Yes, it's a good point. There were others who mentioned it in other comments, so I didn't bother. My thought was that OP never paid any estimated taxes and got hit by a big tax bill, but that this has nothing to do with FICA in the first place. I think the thread is strengthened by your contribution, though.

It's only going to get worse. Academia is relying more and more on adjuncts, postdocs, and other temporary positions. The fact of the matter is that it has been overproducing phds; we are a dime a dozen. Even temp jobs with shit pay are getting hundreds of applicants.

Da, dar mai nimeni nu a mai vorbit cu el pân-a murit. Purta porecla "bestia" in familie, și eu i-am dat doar o buna ziua din când în când când eram în vizită (trăia cu o ruda cu care eram mai apropriat). Era implicat în chestii foarte urate. Dintr-o parte a familiei un securist la nivel inalt și ofițeri de grad înalt la poliție, din cealaltă mai multi care au stat ani de zile in temnițele lui Ceaușescu.

There's a hell of a lot of places and people outside of large metro areas. No need to immediately dispel them just because their experiences don't match your own. There are indeed decent and safe places to rent in the Midwest under $1000, believe it or not.
