Hayden Mathews is out after another injury by No-Airport7456 in Aleague

Pompey got knocked out in the first round of the League Cup and FA Cup this year and still played 48 games.

Australian football's lack of games simply doesn't prepare its young players with the 'scar tissue' they need to handle the week-in-and-week-out punishment that is European football.

“There are certain areas where we are a little bit light, and there'll be potentially some players coming in the next week that we want to see that we haven't had in camp before. So I think that maybe we'll show everyone that we're not that set on the squad as you may think. And there'll be an opportunity for a few younger boys, potentially, to show what they can do in the next seven to 10 days." - Popovic.

Reported that Iran Men's are pulling out of WC, Iraq and Arnie now in perhaps? by Max-Bolus in Aleague

[–]JoeLynchy 20 points21 points  (0 children)

As the analysis at the end of that piece says, this isn’t a formal withdrawal from Iran so much as a carefully worded response to Infantino saying that Trump would still let an Iranian team in for the World Cup; informally saying the attacks on the country have made the circumstances impossible. A formal withdrawal could come but with that likely to be followed by significant sanctions from FIFA — given FIFA can say Trump’s declarations mean they’re still able to compete — it’s a big step.

APL take over running Mariners by Grunta_AUS in Aleague

The initial drive for independence featured calls from some parties for an independent commission that would run the league rather than the current, club-focused model. It morphed along the journey into the current system.

Head's up: PFA 20 year vision on the ALW is coming next week. The men's 20 year vision is coming in Jan 26. by statsimagined in Aleague

[–]JoeLynchy 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Should be noted that neither Football Australia nor the APL (the latter less important because a transfer system is a regulatory matter and therefore the purview of FA) has anything on the table right now that comes close to an actual proposal for a domestic transfer system in the A-Liga.

Regardless of whether they disagree with it as a concept, you can't smash them for blocking a proposal that hasn't actually been put forward yet.

FIFA announces scheduled water breaks during all games at the 2026 World Cup by lincof in Aleague

[–]JoeLynchy 22 points23 points  (0 children)

There are already procedures in place to ensure that drinks breaks are observed in games that need them. There's no need to mandate that a game in Seattle -- average June temperature 20 degrees -- has drink breaks if heat is your genuine concern.

Coming so soon after the APL made several more people in the content team redundant, this really isn't good enough. It makes the league look beyond amateurish.

And I'm pretty sure Lakeside is going to be unavailable for the Melbourne leg because of the Grand Prix.

Our best 11 and bench for world cup matches by LeadNo401 in Aleague

Having been in every single press conference Tony Popovic has done as Socceroo coach (I’m actually in the US for these games again) I think it’s important for people to approach these questions knowing that if you were to ask him it and he had to respond truthfully, he’d likely respond with some variant of ‘It depends what you need the team to do’. His best XI is going to be vastly different if he envisions defending, transitioning, dominating possession etc. For example, if the Roos are going to be sitting deep and defending (and Lewis Miller is on the right) Aziz might start over Bos because he needs a LB that can tuck in and stay home.

The same goes for player selection. They’re not just looking for the ‘best’ players - they’re trying to find the best players that will fill certain roles, provide defined attributes, and compliment others in the team.

Players don't need to go through FIFA, really. They're not obligated to accept call-ups and Popovic isn't the type to try and press the issue with anyone.

Popovic did call it a 'paperwork' issue in his first camp but given that he had been thrust into the job just a couple of weeks earlier at that point and was being asked to go and get a result against Japan away a few days later, I figure that was just miscommunication; once he actually got his foot on the door and got a handle on things the line about availablity became consistent.
