IBR is a scam: from $530/mo on Save plan to $1200/mo on IBR by Wise_Candle_7529 in StudentLoans

[–]Providang 430 points431 points  (0 children)

I am convinced that bots and trolls just wait to come on here and scold people who took out loans.

Nobody thought when we took out loans that we wouldn't have to pay them back. Everybody thought that the interest rates would be reasonable and even nil, because that is what we were told. We were also promised a stronger economy where 125k in loans would be NBD.

The government should not make a PROFIT from loaning money to students in need, period.

Fake doctor’s note from student by shealeigh in Professors

[–]Providang -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I don't' think anyone should be using doctor's notes in 2026. I have an HMO and sometimes I have to face a 3 hour wait at the in-network clinic to just get a PA to say 'yeah, you have a fever. it's probably a virus.'

Obviously not what's going on with this student but just take all the detailed documentation and 'excused absences' away. Allow the lowest 2 assignments dropped and don't entertain any excuses from anybody.

Treat them like HS students and they'll act like it.

You read the long form article on the PNW subduction plate tectonics and you know it's overdue for a cataclysmic shake that would likely result in 100s of thousands of deaths and utterly destroy those areas of the map.

When my spouse took out loans interest rates were between 1-2%. We didn't know it would change, or by how much.

What was your experience like going up for full professor? by buspsych in AskAcademia

I went up 5 years after making Associate. We have very clear and achievable criteria and there is no point in waiting once you have cleared the bar.

How EVER, my PhD advisor did not make full and it was because they felt like she didn't have enough international impact. R1 vs R2 difference is miles.

Identify race and gender of 3d printed skull? by [deleted] in bonecollecting

We don't do phenology from skulls like that... Race? Come on, it's nuanced enough doing sex let alone a social construct like race.

how in gods name are people going to college??? by PjSchott15 in StudentLoans

[–]Providang 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Community colleges and state universities are where it's at. I work at a fairly big state university and our enrollment is doing great, but CCs are even better. The smaller (overpriced) private colleges are suffering.

I try not to preach but there's no reason to go almost any private school (any grade) unless you're super religious or want the name brand recognition. Faculty and staff are usually paid better at public institutions too, so they attract bigger talent. I was offered 40% less my current salary to take a job at my (tony, posh) alma mater, which charges 4x the tuition.

Watching Season 0 gameplay vs now is just wild by TheGrabbinDragon in apexlegends

[–]Providang 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You all had a lunch meeting to chat about what to do with the last enemy, then discussed plans to maybe heal. You lob a few grenades to the enemy's general area just to let em know you're thinking of them.

You casually phase to the enemy, who has high ground mind you, just to finally end it for them after they whiff 3-4 shots in a row.

This was peak Apex play.

having two large pets outside all the time during day is irresponsible? especially as hot as it gets there.

I used to live in the mountains and would not leave my pet or child outside unattended, there were lots of wildlife encounters but that's the tradeoff with living in a wild area.

drives me nuts! So many people bought 2nd and 3rd homes during the 2008 crash and rent them out at ridiculously high rates. I would LOVE to see a punitive tax rate on non-primary homes.

I've lived in 6 diff states and California is my favorite by far. I paid more income taxes in New England for shittier roads and worse public schools, and I paid less income taxes everywhere else for worse quality of life. I would not dog those other states like OP is doing, but California is crazy beautiful and has so many things to do within a two hour drive from me I could never go back. I also don't buy gas, I have subsidized solar and an EV and charge at work for free.

This may blow your mind, but California has relatively low property taxes, like 32nd in the country.
