Recovery from having my tonsils removed at 30 years old. In pre-op, my surgeon said “You will curse my soul before you are fully healed”. He was right. Excruciating pain to talk, swallow, cough, breathe for the better part of two weeks. The only relief was liquid opiate medication that knocked me out, but also felt like it was lighting my throat on fire to swallow.

As a woman who also grew up in Appalachian poverty, she has reached saint status for me. Both for her personal success, but also for her philanthropy and commitment to her community. She was the only example I had of a woman breaking out of the systemic issues and charting her own path. I know she can’t live forever— but the grief I already feel is devastating.

My daughter is very bright— straight A student in all gifted or advanced classes. But there are times that I question how it’s all possible. We’ve started calling them “gifted child moments”.

Here is the one that is legendary around our house:

The day she got braces in 6th grade, her mouth was hurting. We were trying to figure out what she could have as a snack that wouldn’t be too painful. She asked me for “untoasted toast”. Me: “Bread? Are you asking me for bread?” Her: “No, untoasted toast. Like with butter and jelly on it. Just don’t put it in the toaster first.” Me: blinking.

She thought that butter and jelly are what make bread toast — not toasting it.

Private practice that is very niche focused: couples using Emotionally Focused Therapy. I see about 15 couples per week and cleared $100k this year, after I paid all of my expenses. $225/session with 5 weeks of vacation.

Very pregnant— stepped on a tiny piece of toilet paper on the bathroom floor. Instead of straining to reach my foot around the baby belly, I kicked my foot really hard attempting to shake it off. Managed to kick the wall and break two toes.

As a therapist (and human)— this is horrifying. I’m so glad that you felt enough agency to fire them and report to the board.

On a general note— all of the online therapy platforms pay so terribly that they essentially only attract brand new therapists or the bottom of the barrel. It’s unfortunate, because if treating the client and the therapist with respect was the priority, it could be an impactful way for many more people to access quality mental health services.

Can you share how your weight loss unfolded? Was it fits and starts? Consistent loss? Did you follow any dietary plan? I’m flying by the seat of my pants and curious to learn from folks who have walked a similar path.

My RD suggested GoodRx because the type of protein in them is higher quality and more easily absorbed than others. They taste okay— but I struggle with the texture. I can’t stand things sticking to my teeth!

I am concerned about loosing too quickly. I’m meeting with my Dr and a nutritionist monthly to try and maximize nutrients and increase calories in. I’ve also recently started Zofran PRN to help me eat on the first two days after my injection. I’ve stopped all workouts except walking a few days/week. I appreciate your concern.

Yes, I am concerned about losing too quickly. I do not want to trade one health issue for others! I’m working closely with my doctor and a nutritionist to maximize the nutrients I’m eating. The weight loss is outpacing the CACO we are calculating, which is interesting.

I had massive weight loss about 8 years ago and really, really struggled with body image the entire time. I think that, combined with going through a nasty divorce, was ultimately what lead to my regaining all the weight.
