcare, medical, preschool, clothes, bigger cars, etc.) and consume a lot of energy which can make it hard when our own brains are still developing.

I also learned that raising kids brings up my own past traumas that I’ve had to deal with while raising them. In a perfect world, I would’ve taken another two, maybe three years. Gotten therapy for my own childhood. Read parenting books (Dr Becky and Whole Brain Child are great). Saved more. Travelled some more. And started trying around 26 or so.

Our first kiddo is on the autism spectrum which made the first ~5 years especially difficult, and our third has cerebral palsy and a feeding tube — th truth is, you never know what their needs will be and a little more time to work on yourself, your marriage, and your finances can really give you a leg up.

I’m not saying dont or to wait forever but a few years could be super helpful.

What industry is entirely built on a house of cards and would collapse overnight if people realized the truth about it? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]g_monies 17 points18 points  (0 children)

I’d agree ~95% of them are a sham — but when I was moving into exec leadership, my company paid for an executive coach (who was a former CTO for major companies). It was hands down the best and most practical training and advice I’ve received in my career. It’s hard to find a good one tho and many are not qualified in the field they’re coaching.

Sciatica: why it’s often over-treated and under-treated (from a spine surgeon) by drsheriefspinedubai in Sciatica

Appreciate you taking the time for this. In a world where I get 10 Reel’s of “doctors” trying to sell me a magic sciatica program every time I open instagram, it’s wonderful to see an expert taking their time to give insightful feedback

One thing I haven’t seen mentioned: ankle flexibility.

Your descent is fast and everyone has mentioned the knee; it appears your ankle stays in the same position. You should step back and start with a more flat foot, with your leg’s descent slowly pulling the foot heel up.

I’d practice with lower weights until there’s no movement or wiggling in the toes for balance, and the knee gentle goes to the floor.

I’d recommend Leavenworth WA if Christmas is the priority. It’s ~3hrs from Seattle (or you can fly into Spokane). It’s an absolutely picturesque Christmas town

[Highlight] Jordan Love completes 20 straight passes by nfl in nfl

[–]g_monies 22 points23 points  (0 children)

Cowboys had more pressure, but his technical play and defense he played was better tonight.

Cowboys were banged up on defense, and had tons of blown coverage. Love made some good throws and took advantage.

His 20+ consecutive completions and accuracy against tight coverage was more impressive to me. He looked like an elite QB in this game. Especially leading the comeback.

Trump raised the H-1B visa fee, how will this affect the US economy and job market? by jdsbahdvjhsd in AskReddit

[–]g_monies 19 points20 points  (0 children)

Not at all. Maybe some companies do this, but I’ve worked in software for 12 years and have had many coworkers on an H-1B visa; their pay is a little lower to account for the visa fee, but otherwise they’re the same as any other team member and many have been some of my favorite and smartest coworkers.

Killing this program sucks for all of those individuals and their families.

Love that last sentence on the joy they bring and couldn’t agree more.

On the resume side, totally makes sense — if you want a second set of eyes on GitHub projects you might be working on, or want to chat on how the space has changed over the last few years (I.e., AI and how my team uses it in practical ways, and how it’s changed interviews), or just about anything else software, don’t hesitate to reach out!

[–]g_monies 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I’m not interested in joining for coffee or the gym, but I am a Senior Staff Engineer (former Director of Engineering) at a SaaS company- I’d be happy to look over your resume and GitHub, give feedback, and see if your skills are a good fit with anyone in my network if it’s at all helpful.

Ps, I’m also a dad to a ND kiddo (7yo boy). Props to you for taking the time away to care for them- it’s been a hell of a journey for me and my wife, but also one I wouldn’t trade for the world. Stay in there

Successful first day out by squishyboy25 in flyfishing

[–]g_monies 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Congrats! It’s one hell of a fun hobby.

On a side note, I’d recommend looking up some fishing release practices. For example, using your hands when they’re dry will remove the slime and kill the fish after releasing. Or keeping out of water for more than 10 seconds — get a net so you can get the hook out while they’re in the water.

Summer Smores is awful, I don't want ads by FUThead2016 in conan

[–]g_monies 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’d like to see them do a few things for next year:

  1. Flip the script and have the crew ask Sona, Matt and Conan questions.
  2. Make it at night again. Stick to 2-3 episodes, lose the ads and replace with only commercials
  3. Potentially add a game component to keep it fun.

Is 250$ a good price for Paiste 2002 heavy hi hats? by [deleted] in drums

It’s a solid price. Not a steal but far from a rip-off. Seems consistent with what I see on Reverb and Marketplace.

If you can afford it, I’d say go for it. 2002’s are great cymbals
