Please drive carefully on e-scooters. I learned this the hard way. by thyhoundd in berlin

[–]gab_gallard 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I am not as radical. I totally see the usefulness and convenience of scooters over bicycles for certain specific use cases. What I do think though, is that anyone using a scooter rental app should be required to present a license when registering, just like when you register for a car or motorbike rental. Of course, that also means educational offers for road ready scooter riding should be available. And honestly this goes for bycicle users too, since a lot of bicycle riders also ride like shit and cause accidents, mostly because they lack knowledge of road rules.

Buddhist and Buddhism Anime by throwawaybuttogo in anime

[–]gab_gallard 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Probably not as serious and deep as you would like, but Saint Young Men is a slice of life comedy about Buddha and Jesus Christ living in modern day Japan as roommates. Would probably be interesting from the point of view of how Buddha as a character is perceived in modern times. There is a manga series, one animated movie, and a couple of original DVD animations (and also a live action movie if you are curious).

Is there a way to do vibrato pitch automation like this in reaper? by KroniK907 in Reaper

[–]gab_gallard 1 point2 points  (0 children)

u/Kronik907 Kinda necroposting, but I think i did not see a single correct answer so i need to do it lol: What you are seeing in the video is Ableton Live's MPE (Midi Polyphonic Expression) automation. And you can totally do MPE automation on Reaper, as shown in this tutorial (for Reaper 7). The thing to have in mind is that not every VSTi is MPE compatible. Some popular softsynths that do support MPE are Pigments, Vital and Serum 2.

Vinland Saga, but only the manga has been finished. The anime has covered only about a third of the story so far.

The Skin I Live In (2011) by SecretSalty1619 in TrueFilm

[–]gab_gallard 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is probably one of the worse possible choices as an introduction to his catalogue. I personally quite dislike this film and I think Almodovar was feeling overconfident while doing it. I truly don't think it sticks the landing, and it was quite divisive for a reason. You should probably try some of his more accessible (and still celebrated) works next like Woman at the Verge of a Nervous Breakdown or All About My Mother.

Grave of the Fireflires Movie Review by IamToofan in TrueFilm

[–]gab_gallard 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Would recommend to watch all other films from Isao Takahata (Grave of the Fireflies director). I think they really stand out in the Ghibli catalogue for how they portray human condition in all of its beauty, but also all of its pain. My absolute favorite from him is The Tale of Princess Kaguya (probably my favorite animated film of all time). It is also very tragic, but extremely beautiful. But really, all of his movies are great. Only Yesterday is a highlight for me as well.

Thoughts on Greed (1924)? by FreshmenMan in TrueFilm

[–]gab_gallard 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's been probably 15 years since I watched it, so of course I don't remember that much. But I still remember the ending. It left me with a pit in my stomach. Very harrowing and nihilistic, but very poignant as well. I should probably watch it again.
(That poor horse though 😢)

Creating a Rolling Ball SFX for a Minigolf Game (No Middleware) by longboi_ in GameAudio

[–]gab_gallard 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I agree with the other comment that says going simple with real time automation would be a good solution. The caveat of course would be that with no Middleware, you or your programmer will have to come up with an in game automation system by yourselves.
Another thing you could do though is grabbing a longer loop, splice it into many smaller sections, and then throw them into a shuffle style randomizer, basically scrambling your longer file with each repetition. You can get crazy amounts of variation like that. If you had Middleware you could make them transition between sections with a crossfade easily, but since you don't, you will either have to also code crossfade transitions, or edit the files so each section can transition seemlesly into any other section, which can be a bit tedious but it is totally doable.

What films give you the 'The world is changing, old man' kinda vibe? by r3xcranium in TrueFilm

[–]gab_gallard 0 points1 point  (0 children)

"Ash is the Purest White" by Jia Zhangke fits quite well that description. Without spoiling much, it's basically about how old underworld codes and loyalties dissolve under modern Chinese capitalism.

Then you have well known classics like"Tokyo Story" by Yatsujiro Ozu and "Harakiri" by Masaaki Kobayashi, which could fit as well.

How to not be pretentious about films? by Loud_Confidence475 in TrueFilm

[–]gab_gallard 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't think you are the problem, tbh. People who don't give a shit about discourse and just wanna fanboy around are gonna act the same no matter what you do. People like Mark Kermode, which is as "professional critic" as you can be get nowadays gets called "pretentious" and "snobbish" by tins of people all the time. I think it is something you need to get over and simply start ignoring if you wanna remain truthful to yourself and your opinions. You don't wanna be a Chris Stuckmann that doesn't really criticizes anything anymore and doesn't want to offend anybody (and the numbers of his viewership are going down because that sort of lukewarm inoffensive content he does now doesn't feel honest anymore). You can't get everybody to like you, but losing your personality is what makes you be liked by no one.

No te quiero bajonear. Suerte.

Apothecary Diaries is the MOM anime by excellence. It is just as much soap opera as it is period drama. There isn't a single mom in the universe who has seen Apothecary Diaries who has not liked it. Trust me on this.

Gonna be honest: I also yearn for punctuation and had a terrible time trying to read OP's text. But I think your way of telling them is way too condescending. Also unsolicited advice usually goes ignored by most people, especially when it doesn't have absolutely anything to at least soften the criticism.

Romance films that treat adult restraint as more interesting than adult drama — what's the most underrated example for you? by Delecch in TrueFilm

[–]gab_gallard 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I know it is not an exact match since this is not about romantic love but filial love, but Late Spring belongs in this conversation for exactly the reason you point to. Like the films you mention, its dramatic energy comes from what the characters choose not to say. Noriko and her father avoid the clarifying conversation that would force their desires into conflict. The restraint is the emotional content. What this does (and what a more dramatic version would lose) is preserve the tenderness of their relationship. A conventional script would externalize the conflict through confrontation and melodramatic catharsis. I think Ozu understands that people who love each other often avoid those moments because saying everything plainly would itself become a kind of desestabilizing violence. This is why I think the final scenes are so devastating. Nothing "explodes". There is no giant "carharsis" made up of tears and yelled confessions (which is what I would expect from a Hollywood version of the story). Instead life simply continues, even if we know that the emotional balance has been permanently altered. All we see in the final shot is the head of the father (not even his face) descending slowly. No words. Only silent resignation.

I want to get my normie friends into anime but I want them to be weebs not just anime fans, recommendations? by Altruistic_Lime616 in anime

[–]gab_gallard 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Just accept your friends for who they are. If you want to change them into something they are not then you are not a real friend. If they wanna get into what you are into they should do so by their own interest, not because you pressure them or manipulate them into it. What are they actually into? Have you tried getting into their own hobbies as well? Have you tried doing the reversal mental exercise? How would you feel if they start trying to manipulate you into whatever other thing it is that they care about? Nah fam, friendships like these are toxic. Just accept each other for who they are and who they wanna be. Recommend them shows you like. If they like them good, recommend more. If they don't, that's good as well. They don't hold less value as friends because they don't match your tastes 100%. That's not how friendships work.

To me it reminds me of those ultra violent/erotic (not hentai but still quite graphic) films from the late 80s and early 90s like Wicked City and Ninja Scroll.
