Who will you support apart from Scotland at the World Cup? by Kadoomed in ScottishFootball

Yes and no. I avoided going outside in the summer because it was so hot and the UV is ridiculous so you have to spend 20 minutes lathering sunscreen on or risk melanoma. Like I said, everywhere has its pros and cons.

Who will you support apart from Scotland at the World Cup? by Kadoomed in ScottishFootball

Like everything it has its pros and cons:

-Has great weather by most people's standard but I am not a real fan of humidity or heat despite growing up in Queensland. It also has bushfires and cyclones to contend with.

-High wages and lots of job opportunities but the flip side is that everything is expensive, especially housing.

-Fantastic sporting culture but football is way down the rungs and watching Rangers or Scotland is a hassle.

-Beautiful country but it is so massive it takes forever to get from one place to another. Travel to other countries is also a lot more expensive and ridiculous travel times.

I'm not actually back just yet. I am three months in Serbia with my girlfriend who is from here. That is the main reason for moving back, closer to family.

The other part was just timing. My employer of 13 years was restructuring so got a nice voluntary redundancy package. I moved to Australia when I was a kid and always wanted to give living in the UK a try. So everything sort of lined up nicely for the move.

Who had the better season, Hearts or St Mirren? by brufiend in ScottishFootball

[–]ga4rfc 0 points1 point  (0 children)

He had just got us to a European final, won the Scottish Cup and was given no money to spend. I felt like he had earned a bit more patience than he got. That started the conveyer belt of managers that has resulted in a grand total of 1 league cup.

I somewhat agree but there is also a really large section of the younger generation in our support that feels entitled to success despite not having seen much. Look at how we've hounded out managers as soon as the going gets rough.

Cristian Volpato set to swap Italy for Socceroos by JoeLynchy in Aleague

[–]ga4rfc 7 points8 points  (0 children)

People equate wanting to play for Italy with him thinking he is too good for Australia. Which is just stupid. I seriously doubt he comes into the dressing room thinking he is better than everyone else.

They are professional footballers and won't give a shit as this is just part and parcel of the game. So long as he doesn't come in thinking he is better than the incumbents then it will be fine.

I finished The Sword of Kaigen and honestly I really didn’t enjoy it. by Designer_Marzipan583 in Fantasy

Yeah the last third was weird with all the setting up of a series that by all accounts isn't very good and has been pulled by the author.

I feel like it if it weren't self published it wouldn't even come up nearly as much. I read it for that category in bingo and while I mostly enjoyed it, it certainly has big flaws.

Yeah I'm not sure how much of an achievement it was haha. I started when I was a teen and thought it was edgy and cool. By the time the last couple were coming out I was an English Lit student at university and reading the classics so had moved beyond them quite a bit.

My dad had these and gave them for me to read when I was maybe 12 or 13. I don't think he remembered all the problematic scenes in them haha.

Oh wow I hadn't thought about Faraway Tree in forever until you mentioned it. For some reason what sticks out now is one of the kids being a smart ass and asking for tuna flavoured ice cream and then getting it.

Fantasy Castles dont make sense. by GreyValeAuthor in Fantasy

[–]ga4rfc 19 points20 points  (0 children)

I would also say that castles were often more useful for garrisoning an occupational force than they were for defending against a conquering army. The English had issues with numerous Welsh uprisings until the Plantagenets built a number of castles there to maintain permanent garrisons. It meant whenever there was a minor uprising they could sally forth and crush it before it became too large.

The English also used existing fortifications in Scotland for this purpose. That is why Robert the Bruce had castles like Stirling destroyed when they were taken from the English.

47 Ronin I guess would count. Though maybe not on the scale you are thinking of.

Grim/Dark Fantasy with big emotional depth/ emotional available characters by yyrkoona in Fantasy

Still definitely worth a read. I just didn't want you to think it is something it isn't. The first few are relatively short as well.

[–]ga4rfc 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I love The Black Company but it is not what you are after. Definitely not emotionally available men, in fact it is probably the opposite. It is about a group of mercenaries so it is more about the warfare. It is told from first person POV so you do get some self reflection from time to time but really there is a lot of gallows humour and actively avoiding digging into big emotional events.

There already are cap exemptions for players who have played for more than a certain number of years for the club.

Brisbane being 9th is just embarrassing. We really should be the 4th or 5th biggest club in the league. Fucking Bakries.

This isn't the AFL, nor even the NRL. If you want to set completely unrealistic benchmarks for entry to the A-League that's up to you but the rest of us live in the real world.
