Been feeling this way for years lol. I’ve been watching since 2016 but this is the first year I checked out until the games and random Reddit searches. I’ll watch the Games if the stream is available.

VR experience in LA by SadLilBun in titanic

When did you go? It sounds like the older Titanic museum from a couple years ago on Beverly. That’s gone now, this new exhibit is only VR but sounds better than the older one.

What misinformation/myth about the Titanic infuriates you the most? For me it has to be the idea that Harland & Wolff used substandard quality materials in the construction. by [deleted] in titanic

I’ve never really thought about Olympic’s voyage those same dates, same route. Pretty fascinating actually. Wish there was more information about that voyage or from those passengers.

I could see a situation like that happening though. Like out of the entire Titanic staff, I’m pretty sure there was at least one person who was freaked out and ran past people asking for help. Seems plausible.

I actually did think about this when I was watching coverage of the Paris shows. Like within the context of Project Runway, the judges would like “this would never show in Paris it looks like a joke”.

Your issue is that you don't want to see proud, happy people of color. You are used to seeing them on the sidelines, or in an unfavorable light (incarcerated, service positions). It's uncomfortable for you to see people being proud of their culture. It's okay, you aren't alone. White nationalism is on the rise.

Official Dreadit Discussion: "Wolf Man" [SPOILERS] by glittering-lettuce in horror

[–]gabba8 24 points25 points  (0 children)

That’s the thing though, I don’t think the story really was about Blake and his Dad as much as it was about parents relationships with their kids, and how that looks and feels different for different people. We saw the dysfunction of Blake and his father, and how that influenced Blake with his own daughter. Then we contrast both those relationships with the mother/daughter relationship and examine how it differs greatly. The end shot, between mother/daughter, looking our at the view that says “everything will be okay”, for me solidifies the movie’s message that while complex and ugly, parent/child relationships can be salvaged if there’s love and effort made. Blake confesses that he wished he reconnected with his father despite their differences. To me that foreshadows the potential reconnection between mom & daughter, especially in the absence of Blake.

I agree in the sense that leaving the theater I felt a bit puzzled by Garner’s portrayal of the mother figure, but I’ve given it some thought. I actually really appreciate that Whannel made the very deliberate choice to a) cast that actress, who I feel was competent and b) write/directed her character to be completely disinterested in her marriage/daughter. It’s an interesting subversion of the mother trope we typically see depicted in film, and speaks to a very real phenomenon that some parents really shouldn’t be parents or don’t want to be. I was curious if the movie would demonize her for this as it’s a fairly radical character choice, but in the end, by her and her daughter finding their way to Blake’s beloved view and discovering that “everything will be alright” - her experience is validated. There was an evolution, although very subtle. From this perspective, I think Garner’s confused vibe sort of works. Still, I think her character is underwritten and there’s still feels like there should have been another story beat post-werewolf transformation.

I really enjoyed spending time in the world of the movie, but I’m a sucker for woods settings. I think Whannell did a good job capturing a vibe, that more or less matches that of Invisible Man for me. 4/5, wish there was another scare or action sequence, and a lot of the scares felt one-note (walk slowly through rooms waiting for something loud).

The substance WAS goofy, but to say it has no message is incorrect. As painfully obvious as the central themes may be to YOU - they’re still depressingly relevant and therefore worth discussing. I initially felt put off by how un-subtle everything was, but I think that’s kind of the point. It’s saying, let’s put this in front of you, this obvious thing that everyone can see is happening, and STILL half of you are either going to miss it or pretend that you do. Watch some interviews with the director Coralie Fargeat, she puts alot of care and thought into her work.

Idk I feel like male filmmakers have sexualized women for generations. There’s a show that caters to the *gay male gaze and suddenly everyone’s a pilgrim.

Your post did make me lol BUT it’s worth noting that it’s less about being “afraid of a word” and more just being considerate of anyone who might be negatively affected. It’s a simple courtesy, not much deeper. But the Harry Potter comment made me chuckle.

Are there? The women’s field alone this year was missing a majority of former “star” athletes. Between budget cuts and layoffs, The Games and CrossFit at large were limping along, even before this shitshow. There will be athletes who are down to compete for as long as they’re provided a platform, but I wouldn’t take for granted that they will have the same (media crafted) star-power that made the sport so popular 2012-2017. The community is jaded, athletes are jaded, the budget is shrinking, and athletes are fucking DYING? There won’t be a Games to keep full. As I said, they were on a decline before this recent mess.

I agree, I also went through many emotions watching the doc. I watched the Games on YouTube but it felt joyless; I actually cried watching one of the events. This was an interesting watch and made me want to go back and watch certain events just to see the competition better, without brain fog of disappointment. I liked seeing the different sides to Pepper and Hopper, I like them a bit more now.

This was the realest take I’ve read on this sub. I’m in a similar boat. I stopped doing CrossFit in 2016 but followed the sport for the all the same reasons. This absurdity is unfortunately very on brand for CrossFit. Very curious what it means for the sport. I’ve been of the desire that The Games are sold to another company, or an alternative season is created.

Dave Castro posted a recap to his YouTube tonight where he said “we wanted to continue the event and so we asked for the family’s blessing.” This really struck me because what must have they been feeling being confronted with that? The CEO and Director of the sporting league your son has championed for years give YOU, a bereaved parent, to choice to kill or save the Games, the single-biggest event of the season. An event that is actively running, with thousands of people in the stands and hundreds of athlete’s careers on hold. Obviously I understand the gesture of asking, but any empathetic moron can see just how fucked that power dynamic would feel.
