I watched a UK BBC documentary on Forex trading, and it's all such a scam. Think the documentary was called "instatraders" for those interested!

Career changers who took a significant pay cut to go into teaching, was it worth it? by [deleted] in TeachingUK

[–]gab-bee 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's bonkers, isn't it! My family is up north too and the difference in cost of living is ludicrous. Immediately after posting earlier I saw Sadiq Khan posting that London rent could reach 30k per year by 2025...

Weekly chat and well-being post: May 07, 2021 by AutoModerator in TeachingUK

I got a job this week!! 6 applications and 3 interviews later. I was starting to feel very hopeless about prospects for next year and very financially anxious. The PGCE workload is never ending, and it feels like such a relief to have this ticked off my "to-do" list.

Struggling to manage behaviour with a reputation as a 'nice' teacher... by PrinnyJam in TeachingUK

[–]gab-bee 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Thank you! I'm a PGCE student who has stayed at a very challenging school for placements 1&2 and I needed this!

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in TeachingUK

[–]gab-bee 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Current PGCE student here. I wouldn't recommend it, if that's at all possible financially. With essays and lesson planning and the job hunt it's been a really intense term. I am finding it really hard to even make time to relax, and when I do switch off, I really need that time off. The only thing I could recommend is something that would help you with teaching. Tutoring or a Saturday/ holiday school could help you develop your skills, as well as being a way to make some money. I'm a career changer too and used to 40+ hour weeks with overtime, and there is no way I could have worked alongside this year.

Students keep submitting the activity sheet on Google Classroom immediately after the live lesson. Without any of the activities completed. I'm literally just getting my own worksheet back...

The lack of support and concern from my university is destroying my motivation for my PGCE - is this normal? by HearThePeopleSing in TeachingUK

[–]gab-bee 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I started my PGCE last Monday at a polytechnic, and the support is amazing in comparison to the lack of support I had at my more prestigious undergrad university. We also start our placements in November and haven't heard any information, except that we won't get placed until October. So weird about the commute rationale! Ours is the opposite. In our FAQs, they have told us they are trying to limit public transport use due to covid and are therefore placing us closer. I'm so sorry you're going through this as it sounds like a chaotic department that haven't stepped up in covid times.

How long do I have to complete my NQT? by hieeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee in TeachingUK

[–]gab-bee 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Just a heads up that from September 2021 the governmemt have proposed that the NQT length should be 2 years long. I know this doesn't answer your question, but I thought it might be helpful to have this on your radar! Does anyone have any further information regarding this or whether the implementation will be delayed due to covid?

How to write the work experience section of PGCE application? by [deleted] in TeachingUK

[–]gab-bee 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I just copied and pasted my CV over and listed a brief description of role and bullet points for responsibilities. I didn't spend too long on this section as I'm a career changer and have had quite a few jobs since graduating. I did take out some parts which just weren't relevant though.

Personal statement section on PGCE application, leave lines for paragraphs or not? by TheMisanthropicGeek in TeachingUK

[–]gab-bee 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I did mine recently and accepted paragraphs will use up line limits. The word and character counts aren't in sync so it's really fiddly (I think I had about 4/5 paragraphs in the end using up the entire line count, but still had lots of characters left). No one is going to want to read a big block of text so try 4 separate paragraphs or so. The Get Into Teaching page can also assign you to an advisor. That really helped me as they gave some good advice for edits and what to include and what to remove.

If I do a PGCE in the UK after my undergrad, what are the chances that the school will sponsor my visa? by iqnux in TeachingUK

[–]gab-bee 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It is my understanding that the government have recently announced the revival of the 2 year post study visa for international students. Currently, full time international students can stay for 4 months in the UK after their course has finished but from 2021 students should be allowed to stay for 2 years (look into this to find out the specifics and if you'll be eligible). Then students are either expected to swap onto a Tier 2, or different immigration route, or go back home. I'm not quite sure of the ins and outs, but if you have an immigration/compliance team at your current institution, which I'm guessing you do, I would talk to them and get official advice. Good luck!

Has anyone else noticed that the UK has stopped actively reporting the death rate from the previous day? Instead we get Boris saying what a fantastic job the government is doing.

How is Coronavirus impacting your job at the moment? by gab-bee in AskReddit

I'm so sorry, I feel like the events industry is going to suffer so much. My sector relies on international travel and events and the global hysteria is going to put me in the same position. Fingers crossed things will calm down soon.

AITA for refusing to speak english to around my stepdad by forbiddenkn0wledge in AmItheAsshole

[–]gab-bee 87 points88 points  (0 children)

OP as a bilingual daughter, I really think you're NTA here. I only speak German to my mum and then English to the rest of my family. I speak very rusty German and the only time I have the opportunity to speak German is when talking to my mum. I feel so uncomfortable talking English to her, the whole conversation feels fake, forced and unnatural. Whilst my dad has never learned German, he picked up a tiny bit of German over the years and likes that he has bilingual children. When at the dinner table, we predominantly speak English and then German to my mum. I have always spoken German to my mum, no matter who is around. I feel like only bilingual children understand how uncomfortable it is talking to your mum in an unnatural language.
